{"id":17238,"date":"2023-09-16T21:40:16","date_gmt":"2023-09-16T16:10:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/?p=17238"},"modified":"2023-09-16T21:40:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-16T16:10:20","slug":"oiml-certificate-16-09-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-09-2023\/oiml-certificate-16-09-2023","title":{"rendered":"OIML Certificate"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS-3\/Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In News<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India has become the<strong> 13th<\/strong> internationally accepted authority for issuing <strong>International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML) certificates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is Legal Metrology?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Legal Metrology is the <strong>application of legal requirements<\/strong> to measurements and measuring instruments.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The objective of Legal Metrology is to <strong>ensure public guarantee<\/strong> from the point of view of security and accuracy of the weighments and measurements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The specifications for weighing and measuring instruments have been prescribed in the<strong> Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the OIML certificate?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An OIML certificate is issued <strong>for selling weights &amp; measures<\/strong> anywhere in the world.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To sell a weight or measure in the International market an OIML Pattern Approval certificate <strong>is mandatory,<\/strong> which will be issued by <strong>the Department of Consumer Affairs.&nbsp;<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>India follows OIML recommendations and procedures of testing and calibration of weights and measures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The domestic manufacturers of weighing and measuring equipment, like BP meters, oximeters and cloth scales, can now get the<strong> instruments tested in India itself before selling them in the international market.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">What is the International Organisation of Legal Metrology (OIML)?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is an <strong>intergovernmental treaty organization<\/strong>, established in <strong>1955<\/strong> in order to promote the global harmonization of legal metrology procedures that underpin and facilitate international trade.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It plays a <strong>crucial role in harmonising national laws and regulations on performance<\/strong> of measuring instruments like clinical thermometers, alcohol breath analysers, radar speed measuring instruments, ship tanks found at ports, and petrol dispensing units.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>India became a member of the OIML in 1956.<\/strong> In the same year, India signed the metric convention with the standards of <strong>Weights and Measures Act.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other Countries that can issue this certificate are <strong>Australia, Switzerland, China, Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, France, United Kingdom, Japan, Netherlands, Sweden, and Slovakia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-economics\/india-can-issue-oiml-certificates-significance-8940149\/lite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>IE<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Syllabus: GS-3\/Economy In News What is Legal Metrology?
