{"id":17142,"date":"2023-09-14T17:50:40","date_gmt":"2023-09-14T12:20:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/?p=17142"},"modified":"2023-09-14T17:50:43","modified_gmt":"2023-09-14T12:20:43","slug":"russias-support-to-north-koreas-satellite-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/14-09-2023\/russias-support-to-north-koreas-satellite-plan","title":{"rendered":"Russia\u2019s Support to North Korea\u2019s Satellite Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Syllabus: GS3\/ India &amp; Foreign Relations, Effect of Policies &amp; Politics of Developed &amp; Developing Countries on India\u2019s Interests<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In News<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Russia &amp; North Korea\u2019s leaders met recently for the summit at the <strong>Vostochny Cosmodrome space station <\/strong>in <strong>Russia\u2019s Far East.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">About the meeting highlights<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>As stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Russia would help North Korea<strong> launch satellites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>North Korean leader Kim Jong-un said that Russia had his full backing in its <strong>\u201csacred fight\u201d with the West<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The leaders would <strong>discuss issues <\/strong>about getting supplies from North Korea to replenish Moscow\u2019s dwindling stock of weapons and ammunition.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Issues &amp; challenges: <\/strong>U.S. and South Korean officials have expressed concern that<strong> North Korean leader could provide weapons and ammunition to Russia<\/strong>, which has expended vast stocks in more than 18 months of war in Ukraine.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moscow and Pyongyang have <strong>denied such intentions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Significance\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location of meet: <\/strong>The decision to meet at Vostochny Cosmodrome, a major satellite launch facility, may communicate what Kim Jong-un sees as the crucial next steps in his efforts<strong> to build a viable nuclear arsenal<\/strong> that could threaten the United States and its allies in Asia.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Violation of UN resolutions: <\/strong>If Russia does buy weapons from North Korea, it would be in violation of UN resolutions that ban all arms trade with the isolated country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ending isolation: <\/strong>North Korea\u2019s economy has been crippled by the pandemic-era border closures and Kim may ask for supplies of food and energy to address shortfalls.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The meeting is a move on Kim\u2019s part to deepen relations with Moscow and end his country\u2019s years of isolation.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>North Korea\u2019s failures in launching military spy satellite: <\/strong>Kim\u2019s visit to Russia came after North Korea experienced repeated failures in recent months to put its first military spy satellite into orbit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased threats of DPRK missiles: <\/strong>Kim has punctuated his testing activity with an<strong> escalatory nuclear doctrine <\/strong>that authorises his military to conduct preemptive nuclear attacks against enemies if it perceives Pyongyang\u2019s leadership as under threat.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The UN Security Council<\/strong> imposed economic sanctions on North Korea over its previous satellite launches, seeing them as covers for long-range ballistic missile tests.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Space-based reconnaissance capabilities would potentially enhance the threat posed by Kim\u2019s missiles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>About the Far East<\/strong><\/span><br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><br><\/span>&#8211; It is the<strong> easternmost part of Russia<\/strong>.\u00a0<br>&#8211; It borders two oceans, the Pacific and the Arctic, and five countries (China, Japan, Mongolia, the United States and the <strong>DPRK<\/strong>).<br>1. DPRK is short for the <strong>Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea<\/strong>, North Korea\u2019s formal name.<br>&#8211; The Far Eastern Federal District covers more than a third of the country\u2019s territory.<br>&#8211; It is rich in natural resources like diamonds, stannary, borax materials, 50 gold, tungsten, and fish and seafood.\u00a0<br>&#8211; About 1\/3 of all coal reserves and hydro-engineering resources of the country are here.\u00a0<br>&#8211; Forests of the region comprise about 30% of the total forest area of Russia.<br><br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>India &amp; Far East<\/strong><br><\/span><strong>&#8211; In 2019<\/strong> India announced a commitment to an <strong>\u201cAct Far-East\u201d policy<\/strong>.\u00a0This policy is an important part of a <strong>special and privileged strategic partnership with Russia<\/strong>.<br>&#8211; India has also made significant investments in the Russian far east in the fields of <strong>pharmaceuticals <\/strong>and <strong>diamonds<\/strong>.<br>&#8211; India can also have cooperation in the <strong>mobility of talent<\/strong>. Indian talent has contributed to the development of <strong>many resource-rich regions of the world<\/strong>.\u00a0<br>1.
