Disparities are evident among States.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong><u>About the State Hunger Index (SHI)<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Index style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong><u>Performance of states in India<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Alarming: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">In the SHI, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh scored 35, which places them in the \u2018alarming\u2019 category.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>States above the national average:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Maharashtra, and West Bengal all scored above the national average (29).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">The performance of these States resembles that of African nations such as Haiti, Niger, Liberia, and Sierra Leone.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Moderate hunger:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> On the other hand, Chandigarh scored 12, and Sikkim, Puducherry, and Kerala all scored below 16. These States, along with Manipur, Mizoram, Punjab, Delhi, Arunachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Tamil Nadu, fall under the \u2018moderate hunger\u2019 category.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Serious hunger:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> All the other States, which scored below the national average and above 20, have a problem of \u2018serious hunger\u2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Low hunger: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">No State falls under the \u2018low hunger\u2019 category.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>The impact of COVID-19 on the SHI<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"> is <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>not captured <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">here since post-pandemic estimates are not yet available.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong><u>Issues &#038; challenges<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Dispute over data &#038; methodology: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Over the last half a decade, India\u2019s GHI score has deteriorated primarily due to the increasing prevalence of calorie undernourishment.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">According to the<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong> Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">, the proportion of calorie undernourishment in India has been escalating since 2017, reaching 16.3% in 2020, equivalent to the 2009 statistic.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">The Indian government has disputed these conclusions by raising concerns about the data and methodology used in calculating the GHI.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:circle\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">However, it has not been able to provide empirical evidence to support its claims.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Lack of National Sample Survey (NSS) data: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">No National Sample Survey (NSS) round on nutritional intake has been conducted by the government since 2011-12, which used to offer insights into the prevalence of calorie undernourishment at national and subnational levels.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Climate change &#038; food insecurity: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">Climate change and the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, from heat waves to flash floods, pose a big challenge not only to India\u2019s food system but also to poverty alleviation \u2013 gains could reverse with these shocks.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"list-style-type:disc\"><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>Non-communicable diseases: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">The rising burden of <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>cardiovascular <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\">and other <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size:13pt\"><span style=\"font-family:Georgia,serif\"><span style=\"color:#000000\"><span style=\"background-color:#ffffff\"><strong>non-communicable
