India and the U.S. have also concluded a roadmap for \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Defence Industrial Cooperation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019 to guide the policy direction for the next few years.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

About the Miyawaki plantation method<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

It is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Japanese <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>method of creating dense urban forests in a small area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
It is named after <\/span><\/span><\/span>Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and it was developed in the 1970s, with the basic objective to <\/span><\/span><\/span>densify green cover<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> within a small parcel of land.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
It is an ecological engineering work where <\/span><\/span><\/span>native plants\/ trees<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> are planted in a scientific method to create an arrangement of fast-growing, dense, varied species of plants, 20 times faster than normal.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

In transplanting, farmers prepare nurseries where the paddy seeds are first sown and raised into young plants. These seedlings are then uprooted and replanted 25-35 days later in the main field. The nursery seed bed is 5-10% of the area to be transplanted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
In DSR, there is no nursery preparation or transplantation. The seeds are instead directly drilled into the field by a tractor-powered machine.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
\u00a0DSR saves groundwater, as opposed to the traditional water-intensive method, under which rice seedlings are transplanted from a nursery to waterlogged fields.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

A<\/span><\/span><\/span>ccording to a new study<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> humans have caused marked tilts in the Earth\u2019s axis by pumping water out of the ground and moving it elsewhere.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Groundwater pumping has tilted the planet nearly 80 centimetres east between 1993 and 2010 alone.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The water circulated across the planet determines how mass is distributed. Scientists had predicted that between 1993 and 2010, people pumped 2,150 gigatons of groundwater, or more than 6 millimetres (0.24 inches) of sea level increase.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The planet\u2019s geographic north and south poles are where its axis intersects the surface; however, they are not fixed. The axis and hence the poles fluctuate due to variations in the Earth\u2019s mass distribution.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
In the past, the poles\u2019 drift was only caused by natural forces like ocean currents and the convection of heated rock deep beneath the Earth. But the new research pitched the redistribution of groundwater as the primary culprit for the drift.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
In the new study, researchers analysed changes first by accounting for just ice sheets and glaciers and then by adding different groundwater redistribution scenarios.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
A 2021 study <\/span><\/span><\/span>published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> found that the direction of polar drift moved from southward to eastward in 1995 and that the average drift speed from 1995-2020 was 17 times quicker than from 1981-1995.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
In the past 50 years, humans have extracted 18 trillion tonnes of water from aquifers without replacing it, it added.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

The Earth\u2019s axis of rotation is the line along which it spins around itself as it revolves around the Sun. The points on which the axis intersects the planet\u2019s surface are the geographical north and south poles.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The location of the poles is not fixed, however, as the axis moves due to changes in how the Earth\u2019s mass is distributed around the planet. Thus, the poles move when the axis moves, and the movement is called \u201cpolar motion\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

The term <\/span><\/span><\/span>chromosome<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> comes from the Greek words for <\/span><\/span><\/span>color (chroma)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>body (soma).\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Chromosomes are <\/span><\/span><\/span>thread-like structures located inside the nucleus<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of animal and plant cells. Each chromosome is made of <\/span><\/span><\/span>protein<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and a single molecule of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) passed from parents to offspring.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The unique structure of chromosomes keeps DNA tightly wrapped around spool-like proteins, called <\/span><\/span><\/span>histones.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Without such packaging, DNA molecules would be too long to fit inside cells.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Humans, along with other animals and plants, have <\/span><\/span><\/span>linear chromosomes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that are <\/span><\/span><\/span>arranged in pairs within the nucleus of the cell.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Humans have <\/span><\/span><\/span>22 pairs<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of numbered chromosomes (<\/span><\/span><\/span>autosomes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>) and one pair of sex chromosomes (XX or XY), for a <\/span><\/span><\/span>total of 46.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Each pair contains two chromosomes,<\/span><\/span><\/span> one coming from each parent, <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>which means that children inherit half of their chromosomes from their mother and half from their father.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Biologically female individuals have <\/span><\/span><\/span>two X chromosomes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (XX) while those who are biologically male have <\/span><\/span><\/span>one X and one Y chromosome <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(XY).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The sex chromosomes determine the sex of offspring. The father can contribute an X or a Y chromosome, while the mother always contributes an X.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Inheriting too many or not enough copies of sex chromosomes can lead to serious problems. For example, females who have extra copies of the X chromosome are usually taller than average and some have mental disability.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Males with more than one X chromosome have<\/span><\/span><\/span> Klinefelter syndrome<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which is a condition characterized by tall stature and, often, impaired fertility.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Another syndrome caused by imbalance in the number of sex chromosomes is <\/span><\/span><\/span>Turner syndrome.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Women with Turner have one X chromosome only. They are very short, usually do not undergo puberty and some may have kidney or heart problems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/div>\n

The <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018sex-determining region Y\u2019 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>on the Y chromosome determines the biological male sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Scientists published the complete genetic sequence of the Y chromosome in 2003. In total, the chromosome encoded for only 55 genes and accounted for around <\/span><\/span><\/span>2% of the genetic material inside a cell.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
The initial assumptions were that the chromosome is degenerating and shrinking over time, and possibly has little functional role but of late researchers have discovered that the Y chromosome possesses genes that are <\/span><\/span><\/span>vital to biological functions,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> including those <\/span><\/span><\/span>linked to ageing and lifespan regulation.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Difference in lifespan between sexes:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> In the <\/span><\/span><\/span>animal kingdom<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (including mammals), scientists have noticed substantial differences in lifespan between the sexes: <\/span><\/span><\/span>the females tend to live longer than the males.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> This phenomenon has been attributed largely to the absence of a second Y chromosome in males, exposing the deleterious mutations in the X chromosome.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
LoY:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> It is also well known that <\/span><\/span><\/span>men lose the Y chromosome (LoY) with age<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and that this is associated with a<\/span><\/span><\/span> higher frequency of cancers, Alzheimer\u2019s disease, and a shorter lifespan.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

This has been corroborated by studies on mice models that showed that LoY resulted in shorter lifespans and that older mice with LoY displayed significant memory deficiencies compared to younger mice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Do humans lose the Y chromosome?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Studies conducted by researchers have shown that LoY in humans occurs with age and is associated with several debilitating medical conditions resulting in weak heart muscles (cardiomyopathy), stretched or thickened heart tissue (fibrosis), and heart failure.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Researchers have also found that the pathological effects observed on account of LoY in mice\u2019s hearts <\/span><\/span><\/span>could be negated by transforming growth factor \u03b21-neutralising antibodies, <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>suggesting a <\/span><\/span><\/span>potential treatment<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> for this medical condition in future.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Researchers performed an analysis of 29 primate sex chromosomes and suggested that in the last 80 million years, there has been a <\/span><\/span><\/span>rapid evolution<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the Y chromosome.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

This is exemplified by the fact that the human Y chromosome is about one-third as big as the X chromosome. So, many animal species, including humans, have a <\/span><\/span><\/span>genuine fear of losing the Y chromosome in the distant future.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Further, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>evolutionary path <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>leading to the appearance of modern humans provides clues as to what could be in store for the Y chromosome.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
Genome sequences of the Neanderthals, an ancient relative of the modern human, harbour telltale signs of the replacement of the Y chromosome beginning from modern humans.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
