greenhouse gas scenarios, stated that Climate change will increase sea level in Lakshadweep Islands and it will affect airports and residential areas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>About<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sea-levels will rise around the Lakshadweep Islands in the range between 0.4 mm\/year to 0.9 mm\/year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The study highlights that the <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>worst possible inundation (flooding)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> scenarios projected for Lakshadweep Islands are almost similar under different emission scenarios projected and all the islands in the archipelago would be vulnerable to impact from sea-level rise.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">For the first time, climate model projections were used to assess the potential areas of inundation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Smaller islands <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Chetlat and Amini<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The present work highlights that larger islands <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Minicoy and the capital Kavaratti<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> are also vulnerable to sea-level rise, and expected to experience land-loss along 60% of the existing shoreline.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Sea-level rise effects are seen to have the least impact on <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Androth Island<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span levels have swelled over 8 inches (about 23cm) since 1880, with about three of those inches gained in the last 25 years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><a style=\"text-decoration: none;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globalchange.gov\/browse\/indicators\/global-sea-level-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Three Primary Factors For Sea Level Rise<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The change in sea levels is linked to three primary factors, all induced by ongoing global climate change:<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Thermal expansion:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When water heats up, it expands. About half of the sea-level rise over the past 25 years is attributable to warmer oceans simply occupying more space.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Melting glaciers:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Large ice formations such as mountain glaciers naturally melt a bit each summer.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In the winter, snows, primarily from evaporated sea water, are generally sufficient to balance out the melting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Recently, though, persistently higher temperatures caused by global warming have led to greater than average summer melting as well as diminished snowfall due to later winters and earlier springs.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">That creates an imbalance between runoff and ocean evaporation, causing sea levels to rise.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Loss of Greenland and Antarctica\u2019s ice sheets:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">As with mountain glaciers, increased heat is causing the massive ice sheets that cover\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Greenland and Antarctica to melt more quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Scientists also believe that meltwater from above and seawater from below is seeping beneath Greenland&#8217;s ice sheets, effectively lubricating ice streams and causing them to move more quickly into the sea.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">While melting in West Antarctica has drawn considerable focus from scientists, especially with the 2017 break in the Larsen C ice shelf, glaciers in East Antarctica are also showing signs of destabilizing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><u>Threats<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Projected inundation due to sea-level rise can impact the islanders as residential areas are quite close to the present coastline.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Airport and residential areas will be severely affected<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The only airport in the archipelago is located at the southern tip of Agatti Island, and has a high likelihood of damage due to inundation from sea-level rise.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>Devastating effect on coastal areas:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Destructive erosion<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Wetland flooding<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Aquifer and agricultural soil contamination with salt, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">lost habitat for fish, birds, and plants.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Higher sea levels are coinciding with more dangerous hurricanes and typhoons that move more slowly and drop more rain, contributing to more powerful storm surges that can strip away everything in their path.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Forced migration of people due to flooding<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The prospect of higher coastal water levels threatens basic services like internet access, since much of the underlying communications infrastructure lies in the path of rising seas.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">A higher sea level causes heavy rains and strong winds, unleashes severe storms and other <\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong>big atmospheric phenomena<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> that can be a real threat to places that might be on its way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If all the ice that currently exists on Earth in glaciers and sheets melted it would raise sea level by 216 feet.
