Recently, the Prime Minister of India has greeted the people of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Odisha<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> on the festival of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Raja Parba<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Odisha observes Raja Parba festival to <\/span><\/span><\/span>combat prejudices that surround the menstrual cycle<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and celebrates a girl\u2019s womanhood.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • A <\/span><\/span><\/span>four-day festival <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>celebrated <\/span><\/span><\/span>every year in June<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, it calls for women to come together and a<\/span><\/span><\/span>cknowledge the gift of Mother Earth<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> or <\/span><\/span><\/span>Bhudevi<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • According to religious belief, it is said that during the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first three days<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, \u2018Bhudevi\u2019, the wife of Lord Jagannath <\/span><\/span><\/span>undergoes a menstruation cycle <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and on the <\/span><\/span><\/span>fourth <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>day, she is given a <\/span><\/span><\/span>ceremonial bath<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • The festival is <\/span><\/span><\/span>natively pronounced as \u2018raw-jaw\u2019<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, while \u2018Raja\u2019 is derived from the word \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Rajaswala<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019 which means <\/span><\/span><\/span>menstruating women<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Each day of the festival has its own name and significance.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • The first day is called <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pahili Rajo<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The second day is<\/span><\/span><\/span> Mithuna Sankranti<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which signifies the beginning of the solar month of Mithuna i.e., the rainy season.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The third day is <\/span><\/span><\/span>Bhu Daaha or Basi Raja<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

CPI-based or Retail Inflation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Retail inflation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has hit a<\/span><\/span><\/span> six-month high of 6.3 per cent in May<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, due to persistent rise in fuel and edible oil prices.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Consumer Price Index<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (CPI)<\/span><\/span><\/span> monitors retail prices at a certain level<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> for a particular commodity; price movement of goods and services at rural, urban and all-India levels.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The change in the price index over a period of time is referred to as <\/span><\/span><\/span>CPI-based inflation, or retail inflation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Generally, CPI is used as a <\/span><\/span><\/span>macroeconomic indicator of inflation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, as a tool by the central bank and government for inflation targeting and for inspecting price stability, and as a deflator in the national accounts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • CPI also <\/span><\/span><\/span>helps understand the real value <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of salaries, wages and pensions, the purchasing power of the nation\u2019s currency and regulating rates.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It gives an <\/span><\/span><\/span>idea of the cost of the standard of living<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • If there is <\/span><\/span><\/span>inflation <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(when goods and services cost more) the<\/span><\/span><\/span> CPI will rise over a period of time<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. If the <\/span><\/span><\/span>CPI drops<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, that <\/span><\/span><\/span>means there is deflation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (steady reduction in the prices of goods and services).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • CPI formula: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(Price of basket in current period\/Price of basket in base period) x 100.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Inflation<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    • It refers to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>rise in the prices of most goods and services <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of daily or common use, such as food, clothing, housing, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Inflation measures the average price change in a basket of commodities and services over time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Inflation is indicative of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>decrease in the purchasing power <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of a unit of a country\u2019s currency. This could ultimately lead to a <\/span><\/span><\/span>deceleration in economic growth<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • However, a moderate level of inflation is required in the economy to ensure that production is promoted.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • In India, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>NSO under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>measures inflation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • In India, inflation is primarily measured by <\/span><\/span><\/span>two main indices<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

Jivan Vayu<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has developed a device called \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Jivan Vayu<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It is <\/span><\/span><\/span>India\u2019s first such deviceIndia\u2019s first Continuous Positive Airway Pressure <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(CPAP)<\/span><\/span><\/span> device<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> which <\/span><\/span><\/span>functions even without electricity<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and is <\/span><\/span><\/span>adapted to both kinds of oxygen generation units<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> like O2 cylinders and oxygen pipelines in hospitals.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • These provisions are <\/span><\/span><\/span>not available in otherwise existing CPAP machines <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>so Jivan Vayu can be used as their substitutes.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • CPAP <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>is a treatment method for patients having breathing problems during sleep called <\/span><\/span><\/span>sleep apnea <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and to treat <\/span><\/span><\/span>infants whose lungs have not fully developed<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The machine uses <\/span><\/span><\/span>mild air pressure to keep the airways open<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> for easy breathing.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The treatment is all the more necessary during early stages of the Covid-19 infection as it reduces lung damage and allows patients to recover from the inflammatory effects.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Jivan Vayu is <\/span><\/span><\/span>leak-proof, low-cost<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>customisable <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and can <\/span><\/span><\/span>run during power failures<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It has an<\/span><\/span><\/span> inbuilt viral filter<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> at the air entertainment end which has a <\/span><\/span><\/span>viral efficacy of 99.99 per cent<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The device has been <\/span><\/span><\/span>manufactured using 3D printing<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and has also been tested mechanically.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It can <\/span><\/span><\/span>deliver high flow oxygen<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (20-60 LPM) while maintaining a continuous positive pressure of up to 20 cm H2O.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Forex Reserve<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

India\u2019s <\/span><\/span><\/span>foreign exchange reserves<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> crossed the <\/span><\/span><\/span>$600 billion mark<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> for the first time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Foreign exchange reserves are important assets held by the <\/span><\/span><\/span>central bank in foreign currencie<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>s as reserves.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Most of the reserves are usually held in <\/span><\/span><\/span>US dollars<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> given the currency\u2019s importance in the international financial and trading system.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Some central banks keep reserves in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Euros, British pounds, Japanese yen or Chinese yuan in addition to their US dollar reserves<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • They are commonly used to support the <\/span><\/span><\/span>exchange rate and set monetary policy<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • India\u2019s forex reserves include <\/span><\/span><\/span>Foreign Currency Assets(FCA), Gold reserves, Special Drawing Rights(SDR), Reserve Tranche Position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The forex reserves are managed by the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Reserve Bank of Indi<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>a for the Indian government and the main component is foreign currency assets and they act as the<\/span><\/span><\/span> first line of defence for India in case of economic crisis.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Significance\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • It also limits external <\/span><\/span><\/span>vulnerability by maintaining foreign currency liquidity to absorb shocks during<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> times of crisis or when access to borrowing is curtailed<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The reserve<\/span><\/span><\/span> facilitates external trade and payment and promotes <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>orderly development and maintenance of foreign exchange market in India.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Countries with the highest foreign reserves<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • Currently, <\/span><\/span><\/span>China <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>has the largest reserves followed by <\/span><\/span><\/span>Japan, Switzerland, Russia and India <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>on the International Monetary Fund table.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

New Atlantic Charter<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, President Joe Biden and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson inspected documents related to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Atlantic Charter.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The two leaders plan to sign what they\u2019re calling a new <\/span><\/span><\/span>Atlantic Charter, pledging to \u201cdefend the principles, values, and institutions of democracy and open societies.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The Atlantic Charter is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>declaration signed by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>in August 1941, setting out common goals for the world after <\/span><\/span><\/span>the Second World War.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Those <\/span><\/span><\/span>goals <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>included<\/span><\/span><\/span> freer trade, disarmament <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and <\/span><\/span><\/span>the right to self-determination of all people<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>,they desired no territorial changes without the free assent of the peoples concerned, neither nation sought any aggrandizement.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • They hoped to promote worldwide collaboration to improve labour standards, economic progress, and social security.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

Dagmara Hydro-Electric Project<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • A <\/span><\/span><\/span>Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has been signed between NHPC Limited and Bihar State Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited (BSHPC) for Implementation of the Dagmara<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Hydro-Electric Project\u00a0 over the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kosi River in Supaul district.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Dagmara multipurpose hydropower project\u2014i<\/span><\/span><\/span>s coming up 31 km downstream on Kosi river<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> under Bhaptiyahi block in Supaul district<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The cost of Project is presently considered as Rs<\/span><\/span><\/span> 2435.91 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>crore to be actualized as appraised by CEA during Detailed Project Report (DPR) clearance.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The total generation capacity of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Run-of-River\u2019 project<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> will be 130.1 MW, which will comprise two power houses, while the barrage length would be 753 metre and it would have 36 gates on river Kosi River.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The Government of Bihar shall purchase the <\/span><\/span><\/span>entire powe<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>r to be generated from the Project for its complete life .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is the largest hydropower project of Bihar to be implemented by NHPC on ownership basis.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Significance\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
