Recently, <\/span><\/span><\/span>NTPC Ltd<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>India\u2019s largest power utility<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> under the Ministry of Power, has become a signatory to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>CEO Water Mandate<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>UN Global Compact initiative<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It was established in <\/span><\/span><\/span>2007 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and is implemented in <\/span><\/span><\/span>partnership with the Pacific Institute<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Aim:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> To demonstrate commitment and efforts of companies to better their water and sanitation agendas as part of long term Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Commitment Areas:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Direct operations, supply chain and watershed management, collective action, public policy, community engagement and transparency.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is <\/span><\/span><\/span>designed to assist companies<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>development, implementation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>disclosure<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of comprehensive water strategies and policies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It also <\/span><\/span><\/span>provides a platform for companies to partner with <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>like-minded businesses, UN agencies, public authorities, civil society organizations and other key stakeholders.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Carbon Nanotubes (CNTs)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, researchers at the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Massachusetts Institute of Technology<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (MIT) have discovered a new way to generate electricity by <\/span><\/span><\/span>carbon nanotubes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  • By grinding up nanotubes and dipping them in special solvents, it is possible to generate enough current to run important electrochemical reactions.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • CNTs are<\/span><\/span><\/span> cylindrical molecules<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> consisting of a <\/span><\/span><\/span>hexagonal arrangement of hybridized carbon atoms<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, formed by rolling up sheets of <\/span><\/span><\/span>graphene<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • They can be <\/span><\/span><\/span>single-walled carbon nanotubes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (SWCNTs) with a diameter of less than 1 nanometer (nm) or<\/span><\/span><\/span> multi-walled carbon nanotubes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (MWCNTs), consisting of several concentrically interlinked nanotubes, with diameters reaching more than 100 nm.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Types<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • Armchair NTs<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>: Called so because of the armchair-like shape of their edges and have identical chiral indices and are highly desired for their <\/span><\/span><\/span>perfect conductivity<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • Chirality <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>describes the angle of the nanotube’s hexagonal carbon-atom lattice.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Zigzag NTs: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>May be <\/span><\/span><\/span>semiconductors<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • Turning a graphene sheet a mere 30 degrees will change the nanotube it forms from armchair to zigzag or vice versa.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

          • Mechanical tensile strength can be 400 times that of steel.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Operation Pangea XIV<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>International Criminal Police Organization <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(INTERPOL) has coordinated <\/span><\/span><\/span>Operation Pangea XIV<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It is a collaborative effort a<\/span><\/span><\/span>gainst the sale of fake and illicit medicines and medical products<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It involved<\/span><\/span><\/span> police, customs and health regulatory authorities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> from <\/span><\/span><\/span>92 countries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Indian agencies<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> also participated in the operation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Central Bureau of Investigation <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(CBI) is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> nodal body<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> for the INTERPOL in the country.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • It <\/span><\/span><\/span>resulted in<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> 113,020 web links (websites and online marketplaces) being closed down or removed, arrest of 277 suspects and seizure of potentially dangerous pharmaceuticals worth over USD 23 million, the highest number since the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first Operation Pangea in 2008<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • More than half of all the medical devices seized during the operation in May only were fake and unauthorised Covid-19 test kits.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>online sale of illicit medicines<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> continues to pose a <\/span><\/span><\/span>threat to public safety<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which is why such operations remain vital.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>pandemic forced<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> more people to <\/span><\/span><\/span>move their lives online<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and criminals were quick to target these new \u2018customers\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan<\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<\/td>\n

  • Recently,the NITI Aayog and Piramal Foundation launched the \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Surakshit Hum Surakshit Tum Abhiyaan\u2019 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>in 112 <\/span><\/span><\/span>Aspirational Districts.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The campaign will be led by district magistrates in partnership with over one thousand local NGOs, which will enlist and train over<\/span><\/span><\/span> one lakh volunteers to connect with patients through inbound and outbound calls<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. .<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Aim:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>To assist the district administrations in providing <\/span><\/span><\/span>home-care support to Covid-19<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> patients who are <\/span><\/span><\/span>asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Significance:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>It will provide long-term support to India\u2019s poorest communities in the Aspirational Districts by addressing the <\/span><\/span><\/span>lasting impact of Covid-19.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The campaign is expected to prepare districts to manage nearly <\/span><\/span><\/span>70% of Covid cases at home<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • This would further help in reducing the pressure on the health system.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The campaign will also undertake capacity building of citizens for the <\/span><\/span><\/span>correct usage of oxygen concentrators<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that have been supplied to the districts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Aspirational Districts Programme<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      • It is one of the largest experiments on <\/span><\/span><\/span>outcomes-focused governance in the world. Spread across 112 of India\u2019s socio-economically challenged<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> districts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • It is Niti Aayog\u2019s flagship initiative to improve health, nutrition, education, and economic outcomes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The programme aims at convergence (of Central & State Schemes), collaboration (of Central, State level \u2018Prabhari\u2019 Officers & District Collectors), and competition among districts driven by a mass movement.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The programme focuses on the strength of each district, identifies districts that require immediate improvement, measures their progress, and ranks them accordingly<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  • Vaccine nationalism occurs when a <\/span><\/span><\/span>country manages to secure doses<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of vaccine for its own citizens or residents before t<\/span><\/span><\/span>hey are made available in other countries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and this is done through pre-purchase agreements between a government and a vaccine manufacturer.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Vaccine nationalism is not new<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The present race to hoard Covid-19 vaccines are similar to a situation that happened in 2009 during the <\/span><\/span><\/span>H1N1 flu pandemic.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0Australia, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first country to come up with a vaccine, blocked exports while some of the wealthiest <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>countries entered into pre-purchase agreements with several pharmaceutical companies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  • It lies in the foothills of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Eastern Himalaya in the East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It falls within the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Eastern Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

  • The navies of India and Thailand started\u00a0 their three-day, bi-annually I<\/span><\/span><\/span>ndia-Thailand Coordinated Patrol (Indo-Thai CORPAT) <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>in the Andaman Sea .<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The 31st edition of the joint exercise comes in the backdrop of China\u2019s expanding presence in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Indian Ocean region.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Indo-Thai CORPAT, which began in 2005,<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> serves to <\/span><\/span><\/span>reinforce maritime links between Thailand and India<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and forge strong bonds of friendship between the two navies, besides helping consolidate interoperability.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

    • It aims to keep this v<\/span><\/span><\/span>ital part of the Indian Ocean safe<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and secure for international trade.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It facilitates institution of measures to prevent and suppress unlawful activities like illegal unreported unregulated (IUU) fishing, drug trafficking, maritime terrorism, armed robbery and piracy.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • The Indian Navy has been holding several such exercises and combat readiness war games with friendly countries.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • In April 2020\u00a0 witnessed the bilateral \u2018Varuna\u2019 naval exercises between <\/span><\/span><\/span>India and France in the western Arabian Sea.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • The exercise also saw the participation of the fledgling United Arab Emirates (UAE) Navy, making Varuna-21, a trilateral exercise.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
