  • The term Karen refers to a <\/span><\/span><\/span>number of ethnic groups with Tibetan-Central Asian<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> origins.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • These are <\/span><\/span><\/span>indigenous <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to the<\/span><\/span><\/span> Thailand-Myanmar border region in Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • They speak <\/span><\/span><\/span>Karenic languages<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>12 related but mutually unintelligible languages<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019 that are part of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tibeto-Burman group of the Sino-Tibetan<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> family.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The vast <\/span><\/span><\/span>majority <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of Karen are <\/span><\/span><\/span>Buddhists <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and a large number <\/span><\/span><\/span>converted to Christianity<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> during <\/span><\/span><\/span>British <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>rule.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Karen National Liberation Army<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>armed wing of the Karen National Union<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, the main <\/span><\/span><\/span>political organization<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> representing the Karen minority.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Karen <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kachin in northern Myanmar<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> are the two major ethnic armed organisations that have<\/span><\/span><\/span> allied themselves<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with the movement against the junta that took power in Myanmar.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Broadbalk Experiment<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Broadbalk field<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Hertfordshire county of southern England <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>has been under continuous scientific experiments for the past <\/span><\/span><\/span>178 years<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, making it the<\/span><\/span><\/span> world\u2019s oldest and longest running study<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It was started by <\/span><\/span><\/span>agricultural scientist<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>John Bennet Lawes<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and<\/span><\/span><\/span> chemist Joseph Henry Gilbert <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>under the Rothamsted Research institution in the autumn of <\/span><\/span><\/span>1843<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, when the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first crop of wheat was sown<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> there.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Every year, researchers sown winter wheat on all or some parts of the field to compare crop yields, when grown<\/span><\/span><\/span> using inorganic fertilisers<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with those when grown <\/span><\/span><\/span>using organic or farmyard manure<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (FYM). A patch that receives <\/span><\/span><\/span>no fertiliser or manure inputs<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is also maintained for control treatment.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Aim: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>To test the <\/span><\/span><\/span>effects of different organic and inorganic fertilisers on soil fertility<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and study the optimum nutrition requirements to improve crop yield.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • In <\/span><\/span><\/span>India <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>too, <\/span><\/span><\/span>long-term fertiliser experiments are being carried out<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> at 17<\/span><\/span><\/span> Indian Council of Agricultural Research<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (ICAR) <\/span><\/span><\/span>centres since 1970 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to study changes in soil quality, crop productivity and sustainability.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Oath Administration in Legislature<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • Article 164(3)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the Indian Constitution states that before a Minister enters upon his office, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Governor shall administer to him the oaths<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of office and <\/span><\/span><\/span>of secrecy<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> according to the forms set out in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Third Schedule<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>Third Schedule <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>requires the taker of the oath to either \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>swear in the name of God<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d or to \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>solemnly affirm<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d to \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>bear true faith and allegiance to the Constitution<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Article 164 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>makes it clear that the text of the oath is <\/span><\/span><\/span>sacrosanct<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and the person taking the oath has to <\/span><\/span><\/span>read it out exactly as it is, in the given format<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • If a Minister wanders from the text of the oath, it is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> responsibility of the Governor<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, who is administering the oath, <\/span><\/span><\/span>to interrupt and ask <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>the person being sworn in <\/span><\/span><\/span>to read it out correctly<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Once the Governor takes it as read<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Secretary <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to the Governor <\/span><\/span><\/span>has attested <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>that the oath has been administered, it <\/span><\/span><\/span>cannot be legally challenged<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
