  • Aim:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> To protect 5% of the world ocean in five years.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • To protect and conserve the large areas of the ocean from damaging fishing practices, pollution, and climate change.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Target areas: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Antarctica, Seychelles, Canada, Palau, Western Indian Ocean, Fiji, Tristan da Cunha, an island in the South Atlantic Ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Need: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Oceans are integral to human survival, helping to regulate rainfall, weather, and even oxygen levels in the air.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • According to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Marine Protection Atlas<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, around 7% of global oceans have been designated as protected areas, but only 2.7% is considered “fully protected.”<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • Marine Protection Atlas<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> was launched by the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Marine Conservation Institute in 2012<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to provide the best available information on marine protection all over the world.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  • India has been elected to three key bodies of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (UN ECOSOC)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The three year term begins on January 1, 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • These bodies are:<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
        \n
      • Based in Vienna.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • It acts as the principal policy-making body of the United Nations in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The CCPCJ has 40 member states that are elected by ECOSOC.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Executive Board of UN Women<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
          \n
        • UN Women is about gender issues.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • The Executive Board of UN Women consists of 41 members.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Executive Board of the World Food Programme<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

          • It is WFP’s supreme governing body.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Van Dhan Vikas Yojana<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • Van Dhan Vikas Yojana <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>is promoting and backing tribal entrepreneurship in a big way.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • It was launched on <\/span><\/span><\/span>14th April 2018.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
        \n
      • It is a component of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Mechanism for Marketing of<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Minor Forest Produce (MFP)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> through <\/span><\/span><\/span>Minimum Support Price (MSP)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Development of Value Chain for MFP\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • MFP includes all n<\/span><\/span><\/span>on-timber forest produce<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of plant origin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • MSP is a system of agriculture in India, in which the government <\/span><\/span><\/span>declares the purchase price of certain crops<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and guarantees them in case the farmer is unable to garner such prices in the open market.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • It is an initiative of the<\/span><\/span><\/span> Ministry of Tribal Affairs<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • The<\/span><\/span><\/span> Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> as the nodal agency at the National level.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
          \n
        • TRIFED is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>apex national organisation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> involved in the improvement of the livelihood and empowerment of these tribal people.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • It is a<\/span><\/span><\/span> 100% centrally funded scheme.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • Aims: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>To improve tribal income through value addition of MFP like non-timber items such as bamboo and other grasses, edible or useful roots, seeds, fruits, flowers and plants, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
            \n
          • Collection and sale of MFPs contribute 40-60 % of tribal annual earnings<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and further value addition helps in tripling or quadrupling their income.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
          • A large number of tribal community owned<\/span><\/span><\/span> Van Dhan Vikas Kendras (VDVKs)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> have been set up in predominantly forested tribal districts.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

            • A \u2018Kendra\u2019 generally constitute 15 tribal Self Help Groups (SHGs), each comprising up to 20 tribal non-timber MFP gatherers or artisans, i.e. about 300 beneficiaries per Van Dhan Kendra.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  • Former Reserve Bank of India <\/span><\/span><\/span>Governor Maidavolu Narasimham<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, famously known as the <\/span><\/span><\/span>father of<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Indian banking reforms<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, passed away<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • He was awarded <\/span><\/span><\/span>Padma Vibhushan <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>award in the year 2000.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Role and Contributions<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      • He was the <\/span><\/span><\/span>13th governor of RBI<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and he served as the central bank head from May 2, 1977, to November 30, 1977.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • After his short term as RBI governor, he served as India’s executive director at the <\/span><\/span><\/span>World Bank and later at the International Monetary Fund (IMF<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • He was the first and so far the only governor to be appointed from the Reserve Bank cadre, having joined the Bank as a <\/span><\/span><\/span>Research Officer in the Economics Department.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

    • It is mandated to<\/span><\/span><\/span> fund youth in communities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> impacted by the pandemic to take up innovative programmes to rebuild lives.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

  • The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology announced a <\/span><\/span><\/span>#FOSS4GOV Innovation Challenge<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to accelerate the adoption of<\/span><\/span><\/span> Free and Open Source Software (FOSS)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the Government.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Open-source software<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> requires <\/span><\/span><\/span>no licensing<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and need not be bought.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Its source code is open for everyone to download, examine, and improve upon if they can, with an acknowledgement to the original software coder or the company.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
