<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong><u>About the Day<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>History<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The idea of commemorating such a day was propounded by <strong>Gaylord Nelson<\/strong>, an <strong>American environmentalist and politician<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Earth Day was <strong>first observed in 1970<\/strong> against environmental degradation.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It was triggered by the <strong>1969 Santa Barbara oil spill<\/strong>, as well as other issues such as <strong>smog <\/strong>and <strong>polluted rivers<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">In <strong>2009<\/strong>, the <strong>United Nations<\/strong> designated 22<sup>nd<\/sup> April as \u2018<strong>International Mother Earth Day<\/strong>\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>Aims<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">To build the world\u2019s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and the planet.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">To diversify, educate, activate the environmental movement and raise awareness worldwide.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>Theme for 2021:<\/strong> &#8216;Restore Our Earth&#8217;.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It focuses on natural processes, emerging green technologies and innovative thinking that can restore the world\u2019s ecosystems.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic is a chance to set the world on a cleaner, greener, more sustainable path.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It is <strong>coordinated globally<\/strong> by the <strong>Earth Day Network<\/strong> and celebrated in <strong>more than 193 countries<\/strong> each year.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Earth Day Network is a <strong>nonprofit organization<\/strong> whose mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>Headquarter: <\/strong>Washington DC, USA.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong><u>Significance<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The landmark <strong><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\">Paris Agreement<\/span><\/strong>, which sets a common target to<strong> reduce global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions<\/strong>, was<strong> signed on this day in 2016<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The Paris Agreement is a <strong>legally binding international treaty on climate change<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It was adopted by <strong>196 Parties at Conference of Parties (COP) 21<\/strong> in <strong>Paris<\/strong>, on <strong>12<sup>th<\/sup> December 2015<\/strong> and <strong>entered into force<\/strong> on <strong>4<sup>th<\/sup> November 2016<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, <strong>preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius<\/strong>, compared to pre-industrial levels.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It also <strong>recognizes a collective responsibility<\/strong> to promote harmony with nature and the Earth to achieve a just balance among the economic, social and environmental needs of present and future generations of humanity, as called for in the <strong>1992 Rio Declaration <\/strong>(<strong>Earth Summit<\/strong>).<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">The Earth Summit was a direct consequence of the <strong>Brundtland Commission\u2019s Report<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">It resulted in the <strong>Framework Convention on Climate Change<\/strong> (UNFCCC), the <strong>Convention on Biological Diversity<\/strong>, the <strong>Statement on Forest Principles<\/strong> and the <strong>Rio Declaration Agenda 21<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">Several major climate-related events are taking place in parallel on Earth Day in 2021,\u00a0 including the <strong>Leaders\u2019 Summit on Climate, hosted by the US<\/strong> and \u200dan <strong>Exponential Climate Action Summit on Financing the Race to Zero emissions<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>US Leaders\u2019 Summit<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\">After re-entering the global climate?fight, US President Biden is convening the Summit with the<strong> participation of 40 world leaders<\/strong>.<\/span><\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial,sans-serif;\"><strong>India will also participate<\/strong> in it, highlighting its role to <strong><span style=\"color: #1155cc;\">combat climate
