World Liver Day<\/h3>\n

  • It is observed every year on 19 April.<\/li>\n
  • Aim:<\/strong> To spread awareness about liver-related disease.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • The liver is the second largest<\/strong> and the most complex organ <\/strong>in the body, with the exception of the brain.<\/li>\n
    • It is responsible for many important functions like processing nutrients, filtering the blood, producing bile, regulating hormones, maintaining blood sugar levels, blood clotting and fighting infections.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), liver diseases are the tenth most common cause of death in India.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Liver diseases can be caused by hepatitis A, B, C, alcohol <\/strong>and drugs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • The consumption of contaminated food, water<\/strong> and drug abuse<\/strong> are the reasons behind viral hepatitis disease.\n
        \n
      • \u201cHepato\u201d means liver and \u201citis\u201d means inflammation. Hence, Hepatitis means the inflammation of the liver.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Cirrhosis<\/strong> is a complication of liver disease that involves loss of liver cells and irreversible scarring of the liver.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Gallantry Awards<\/h3>\n

  • Gallantry Awards have been instituted by the Government of India to honour the acts of bravery and sacrifice<\/strong> of the officers\/personnel of the Armed Forces, other lawfully constituted forces and civilians.<\/li>\n
  • These gallantry awards are announced twice a year – first on the occasion of Republic Day and then on the occasion of Independence Day.<\/li>\n

Lingaraj Temple<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • It was built during the 11th century AD.<\/li>\n
  • The temple has been described as \u201cOne of the finest examples of purely Hindu temples in India.<\/li>\n
  • Lingaraj is referred to as \u2018Swayambhu\u201d \u2013 (self-originated Shivling).<\/li>\n
  • The temple marks the culmination of the temple architecture in Bhubaneswar, Odisha which was the cradle of the Kalinga School of Temple Architecture<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The sprawling temple complex has one hundred and fifty subsidiary<\/strong> shrines.<\/li>\n
  • The temples are considered a masterpiece of Indian Architecture for their detailed plan, proportions, seamless joints, elegant craftsmanship and impressive dimensions.<\/li>\n
  • The temple can broadly be divided into four main halls.\n
      \n
    • The Garbhagriha (Sanctum Sanctorum).<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • \u00a0The Yajana Mandapa<\/strong> (the hall for prayers)<\/li>\n
    • The Natya Mandapa<\/strong> (dance and music hall)<\/li>\n
    • The Bhoga Mandapa <\/strong>(where devotees can have the Prasad (offering) of the Lord).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • The exquisite carvings depicting chores of daily life, the activity centres, apart from being a place of worship makes the temple a place for social and cultural gathering, somewhat like a modern community centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Disc-Footed Bat<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • Scientific name:<\/strong> Eudiscopus denticulus.<\/em><\/li>\n
  • Habitat:<\/strong> Southern China, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar.<\/li>\n
  • It is India\u2019s first bamboo-dwelling bat with sticky disks<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • It has been recorded in Meghalaya\u2019s Lailad <\/strong>area near the Nongkhyllem Wildlife Sanctuary<\/strong>, about 1,000 km west of its nearest known habitat in Myanmar.\n
      \n
    • It has raised Meghalaya\u2019s bat count to 66<\/strong>, the most <\/strong>for any State in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • The Zoological Survey of India<\/strong> (ZSI) came across this very specialised small bat with disk-like pads in the thumb<\/strong> and bright orange colouration<\/strong> while sampling in a bamboo patch in 2020.<\/li>\n
    • Its flattened skull<\/strong> and adhesive pads<\/strong> enable them to roost inside cramped spaces, clinging to smooth surfaces such as bamboo internodes.<\/li>\n
    • It is also genetically very different <\/strong>from all other known bats bearing disk-like pads.<\/li>\n
    • Its very high frequency echolocation calls<\/strong> are suitable for orientation in a cluttered environment such as inside bamboo groves.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Oxygen Express<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • These will be run by the Railways <\/strong>in the following days to transport Liquid Medical Oxygen<\/strong> (LMO) and oxygen cylinders<\/strong> across the country.<\/li>\n
  • The requirement for Medical Oxygen is a critical component in the treatment of Covid-19 <\/strong>affected patients and it has increased manifold amidst the resurgence of cases.<\/li>\n
  • These will send oxygen wherever there is a demand<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • Green Corridors <\/strong>are being created for fast movement of Oxygen Express trains which will transport LMO through roll-on-roll-off (Ro-Ro) service with road tankers placed on flat wagons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

World Heritage Day 2021<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • Every year, it is celebrated on 18th April<\/strong> and is also known as International Day for Monuments and Sites<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • History:<\/strong> In 1982<\/strong>, the International Council on Monuments and Sites<\/strong> (ICOMOS) suggested to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization<\/strong> (UNESCO) that 18th April should be celebrated as this day, which was approved during the 22nd General Conference in 1983<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • Theme for 2021:<\/strong> Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures\n

    • The conservation of cultural heritage requires careful examination of the past, and its practice demands provision for the future<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
