{"id":14832,"date":"2021-04-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/16-04-2021\/hydrogen-economy-new-delhi-dialogue-2021\/"},"modified":"2021-04-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T00:00:00","slug":"hydrogen-economy-new-delhi-dialogue-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-04-2021\/hydrogen-economy-new-delhi-dialogue-2021","title":{"rendered":"Hydrogen Economy \u2013 New Delhi Dialogue 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Energy Forum (TEF)<\/strong> and the <strong>Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI)<\/strong>, under the aegis of the <strong>Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas<\/strong>, are organising a <strong>Hydrogen Roundtable titled \u201cHydrogen Economy- the Indian Dialogue-2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About The Hydrogen Economy \u2013 New Delhi Dialogue 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will comprise a <strong>High-level Ministerial Session<\/strong>, followed by<strong> five Panel Discussions<\/strong> by eminent <strong>policymakers, experts and industry leaders<\/strong> from different geographical regions of the world, with focus on policy roadmaps and mapping demand and supply of Hydrogen.<\/li>\n<li>The Hydrogen Roundtable will have 25 panellists from15 countries, discussing the potential of Hydrogen from multiple sources and its relevance in national energy transitions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Objectives<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To understand the progress of the Hydrogen ecosystem across continents and contribute to creating synchrony among the think tanks,\u00a0 Governments and the industry to join forces for developing innovative and sustainable technologies at attractive costs.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to discuss emerging hydrogen ecosystems and exploring opportunities for collaboration, cooperation and coalition.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Takeaways <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India and the United States will launch a<strong> Hydrogen Task Force<\/strong> under the Strategic Energy Partnership between the two countries soon,<\/li>\n<li>hydrogen will be especially valuable for large-scale and long-duration energy storage to &#8220;meet our goal of a completely carbon-free grid by 2035<\/li>\n<li>The UAE has also expressed keenness to work with India public and private sectors to help develop the hydrogen market and support New Delhi&#8217;s growing demand for energy and need for cleaner fuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>Hydrogen Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The term <strong>&#8220;hydrogen economy<\/strong>&#8221; refers to the vision of using hydrogen as a low-carbon <strong>energy source <\/strong>\u2013 replacing, for example,<strong> gasoline <\/strong>as a transport fuel or <strong>natural gas as heating fuel.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen is a promising energy carrier and has the potential to address various energy sector challenges and technically from the application point of view, substituting conventional fuels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>What is Hydrogen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is considered the future of <strong>clean and sustainable energy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It can be directly used as a <strong>fuel similar to natural gas<\/strong> or as input for fuel cells to <strong>generate electricity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The sources and processes by which hydrogen is derived, are categorised by colour tabs.\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen produced from <strong>fossil fuels is called grey hydrogen<\/strong>, this constitutes the bulk of the<strong> hydrogen produced today.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Hydrogen generated from <strong>fossil fuels with carbon capture<\/strong> and storage options is <strong>called blue hydrogen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Hydrogen generated entirely from renewable power sources is called green hydrogen.<\/li>\n<li>In the last process, electricity generated from renewable energy is used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen in an electrolyser.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experts believe hydrogen vehicles can be effective in long-haul trucking and other hard-to-electrify sectors such as shipping and long-haul air travel.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen is about<strong> two to three times<\/strong> as efficient as burning petrol because an electric chemical reaction is much more efficient than combustion.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen can act as an<strong> energy storage option<\/strong>, which would be <strong>essential to meet intermittencies (of renewable energy)<\/strong> in the future.<\/li>\n<li>It ensures regional and national energy security, access and availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A big barrier to the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has been a lack of fuelling station infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0There are fewer than 500 operational hydrogen stations in the world today, mostly in Europe, followed by Japan and South Korea.<\/li>\n<li>Safety is seen as a concern and it is highly flammable.<\/li>\n<li>In terms of challenges to green hydrogen specifically, the cost of renewable electricity is the major problem.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Government Initiatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The government has taken various initiatives with respect to the greater use of hydrogen in India\u2019s energy mix.<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Hydrogen Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It had recently announced the National Hydrogen Mission in the Union Budget 2021 for making a hydrogen roadmap for the country.<\/li>\n<li>It aims to generate hydrogen from green power sources.<\/li>\n<li>It is essential to decarbonise heavy industries like steel and cement, it also holds the key to clean electric mobility that doesn\u2019t depend on rare minerals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>SATAT scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen is also capable of aligning with the Ministry\u2019s other flagship schemes, like the promotion of compressed biogas under the Sustainable Alternative for Affordable towards Transportation <strong>(SATAT) scheme<\/strong> or promoting the gas-based economy or other initiatives on Waste-to-Energy.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Such integration will impart much more flexibility and capacity utilization to the vast infrastructure available or being created in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a need to reduce electrolyser costs and supply chain logistics.<\/li>\n<li>This will require funding.<\/li>\n<li>Policymakers should also consider how to create legislative frameworks that facilitate the integration of the hydrogen-based sector.<\/li>\n<li>Public investments need to be strategized and channelised well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1711805\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source :PIB<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News The Energy Forum (TEF) and the Federation of Indian Petroleum Industry (FIPI), under the aegis of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, are organising a Hydrogen Roundtable titled \u201cHydrogen Economy- the Indian Dialogue-2021.
