It rises in the Black Forest mountains of western Germany and flows for some 2,850 km to its mouth on the Black Sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Recommendations made<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Enhanced controls of domestic trade;<\/li>\n<li>Control of CITES caviar labelling requirements;<\/li>\n<li>Improved inter-agency cooperation and coordination;<\/li>\n<li>Increased border controls;<\/li>\n<li>Use of State-of-the-art forensic analysis; and<\/li>\n<li>Conducting more and recurrent market surveys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Sturgeon<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>History<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sturgeons have existed since the<strong> time of dinosaurs, for about 200 million years<\/strong>. Some of the species can grow up to eight metre in length and live more than a century.\n<ul>\n<li>They are called<strong> \u2018living fossils\u2019<\/strong> because their appearance has altered very little over the years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Living Fossil<\/strong> is an organism that has remained unchanged from earlier geologic times and whose close relatives are usually extinct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sturgeons are <strong>economically and culturally<\/strong> important in every river basin and country across their<strong> traditional range.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Habitat<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 27 species of <strong>sturgeons and paddlefishes<\/strong> distributed across <strong>the Northern hemisphere. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>While some species<strong> inhabit the only freshwater<\/strong>,<strong> most species are anadromous<\/strong>, spawning in freshwater but spending much of their life history in marine or brackish environments.<\/li>\n<li>All species are <strong>late-maturing and slow-growing<\/strong> and <strong>do not reproduce annually<\/strong>, making them slow to rebound from exploitation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Threats<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Habitat degradation<\/strong>, primarily due to damming of large rivers that many migratory sturgeons use for reproduction, has been a major driver of species decline.<\/li>\n<li>Dams have restricted access to spawning habitats and <strong>altered the flow and temperature regimes <\/strong>required for migration and rearing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Estuary habitat transformation and degradation <\/strong>have negatively affected juvenile recruitment.<\/li>\n<li>The fish species are<strong> poached for their meat and caviar<\/strong>, which is considered a delicacy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Protection status<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There are 6 species of sturgeon in the Danube River.
