{"id":14728,"date":"2021-04-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/09-04-2021\/india-seychelles-high-level-virtual-meet\/"},"modified":"2021-04-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-09T00:00:00","slug":"india-seychelles-high-level-virtual-meet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-04-2021\/india-seychelles-high-level-virtual-meet","title":{"rendered":"India-Seychelles High-Level Virtual Meet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister of India and President of the Republic of Seychelles jointly inaugurated a range of <strong>Development Assistance Projects<\/strong> at India-Seychelles High-Level Virtual Event that was held recently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Highlights of\u00a0 Cooperation Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Magistrates\u2019 Court building<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the countries jointly inaugurated the new <strong>Magistrates\u2019 Court building <\/strong>in <strong>Seychelles.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The new Magistrates\u2019 Court built with modern design and state-of-the-art facilities will serve as the perfect seat for the<strong> delivery of judicial services to the people of Seychelles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The building is the first Indian <strong>assisted infrastructure project <\/strong>in Seychelles and has been completed with grant assistance of USD 3.5 million from the Government of India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Fast Patrol Vessel<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prime Minister of India also handed over a <strong>48.9 m Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV)<\/strong> to Seychelles for the use of the <strong>Seychelles Coast Guard.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This will <strong>significantly boost the capability<\/strong> of the <strong>Seychelles Coast Guard<\/strong> in effectively patrolling and protecting its vast marine estate and help in combating threats such as maritime piracy, drug and arms smuggling and illegal fishing in Seychelles\u2019 waters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a01 MW ground-mounted Solar Power Plant <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During the event, both sides have jointly e-inaugurated a 1 MW ground-mounted <strong>Solar Power Plant built <\/strong>with Indian grant assistance in <strong>Romainville Island of Seychelles. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>One MegaWatt solar power plant<\/strong> in Seychelles built with India\u2019s assistance would help fight the threat of climate change.<\/li>\n<li>Ten (10) Indian High Impact Community Development Projects (HICDPs) in Seychelles were also e-inaugurated by the two dignitaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The inauguration of the key projects demonstrates India\u2019s privileged and time-tested role as a reliable partner of Seychelles for meeting its i<strong>nfrastructural, developmental and security requirements. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Seychelles is central to India\u2019s vision of <strong>\u2018SAGAR\u2019 &#8211; \u2018Security and Growth for All in the Region\u2019. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India is developing infrastructure in the country to expand its footprint in the strategically key region in the<strong> Indian Ocean where China <\/strong>has been trying to <strong>enhance its military presence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>India and Seychelles relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bilateral Engagement <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s bilateral engagement with Seychelles has evolved over our historical contacts and continuous support to Seychelles for its <strong>security, even as our bilateral trade remains modest.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Today, India-Seychelles relations are characterized by <strong>close friendship, understanding and cooperation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Diplomatic ties <\/strong>were established with Seychelles after its independence in <strong>1976<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>An Indian Mission was established in 1979 in Victoria, with the High Commissioner based in Dar-es-Salaam and concurrently accredited to Seychelles.<\/li>\n<li>During times of need, India was able to supply essential medicines and 50 thousand doses of Made in India vaccines to Seychelles.\n<ul>\n<li>Seychelles was the first African country to receive the Made in India COVID-19 vaccines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Trade &#038; Investment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Our bilateral trade and commerce with Seychelles are rather modest.<\/li>\n<li>Presently, Seychelles\u2019 main items of<strong> impor<\/strong>t from India are rice, miscellaneous food products, cement, linen, cotton, vehicles &#038; associated transport equipment, medicines, instruments and appliances for medical, surgical &#038; dental use.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India exported goods <\/strong>worth US$ 42.06 million and imported goods worth US$ 1.37 million from Seychelles during the financial year 2017-18.\n<ul>\n<li>From April to July 2019 India exported goods worth <strong>US $ 17.92<\/strong> to Seychelles and imported goods worth<strong> US $ 0.46 million<\/strong> from Seychelles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>India offered a second line of <strong>credit for the defence and maritime security<\/strong> cooperation of Seychelles for an amount of USD 100million<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Energy and Environment<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Blue Economy Protocol was signed <\/strong>between <strong>India and Seychelles<\/strong> in August 2015.<\/li>\n<li>In pursuance of the <strong>bilateral MOU on Renewable, Energy Cooperation<\/strong> signed during PM\u2019s visit to <strong>Seychelles in March 2015<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Meanwhile, the two countries have been supportive of each other\u2019s position in the <strong>international fora on issues related to climate change<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>With the ratification of the<strong> International Solar Alliance (ISA)<\/strong> Framework Agreement in September 2017, Seychelles has officially become one of the <strong>Founding Members of ISA.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Cultural Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>With a significant presence of the Indian Diaspora in Seychelles, cultural contacts between the two countries have been primarily <strong>community-driven<\/strong> with support from the two governments.<\/li>\n<li>At the initiative of prominent PIO associations in Seychelles, several Indian cultural troupes regularly visit Seychelles for performance.<\/li>\n<li>In June 2018, CEP was signed with Seychelles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Indian Community<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India has an important link with Seychelles with the first small group of five Indians arriving in Seychelles in 1770.<\/li>\n<li>It took almost a hundred years thereafter for the next lot of Indians to set foot on Seychelles soil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Defence and Security Cooperation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India and Seychelles have an elaborate architecture of <strong>defence and security cooperation<\/strong> that has deepened over the years with the <strong>growing piracy menace<\/strong> and <strong>other economic offences<\/strong> in the <strong>strategic Indian Ocean region.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In pursuance of the <strong>MOU on Hydrography <\/strong>signed during the Prime Minister\u2019s visit in Mar 2015,<strong> Indian Naval Ship INS Darshak visited Seychelles<\/strong> in\u00a0 2015 to conduct a <strong>hydrographic survey of Victoria Port<\/strong> and adjoining areas.<\/li>\n<li>Two patrol boats <strong>PS Topaz and PS Constant<\/strong> were gifted by India to Seychelles in 2005 and 2014 respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Indian Coast Guard\u2019s Fast Interceptor Boat C-405 (rechristened \u2018PB Hermes\u2019) was gifted to Seychelles in 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/166340346119014660_image.png\" style=\"height:285px;
