International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21st March)<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • Adopted on 26th October 1966,<\/strong> the United Nations General Assembly<\/strong> proclaimed 21st March<\/strong> as this International Day to be commemorated annually<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • History: <\/strong>In 1960<\/strong>, on the same day, police killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville<\/strong>, South Africa<\/strong>, against the apartheid<\/strong> “pass laws<\/strong>“.<\/li>\n
  • Theme for 2021:<\/strong> Youth standing up against racism.\n
      \n
    • It engages the public through #FightRacism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Aim:<\/strong> To foster a global culture of tolerance, equality and anti-discrimination and calls on each and every one of us to stand up against racial prejudice and intolerant attitudes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Significance<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • It signifies the struggle to end the policy of apartheid in South Africa and calls on the international community to redouble its efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.<\/li>\n
      • Struggle against racial discrimination is one of the central elements of UNESCO’s work to build peace in the minds, through education for tolerance and the rejection of racist stereotypes that may persist in culture or in the media.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Ingenuity Mars Helicopter<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • It is a small, autonomous ultra-light aircraft<\/strong> that is carried to the surface of Mars <\/strong>attached to the belly of the Perseverance rover<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • The 1.8 kg rotorcraft<\/strong> cost NASA around USD 85 million<\/strong> to develop and is considered a proof of concept that could revolutionize space exploration.<\/li>\n
  • It is expected to make its first flight attempt<\/strong> no earlier than 11th April 2021<\/strong>, in an atmosphere <\/strong>that is one per cent the density of Earth’s<\/strong>, which makes achieving lift harder<\/strong>. However, it will be assisted by gravity<\/strong> (one-third of Earth\u2019s).<\/li>\n
  • Up to five flights of gradual difficulty are planned<\/strong> over the month and it will take high-resolution photographs <\/strong>during its flights.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

  • Birth:<\/strong> 5th April 1908 (2021 marks his 114th birth anniversary).<\/li>\n
  • Major Achievements<\/strong>\n

    • Founded the Akhil Bharatiya Ravidas Mahasabha<\/strong> (1934) and the All India Depressed Classes League<\/strong> (1935).<\/li>\n
    • Appeared before the Hammond Commission <\/strong>at Ranchi and demanded, for the first time, voting rights for the Dalits<\/strong> in 1935.<\/li>\n
    • Got arrested multiple times for his involvement <\/strong>in the Civil Disobedience <\/strong>Movement, Satyagraha <\/strong>and Quit India<\/strong> Movement.<\/li>\n
    • Due to his astute political acumen<\/strong>, he was dear to Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.<\/li>\n
    • He was a member of the Constituent Assembly <\/strong>and the first Cabinet<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • He worked to attain equality for untouchables, contributed to Green Revolution<\/strong> and organised rural labour movement in Bihar.<\/li>\n
    • He holds a world record of being a parliamentarian<\/strong> for 50 years<\/strong> between 1936 and 1986.<\/li>\n
    • Defence Minister <\/strong>of India during the India-Pakistan war,1971<\/strong> and also the Deputy Prime Minister<\/strong> of the country between 1977 and 1979<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
    • Extremely proficient in Sanskrit <\/strong>and was invited to join Banaras Hindu University<\/strong> by the founder Madan Mohan Malviya.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

\u201cSankalp se Siddhi\u201d – Village & Digital Connect Drive<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • TRIFED under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs<\/strong> has launched \u201cSankalp Se Siddhi\u201d – Village and Digital Connect Drive.<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • It is a 100-day drive<\/strong> which was started on the 1st of this month.<\/li>\n
  • Aims:\u00a0 <\/strong>To activate the Van Dhan Vikas Kendras<\/strong> in the villages.\n
      \n
    • The visiting teams will also identify locations and shortlist potential Van<\/strong> Dhan Vikas Kendras<\/strong> for clustering as TRIFOOD, <\/strong>and Scheme of Fund for Regeneration<\/strong> of Traditional Industries- SFURTI units as larger enterprises. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Significance: <\/strong>Aid in effecting a complete transformation of the tribal ecosystem across the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        TRIFOOD <\/strong><\/p>\n

        • It is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Food Processing Industry, Ministry of Tribal Affairs and TRIFED<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
        • It aims to enhance the income<\/strong> of tribals through better utilization<\/strong> of and value addition to the Minor Forest Produce<\/strong> collected by the tribal forest gatherers.<\/strong>\n
            \n
          • They will also identify tribal artisans<\/strong> and other groups and empanel <\/strong>them as suppliers<\/strong> so that they can have access to larger markets through the Tribes India <\/strong>network – both physical outlets<\/strong> and TribesIndia.com.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Stand-Up India Scheme<\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • The Stand Up India scheme was launched by the government to promote entrepreneurship<\/strong> among women,<\/strong> Scheduled Castes (SC) & Scheduled Tribes (ST)<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • The scheme is anchored by the Department of Financial Services (DFS)<\/strong>, Ministry of Finance<\/strong>.<\/li>\n
  • It facilitates bank loans<\/strong> between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 1 Crore<\/strong> to at least one Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST) <\/strong>borrower and at least one woman borrowe<\/strong>r per bank branch for setting up a greenfield enterprise.\n
      \n
    • This enterprise may be in manufacturing, services<\/strong> or the trading sector.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • In the case of non-individual enterprises, at least 51%<\/strong> of the shareholding and controlling<\/strong> stake should be held by either an SC\/ST or a woman entrepreneur.<\/strong><\/li>\n
    • Loans under the scheme are available for only Greenfield projects.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Banks have sanctioned more than ?25,000 crore to over 1.14 lakh accounts in the past five years since inception of\u00a0 Stand Up India scheme.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n
