{"id":14620,"date":"2021-04-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/01-04-2021\/wefs-global-gender-gap-report\/"},"modified":"2021-04-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-04-01T00:00:00","slug":"wefs-global-gender-gap-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/01-04-2021\/wefs-global-gender-gap-report","title":{"rendered":"WEF\u2019s Global Gender Gap Report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the World Economic Forum released the <strong>Global Gender Gap Report 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Findings of the report <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Globally<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\n<ul>\n<li>The countries with the largest gender gaps in <strong>economic participation<\/strong> include <strong>Iran, India, Pakistan, Syria, Yemen, Iraq, and Afghanistan.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The <strong>gender gap<\/strong> in <strong>political empowerment <\/strong>remains the largest: women represent only 26.1 percent of some 35,500 parliament seats and just 22.6 percent of over 3,400 ministers worldwide.<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh is \u201cthe only country where more women have held head-of-state positions than men in the past 50 years,\u201d<\/li>\n<li>South Asia incidentally is one of the <strong>worst-performing regions<\/strong>, followed only by the<strong> Middle East and northern Africa.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>China and India together account for about 90 to 95 per cent of the estimated 1.2 to 1.5 million missing female births annually worldwide due to gender-biased prenatal sex-selective practices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Indian Scenario <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India has declined on the <strong>political empowerment index<\/strong> as well by <strong>13.5 percentage <\/strong>points, and a decline in the number of<strong> women ministers, from 23.1 per cent in 2019 to 9.1 per cent in 2021.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India has closed 62.5 percent of its gender gap to date.<\/li>\n<li>It has still performed relatively well compared to other countries,<strong> ranking at 51<\/strong> in <strong>women\u2019s participation in politics.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In the index of <strong>education attainment,<\/strong> India has been ranked at <strong>114<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The two indices where India has fared the worst are <strong>\u201cHealth and Survival<\/strong>\u201d, which includes the <strong>sex ratio, and economic participation of women.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India has fared the worst, ranking at 155 \u2014 the only country to have fared worse is China.<\/li>\n<li>The report points to a skewed sex ratio as a major factor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The economic participation gender gap actually widened in India by 3 per cent this year.<\/li>\n<li>The estimated <strong>earned income of women<\/strong> in India is only <strong>one-fifth of men\u2019s<\/strong>, which puts the country among the bottom <strong>10 globally on this indicator.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>World Economic Forum<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the International Organization for <strong>Public-Private Cooperation<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Forum engages the <strong>foremost political, business, cultural and other leaders<\/strong> of society to <strong>shape global, regional and industry agendas.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It was established in <strong>1971 as a not-for-profit foundation<\/strong> and is headquartered in <strong>Geneva, Switzerland.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is independent, impartial and not tied to any special interests.<\/li>\n<li>The report aims to serve \u201cas a compass to track progress on relative gaps between women and men on health, education, economy and politics\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/ranked-140-of-156-countries-india-slips-28-spots-in-wefs-global-gender-gap-report-7253575\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source :IE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News Recently, the World Economic Forum released the Global Gender Gap Report 2021.
