{"id":14454,"date":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/19-03-2021\/india-finland-virtual-summit\/"},"modified":"2024-06-07T18:50:54","modified_gmt":"2024-06-07T13:20:54","slug":"india-finland-virtual-summit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-03-2021\/india-finland-virtual-summit","title":{"rendered":"India-Finland Virtual Summit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the <strong>Prime Ministers of India and the Republic of Finland<\/strong> have held a <strong>virtual summit<\/strong>, discussing the bilateral issues as well as other regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Highlights of the Summit<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both countries underlined the warm and friendly ties of their diplomatic relations based on shared principles and values of democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Covid-19 Pandemic<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Emphasized the need for <strong>scaling up manufacturing of Covid-19 vaccines<\/strong> and <strong>promoting equitable access<\/strong> to all countries.<\/li>\n<li>India has provided 59 million doses to more than 70 counties including through <strong>COVAX Initiative<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finland <\/strong>also is a firm supporter of<strong> vaccine solidarity<\/strong>, particularly through COVAX and has also<strong> invested in the R&amp;D<\/strong> of new technologies for Covid-19 vaccines.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital Partnership<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The digital domain is one of the <strong>most promising sectors for an intensive partnership<\/strong> so the emphasis would be on three key future domains,\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Future Information and Communications Technology<\/strong> (ICT), focusing on quantum technologies and computing.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future mobile technologies<\/strong>, focusing on 6G research and development.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Future education<\/strong>, focusing on the digital transformation of teaching and learning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Essential and cross-cutting elements of all these key domains are the <strong>utilisation of artificial intelligence<\/strong> (AI), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current-affairs\/02-03-2021\/245\"><strong>cybersecurity<\/strong><\/a> and <strong>blockchain technologies<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India is one of the main target countries of Finland\u2019s <strong>Talent Boost programme<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Endorsed the <strong>Joint Commission<\/strong> and the <strong>India-Finland Science and Technology Committee<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Polar Issues<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both nations are consultative members of the<strong> Antarctic Treaty<\/strong> and have <strong>active stations in Antarctica<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>India as an active observer in the Arctic Council <\/strong>has been welcomed to join and concretely contribute to enhanced cooperation on polar issues.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>African Perspective<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both parties acknowledge the <strong>growing importance of Africa <\/strong>and look forward to enhancing cooperation in and with Africa.<\/li>\n<li>Later in <strong>2021<\/strong>, <strong>bilateral talks on Africa<\/strong> will offer an opportunity for more discussion on matters of mutual interest and possible further action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>European Union (EU)-India<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both stressed the importance of continuing the implementation of results from the <strong>15th India-EU Summit <\/strong>(July 2020).<\/li>\n<li>Welcomed the upcoming<strong> 16th India-EU Summit<\/strong> (May 2021), which will be a new<strong> milestone for India-EU Strategic Partnership<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>EU-India High-Level Dialogue on Trade and Investment<\/strong>, launched in February 2021, is an important tool.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Environment<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both countries are committed to enhancing the implementation of <strong>Sustainable Development Goal<\/strong> <strong>(SDG) 6<\/strong>: &#8220;Clean Water and Sanitation for All&#8221; and <strong>SDG 13<\/strong>: \u201cClimate Action\u201d.\n<ul>\n<li>This includes efforts to develop <strong>Global Water and Climate Observation Systems <\/strong>to inform climate-resilient long-term water policy planning and implementation and efforts to promote technology and R&amp;D cooperation to solve water-related challenges.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India appreciated Finland&#8217;s leading role in clean and green technologies<\/strong>, and noted the potential for Finnish companies to partner India&#8217;s drive towards sustainable development.\n<ul>\n<li>India<strong> looks forward to enhanced cooperation in areas like renewable and bio-energy<\/strong>, <strong>sustainability<\/strong>, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate Relevant Initiatives<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Finland welcomed the universalisation of membership in the<strong> International Solar Alliance<\/strong> (ISA).<\/li>\n<li>Prime Minister Marin emphasized the EU\u2019s announced intention to join the <strong>Coalition on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure<\/strong> (CDRI).<\/li>\n<li>India appreciated the <strong>important role of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action<\/strong> (a Finland-Chile initiative).<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>MoU on Cooperation in the field of Geology and Mineral resources<\/strong> was a step towards diversification of our relationship.\n<ul>\n<li>It was signed in December 2020 between the Geological Survey of India and the Geological Survey of Finland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Both agreed on the need to ensure that the <strong>2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference COP26<\/strong> and <strong>Biodiversity Conference COP15 <\/strong>will produce positive outcomes.<\/li>\n<li>India and Finland will <strong>cooperate closely on fulfilling their ambitious national targets<\/strong> on climate under the <strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cultural Connections<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both stressed the<strong> importance of people-to-people contacts in all fields<\/strong>, especially in the areas of <strong>culture, education and tourism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This could be facilitated by the<strong> resumption of direct flights<\/strong> between India and Finland.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Multilateral Cooperation<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Both reaffirmed their commitment to a rules-based international order and through the <strong>United Nations (UN) reforms<\/strong>, they can achieve <strong>more effective multilateralism<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In this regard,<strong> both continue to support constructive efforts during the 75th Session of UNGA <\/strong>to<strong> reform the UN Security Council<\/strong> which needs to become more transparent, more effective, and more representative.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finland supports the permanent membership of India in a reformed and expanded UNSC<\/strong>, and reminds of the <strong>candidacy of Finland for a non-permanent member of the UNSC<\/strong> for the term <strong>2029-2030<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finland thanked India<\/strong> for its commitment to <strong>support the elections to the UN Human Rights Council in 2021<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Both countries<strong> reaffirmed their support to<\/strong> an open, inclusive and rules-based multilateral trading system under the<strong> World Trade Organisation<\/strong> (WTO).<\/li>\n<li>They underlined the importance of <strong>promoting post-Covid-19 economic recovery via the WTO<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table style=\"width: 624px;\" border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color: #fff2cc; width: 468.0pt;\"><strong>Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a <strong>Nordic country<\/strong> and is also called \u201c<strong>the land of a thousand lakes<\/strong>\u201d as inland lakes and rivers make up 10% of the country.\n<ul>\n<li>The Nordic region consists of <strong>Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland<\/strong>, and <strong>Iceland<\/strong>, as well as the <strong>Faroe Islands<\/strong>, <strong>Greenland<\/strong>, and <strong>\u00c5land<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Borders<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In the north, Finland has land borders with Norway and Sweden, and the three nations\u2019 borders all meet at Treriksr\u00f6set (The Three-Country Cairn).<\/li>\n<li>Finland also has a land border with Russia and sea borders with Estonia and \u00c5land.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Finland is a <strong>member of the EU<\/strong> and <strong>not a member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation<\/strong> (NATO).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Significance of Nordic Countries for India<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Relationship with the Nordic states is an <strong>important part of rapidly evolving Indian foreign policy priorities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>changing global context<\/strong>, in which states like China and Russia are remoulding the rules of global governance to their advantage, a strong partnership between Nordic nations with India is desirable as well as an <strong>imperative of changing global realities<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>first India-Nordic summit<\/strong>, held in <strong>April 2018<\/strong>, reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to work towards supporting free trade as a catalyst for achieving inclusive growth and realising the SDGs.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Issues<\/strong> such as trade, growth, global security, smart cities, renewable energy, and climate change are on the<strong> agenda of India\u2019s broader engagement<\/strong> with the Nordic countries.<\/li>\n<li>Nordic nations have been strong <strong>supporters of India\u2019s \u201cMake in India\u201d campaign<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India received <strong>support <\/strong>from the Nordic countries for <strong>its membership of the Nuclear Suppliers\u2019 Group<\/strong> (NSG) and a <strong>seat at the UNSC <\/strong>as a<strong> permanent member<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The NSG support from the Nordic states is particularly significant because there was a time when these<strong> states had adopted a strong moralistic approach to India\u2019s nuclear programme<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>There is huge potential for India to learn from Nordic nations, which rank the <strong>highest along with various human developments indices<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>India can benefit from the <strong>Nordic approach to innovation systems<\/strong>, characterised by a strong collaboration between the public sector, private sector and academia and<strong> synergies need to be identified with India\u2019s rich pool of talent and skills<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nordic solutions<\/strong> in clean technologies, maritime solutions, port modernisation, food processing, health, life-sciences and agriculture are also something from which <strong>India can benefit and learn<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>unique strengths of India and the Nordic countries<\/strong> offer immense opportunities for trade and investment diversification and<strong> mutually beneficial collaborations<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"height: 479px;
