{"id":14452,"date":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/19-03-2021\/international-conference-on-disaster-resilient-infrastructure-2\/"},"modified":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T00:00:00","slug":"international-conference-on-disaster-resilient-infrastructure-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-03-2021\/international-conference-on-disaster-resilient-infrastructure-2","title":{"rendered":"International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News: <\/strong>The<strong> <\/strong>Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is hosting the International Conference on<strong> Disaster Resilient Infrastructure &#8211; ICDRI 2021<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The EU has also recently joined India-led Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Highlights of the Speech<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Once-in-a-hundred-year disaster:<\/strong> COVID-19 pandemic in an interdependent and interconnected world has spared no country (rich or poor, east or west, north or south).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Innovations:<\/strong> Innovations to address global challenges can come from anywhere.\n<ul>\n<li>Hence there is a need for fostering a global ecosystem that supports innovation in all parts of the world.<\/li>\n<li>The year 2021 promises to be a year of swift recovery from the pandemic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate change is another global pandemic: <\/strong>It will take sustained and concerted efforts to mitigate climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Need for Climate Resilient Infrastructure:<\/strong> Countries that are making large investments in infrastructure, eg India, must invest in resilience, and not in risk.\n<ul>\n<li>Many infrastructure systems- digital infrastructure, shipping lines, aviation networks- cover the entire world and the effect of disaster in one part of the world can quickly spread across the world.<\/li>\n<li>Cooperation is a must for ensuring the resilience of the global system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>High Expectations from COP-26:<\/strong> The world is at the midpoint of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris agreement, and the Sendai Framework.\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>COP-26 will be hosted by the UK and Italy<\/strong> later this year (2021).<\/li>\n<li>This partnership on resilient infrastructure must play an important role in helping meet some of those expectations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Few Key Priority Areas:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Concerns of the <strong>most vulnerable nations and communities<\/strong> should be placed first by CDRI to fulfil the central promise of the SDGs, i.e, \u201c<strong>Leave no one behind<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Resiliency in <strong>Health infrastructure and the Digital infrastructure<\/strong> should be ensured after detailed analysis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resiliency in all the Technology:<\/strong> The quest for resilience should not differentiate between technologies as too basic or too advanced.\n<ul>\n<li>The CDRI must maximize the demonstration effect of the application of technology.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mass Movement:<\/strong> The notion of <strong>\u201cresilient infrastructure\u201d<\/strong> must become a mass movement galvanizing the energies of everyone including experts, and formal institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fce5cd; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India led an International coalition<\/strong> of countries, UN agencies, multilateral development banks, the private sector, and academic institutions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> To promote disaster-resilient infrastructure.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Headquarters:<\/strong> New Delhi, India (Interim Secretariat)<\/li>\n<li>India officially launched the CDRI at the 2019 UN Climate Action Summit in New York on 23 September 2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Founders:<\/strong> India,\u00a0 Australia, Bhutan, Fiji, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Maldives, Mexico, Mongolia, Rwanda, Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom. (<strong>13 countries<\/strong>).\n<ul>\n<li>The World Bank and the Green Climate Fund also supported the launch.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>As of January 2021, the CDRI comprises <strong>20 member countries<\/strong> and <strong>4 &#8220;knowledge and development partners<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diplomatic Significance:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>CDRI is the<strong> second major coalition launched by India <\/strong>outside of the UN,<strong> the first being the International Solar Alliance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Indian attempt to obtain a <strong>global leadership role<\/strong> in climate change matters\n<ul>\n<li>It was termed as part of India&#8217;s stronger branding by India&#8217;s Minister of External Affairs at the fourth Ramnath Goenka Lecture in 2019.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Alternative to Chinese BRI:<\/strong> India and Japan, with their joint experience in disaster management, can use the CDRI to provide a safer alternative to China&#8217;s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).\n<ul>\n<li>However, BRI is an infrastructure creation and funding initiative whereas the CDRI is an international knowledge platform.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindubusinessline.com\/news\/national\/world-must-come-together-to-build-strong-infra\/article34093635.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Business Line<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News: The Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) is hosting the International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure &#8211; ICDRI 2021.
