He popularized the <strong>classical dances<\/strong> in the Kerala state.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guru Chemancheri Kunhiraman Nair<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Background:<\/strong> Born to Chadayankandy Chathukutty Nair and Kinattinkara Kunhamnakutty Amma on June 16, 1916.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contribution:<\/strong> He studied at<strong> Kalladikkodan school of Kathakali<\/strong> and was specialised in \u201cKalladikodan\u201d style.\n<ul>\n<li>Kalladikodan style gives equal importance to the three aspects of<strong> nritta<\/strong> (the dance movements in their basic form), <strong>nritya<\/strong> (expressional component i.e. mudras or gestures) and <strong>natya<\/strong> (the dramatic element of the dance i.e. the imitation of characters).<\/li>\n<li>He had his debut performance at Keezhpayur Kuniyil Paradevatha temple in 1930.<\/li>\n<li>In 1945, he established his institution<strong> Bharateeya Natya Kalalayam<\/strong> at Kannur where he has imparted training in dance.<\/li>\n<li>From 1947, he served as Principal of the Bharatheeya Natya Kalalayam at Tellicherry, and from 1973 of the Pokkad Kalalayam at Tellicherry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Awards:<\/strong> Honoured with the <strong>Padma Shree in 2017<\/strong> in recognition of his glorious contribution to the art form.\n<ul>\n<li>Apart from\u00a0 Padma Shree, he has received various honours for his work including the <strong>Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award (1979)<\/strong> and the Fellowship of the Academy (1999); the Kerala Kalamandalam Visishta Kala Seva Award (2002); and the Kalaratnam Award of Kerala Kalamandalam (2009).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/83706960827397460_image.png\" style=\"height:200px; margin-left:80px; margin-right:80px; width:384px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Kathakali <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The word <strong>Kathakali literally means &#8220;Story-Play&#8221;<\/strong>.
