{"id":14372,"date":"2021-03-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/15-03-2021\/the-uks-turing-scheme\/"},"modified":"2021-03-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T00:00:00","slug":"the-uks-turing-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/15-03-2021\/the-uks-turing-scheme","title":{"rendered":"The UK\u2019s Turing Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The UK launched the <strong>Turing schem<\/strong>e to enable UK students to study abroad after leaving the European Union\u2019s flagship <strong>Erasmus scholarship programme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About Turing Scheme<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is named after the celebrated <strong>English mathematician and codebreaker Alan Turing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme will <strong>enable schools, colleges<\/strong> and <strong>universities in the UK <\/strong>to <strong>apply for government funding.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The scheme, for which the British government has <strong>allocated 110 million pounds<\/strong> for the first year, starts in <strong>2021\/22<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It allows students<\/strong> to <strong>study and work across the globe,<\/strong> including in <strong>India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The scheme would be a<strong> global programme<\/strong> in which<strong> every country <\/strong>in the world will be able to <strong>partner with UK institutions. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This is in contrast with the <strong>Erasmus+ programme<\/strong>, which only included European countries.<\/li>\n<li>The scheme is part of the UK\u2019s drive to <strong>increase the amount generated <\/strong>from <strong>education exports, including fees<\/strong> and <strong>income from overseas students<\/strong> and<strong> English language teaching abroad. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The government aims to generate 35 billion pounds per year and bring 6 lakh, international students, <strong>to the country by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Aims &#038; Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The scheme is aimed towards ensuring <strong>social mobility and targets students<\/strong> from <strong>disadvantaged backgrounds<\/strong> and <strong>areas from where not many <\/strong>could benefit under the <strong>previous Erasmus+ scheme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Beneficiaries of the scheme from disadvantaged backgrounds can receive up to<strong> 490 pounds per month towards living costs<\/strong>, as well as <strong>travel funding and money<\/strong> to offset the<strong> cost of passports, visas and insurance.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These projects offer unique,?career-building opportunities. They?give?participants the hard and soft skills sought by employers, and bridge the gap between education and work.?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How is it different from Erasmus?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Turing scheme will provide<strong> placements across the world.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Erasmus covers placements across the<strong> EU and some non-EU countries<\/strong> that pay to be part of the scheme.<\/li>\n<li>Both schemes are <strong>open not only to university students <\/strong>but also to<strong> those in vocational training, apprentices <\/strong>or those who are <strong>retraining through a college or school.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Erasmus offers placements for <strong>teaching and college staff <\/strong>and youth workers as well, but the <strong>Turing scheme will not.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Implications on India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India is already a top source of <strong>international students to the UK<\/strong> and <strong>could be among the leading list <\/strong>of countries with which <strong>UK universities want to improve student exchange projects<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It will open up more <strong>opportunities for international and Indian students<\/strong> to gain valuable international experience.<\/li>\n<li>It will provide opportunities especially for students with <strong>disadvantaged backgrounds<\/strong> who were less likely to benefit from the<strong> previous EU scheme.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-what-is-the-uks-turing-scheme-and-how-will-it-affect-indian-universities-7228135\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source : IE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News The UK launched the Turing scheme to enable UK students to study abroad after leaving the European Union\u2019s flagship Erasmus scholarship programme.
