{"id":14338,"date":"2021-03-12T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-12T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/12-03-2021\/india-japan-space-cooperation\/"},"modified":"2021-03-12T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T00:00:00","slug":"india-japan-space-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/12-03-2021\/india-japan-space-cooperation","title":{"rendered":"India-Japan Space Cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Indian and Japanese <\/strong>space agencies <strong>reviewed cooperation <\/strong>in <strong>earth observation, lunar cooperation and satellite navigation.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Points <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They also agreed to <strong>explore opportunities<\/strong> for<strong> cooperation in \u201cspace situational awareness <\/strong>and <strong>professional exchange programme<\/strong>\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Both agencies signed an <strong>Implementing Arrangement for collaborative activities<\/strong> on <strong>rice crop area and air quality monitoring <\/strong>using<strong> satellite data.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India and Japan are already working on a<strong> joint lunar polar exploration (LUPEX) mission<\/strong> that aims to <strong>send a lander and rover to the Moon\u2019s south pole around 2024<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Joint lunar polar exploration (LUPEX)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Lupex mission is being planned to <strong>demonstrate new surface exploration<\/strong> technologies related to <strong>vehicular transport and lunar night survival<\/strong> for<strong> sustainable lunar exploration i<\/strong>n <strong>the polar regions \u2014 the south pole of the Moon in this case<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The mission will use a<strong> lunar features-matching algorithm <\/strong>along with <strong>navigational equipment <\/strong>from <strong>JAXA\u2019s Smart Lander for Investigating the Moon mission<\/strong>, and the rover will carry instruments from both the space agencies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>The lander\u2019s payload capacity will be a <strong>minimum of 350 kg<\/strong>, while the rover will carry <strong>multiple instruments,<\/strong> which include a <strong>drill to collect sub-surface samples <\/strong>from 1.5 mt depth.<\/li>\n<li>The launcher and rover are to be developed by Japan and the lander system will be developed by India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Objectives<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The mission is also meant to <strong>obtain data <\/strong>on the<strong> quantity and forms <\/strong>of the <strong>water resources present on the Moon.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It aims to <strong>improve the technology needed <\/strong>to explore the <strong>surface of low-gravity celestial bodies<\/strong> in order to <strong>support future lunar activities.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>These advancements include <strong>technology for mobility, lunar night survival and mining<\/strong> excavation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:735px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>India-Japan Bilateral Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Beginning <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Relations between <strong>Japan and India<\/strong> is said to have begun in the<strong> 6th century when Buddhism was introduced to Japan<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Indian culture, filtered through Buddhism, has had a great impact on Japanese culture, and this is the source of the <strong>Japanese people&#8217;s sense of closeness to India.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Diplomatic <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1952.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s rapidly growing economy and the new economic opportunities created have caught the attention of the Japanese corporate sector, which is a driving force behind closer bilateral relations.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Economic and Commercial <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In recent years, the economic relationship between Japan and India have steadily expanded and deepened.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Japan&#8217;s interest in India is increasing due to a variety of reasons including India&#8217;s large and <strong>growing market and its resources, especially human resources.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0The bilateral trade between India and Japan for FY 2019-20 (April \u2013 December) totalled US$ 11.87 billion.\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s exports from Japan amounted to <strong>US$ 3.94 billion while India\u2019s import from Japan amounted to US$ 7.93 billion. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s primary exports to Japan have been<strong> petroleum products, chemicals,<\/strong> <strong>elements, compounds, non-metallic mineral ware, fish &#038; fish preparations, metalliferous ores &#038; scrap, clothing &#038; accessories, iron &#038; steel products, textile yarn, fabrics and machinery etc. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s primary imports from Japan are machinery, <strong>electrical machinery<\/strong>,<strong> iron <\/strong>and <strong>steel products, plastic materials, non-ferrous metals<\/strong>, parts of motor vehicles, organic chemicals, manufactures of metals, etc<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Strategic <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Japan continues to cooperate in supporting strategic connectivity linking South Asia to Southeast Asia through the synergy between &#8216;<strong>&#8216;Act East&#8221; policy and &#8221;Partnership for Quality Infrastructure.&#8221;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Quad grouping-<\/strong>In November 2017, India, the US, Australia and Japan gave shape to the long-pending \u201cQuad\u201d Coalition to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence especially due to the rising dominance of China in the region.<\/li>\n<li>Both the countries relations have strengthened due to<strong> growing convergence<\/strong> on strategic matters and its significance is growing from the common outlook on issues of peace, security and s<strong>tability of the Indo-Pacific Region<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Defence <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India-Japan Defense and Security partnership has evolved over the years.<\/li>\n<li>There are various frameworks of security and defence dialogue between Japan and India including the \u201c2+2\u201d meeting, annual Defense Ministerial Dialogue and Coast Guard-to-Coast Guard dialogue.<\/li>\n<li>The Armies and Air Forces of India and Japan held their first bilateral exercises, \u2018Dharma Guardian\u2019 and \u2018Shinyuu Maitri\u2019, in 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Additionally, Japan participates in the annual India-US Malabar naval exercises on a regular basis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/india-japan-space-agencies-review-cooperation\/article34046820.ece\/amp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source: TH<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News Indian and Japanese space agencies reviewed cooperation in earth observation, lunar cooperation and satellite navigation.
