{"id":14270,"date":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/08-03-2021\/maitri-setu-bridge\/"},"modified":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T00:00:00","slug":"maitri-setu-bridge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/08-03-2021\/maitri-setu-bridge","title":{"rendered":"Maitri Setu Bridge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News: <\/strong>The Prime Minister will inaugurate <strong>\u2018Maitri Setu\u2019 between India and Bangladesh <\/strong>on 9th March 2021.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He will also inaugurate and lay the foundation stone of<strong> multiple infrastructure <\/strong>projects in <strong>Tripura.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About \u2018Maitri Setu\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The bridge \u2018Maitri Setu\u2019 has been built over the <strong>Feni river<\/strong> which flows between the <strong>Indian boundary in Tripura State and Bangladesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The name \u2018<strong>Maitri Setu\u2019 symbolizes<\/strong> growing<strong> bilateral relations<\/strong> and <strong>friendly ties between India and Bangladesh. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The construction was taken up by the <strong>National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd<\/strong> at a <strong>project cost of Rs. 133 Crores. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The 1.9 Km long bridge joins Sabroom in<strong> India with Ramgarh in Bangladesh<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will give a boost to <strong>trade and people to people m<\/strong>ovement between <strong>India and Bangladesh. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>With this inauguration, Tripura is set to become the \u2018<strong>Gateway of North East<\/strong>\u2019 with <strong>access to Chittagong Port of Bangladesh<\/strong>, which is just <strong>80 kms from Sabroom.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Inauguration of other Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An Integrated Check Post at Sabroom <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The project is being taken up by the Land Ports Authority of India at an estimated cost of about Rs. 232 Crores.<\/li>\n<li>It will help ease the <strong>movement of goods and passengers <\/strong>between the two countries, provide new market <strong>opportunities for products of North-East<\/strong> states and assist the seamless movement of passengers to and from India and Bangladesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>NH 208<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The 80 Km NH 208 project has been taken up by the <strong>National Highways &#038; Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited <\/strong>with a project cost of Rs. 1078 Crores.<\/li>\n<li>It will connect the <strong>Unakoti district headquarters at Kailashahar<\/strong> with the Khowai district headquarters.<\/li>\n<li>It will provide an <strong>alternative route to the NH 44. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>State Highways and other district roads<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>They will be <\/strong>developed by the State government with a financial<strong> outlay of Rs. 63.75 Crores<\/strong>. They will provide all-weather connectivity to the people of Tripura.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>40978 houses constructed under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban)-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>They are completed with the financial outlay of Rs. 813 Crores.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Integrated Command and Control Centre built under Agartala Smart City Mission.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Multi Level Car Parking and Commercial Complex <\/strong>at Old Motor Stand\n<ul>\n<li>It will be developed at an investment of about Rs 200 crore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0Connectivity Projects between India-Bangladesh <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both countries have realised that c<strong>onnectivity is the key to their prosperity<\/strong>. For India, Bangladesh is crucial to<strong> enhance its reach towards its north-eastern states<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>At the same time, Bangladesh needs to have a <strong>conducive relationship with the largest of its two neighbours (the other one being Myanmar). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Therefore, both countries have opened previously closed links and have worked on identifying new ones.<\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh has also expressed interest in joining the <strong>India-Myanmar-Thailand trilateral highway project.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Train links<\/strong>: Railways is a <strong>fast and cheap mode of transport,<\/strong> compared to<strong> inland shipping and roadways respectively<\/strong>. Therefore, it is important to invest in the <strong>improvement of rail connectivity,<\/strong> in order to achieve better trade connectivity and synergy between commerce in the two countries.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Apart from <strong>Chilahati-Haldibari, <\/strong>other rail links between <strong>India and Bangladesh<\/strong> are <strong>Petrapole (India) to Benapole (Bangladesh), Gede (India) to Darshana (Bangladesh), Singhabad (India) to Rohanpur (Bangladesh) and Radhikapur (India) to Birol (Bangladesh).<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Indo-Bangla railway connectivity project through Akhaura (Bangladesh)<\/strong> \u2013 Agartala (Tripura) would be completed by this March.\n<ul>\n<li>The 13 kilometres-long railway project would <strong>connect Bangladesh with India\u2019s northeast and West Bengal <\/strong>through <strong>Nischintapur <\/strong>along the <strong>Indo-Bangla border<\/strong> to serve the purpose of trade and economic relations between the two countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bus links<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> Roadways are important for<strong> faster connectivity and larger availability<\/strong> of choices for origins and destinations.\n<ul>\n<li>The recently started bus services \u2014<strong> Kolkata-Dhaka-Agartala and Dhaka-Shillong-Guwahati \u2014 will link West Bengal to three North-Eastern states of India via Bangladesh capital Dhaka.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chittagong Port<\/strong>-Bangladesh has made the <strong>Chittagong port available to India<\/strong> for transporting goods to the north-eastern states of India.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0This will be a huge factor in the economic progress of the Indian territory of the north-east, by slashing both time and distance required to transport goods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>About Feni River-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Feni River, which forms part of the <strong>India-Bangladesh border<\/strong>, originates in the <strong>South Tripura district.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It <\/strong>passes through <strong>Sabroom town on the Indian side<\/strong>, and <strong>meets the Bay of Bengal <\/strong>after it<strong> flows into Bangladesh. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>North East Region<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/576160487505210560_image.png\" style=\"height:300px; margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px; width:300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The North Eastern Region is ideal for both <strong>passive and adventure <\/strong>forms of <strong>Ecotourism with wildlife sanctuary\/parks, good scenic beauty, waterfalls, forests<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<li>The region has <strong>many famous and old religious spots<\/strong>, which have been integrated with <strong>national tourism circuits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In view of the attractive <strong>natural environment and growing trends<\/strong> of outbound business meets, the<strong> NER also offers ample opportunities for the business<\/strong> tourism <strong>segment.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Heritage tourism has picked up considerably in the Region with a participatory approach.<\/li>\n<li>The North East will play an important role in India\u2019s Act East Policy.<\/li>\n<li>The region is home to a large number of ethnic communities and diverse tribal groups having unique dialects and traditions.<\/li>\n<li>Northeast states are increasingly gaining a <strong>significant strategic value<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>With ASEAN engagement becoming a central <strong>pillar of India\u2019s foreign policy direction, these states play an important role<\/strong> as the <strong>physical bridge between India and Southeast Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Seven Sisters of Northeast India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018seven sisters\u2019 of Northeast India comprise Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.<\/li>\n<li>Sikkim is also a part of the Northeast but is not included in the Seven Sisters because while the other seven states are contiguous, Sikkim is sort of a neighbour, divided by the Siliguri Corridor.<\/li>\n<li>Sikkim is also referred to as the \u2018Brother\u2019 of the Seven Sisters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is the Siliguri Corridor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s North East<\/strong> is <strong>geographically isolated<\/strong> from the rest of India and is connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land called the <strong>Siliguri Corridor also known as Chicken\u2019s Neck.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0It is about 200 km long and 60 km wide.
