{"id":14250,"date":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/06-03-2021\/india-bangladesh-strategic-partnership\/"},"modified":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","slug":"india-bangladesh-strategic-partnership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/06-03-2021\/india-bangladesh-strategic-partnership","title":{"rendered":"India-Bangladesh Strategic Partnership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News &#8211;<\/strong>External Affairs Minister made a strong outreach to Bangladesh\u00a0 on his bilateral visit.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The visits have been timed with celebrations to mark <strong>50 years of the 1971 liberation war <\/strong>that led to the <strong>birth of Bangladesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Points<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Both the countries are working so hard to <strong>expand relationships <\/strong>in all <strong>dimensions, ranging <\/strong>from <strong>security, trade, transport and connectivity, culture<\/strong>, <strong>people-to-people <\/strong>ties, energy, joint development of shared <strong>resources and defence.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>They acknowledged the<strong> collaborative initiative of the two countries<\/strong> in implementing the v<strong>accination programme against the ongoing pandemic<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0Bangladesh has purchased the Covid vaccine from Serum Institute of India, and the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is implementing the nationwide vaccination programme, f<strong>ree of cost, very efficiently and effectively.<\/strong>\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Indian and Bangladeshi foreign ministers discussed <strong>Japan as a third country for partnership on connectivity in the region.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Japan has been involved in a number of <strong>connectivity projects<\/strong> in India&#8217;s northeast.<\/li>\n<li>J<strong>apanese Official Development Assistance (ODA)<\/strong> stands at over Rs 1600 cr in India&#8217;s northeast with projects, many of them connectivity in seven states of the region. The projects include Guwahati sewerage projects, Sikkim major district roads projects.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Both sides reviewed the entire <strong>gamut of security and border-related cooperation<\/strong> and agreed to <strong>work closely to fulfil the shared vision <\/strong>of the l<strong>eadership of the two countries.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The significance of our ties with Bangladesh lies in its centrality for our \u2018<strong>Neighbourhood First&#8217; and its growing relevance for our &#8216;Act East&#8217; Policy.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>India-Bangladesh Relations<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>India was one of the first countries to recognize <strong>Bangladesh and establish diplomatic relations immediately after its independence in December 1971.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Both these nations are members of SAARC, BIMSTEC, Indian Ocean Coastal Regional Cooperation Association, and Commonwealth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Economic and Commercial: <\/strong>\u00a0Bangladesh is <strong>India\u2019s biggest trade partner in South Asia.<\/strong> Bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh has grown <strong>steadily over the last decade.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>India\u2019s exports to Bangladesh in F<strong>Y 2018-19 stood at US$ 9.21 bn<\/strong> and <strong>imports from Bangladesh during the same period were US$1.04 bn. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Cooperation in the power sector<\/strong> has become one of the hallmarks of India -Bangladesh relations. Bangladesh is currently importing 1<strong>160 MW of power from India. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Bangladesh is the <strong>biggest development partner of India<\/strong>. India has <strong>extended 3 Lines of Credits (LOC) to Bangladesh in the last 8 years amounting to US$ 8 billion<\/strong> for development of<strong> infrastructure in various sectors including roads,railways, shipping and ports.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Capacity Building and Human Resource Development: <\/strong>\u00a0Human resource development is a key component of India\u2019s development cooperation efforts in Bangladesh through its several ongoing <strong>training programs and Scholarships.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0The Government of India has been training 1<strong>800 Bangladesh Civil Service officials from 2019 at National Centre for Good Governance (NCGG),Mussoorie<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The I<strong>ndira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC<\/strong>) in Dhaka plays an important role in <strong>celebration of common cultural links between the two countries. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Its training programs including <strong>Yoga, Kathak, Manipuri dance, Hindi language, Hindustani classical music and the cultural programs<\/strong> of renowned artists of India and Bangladesh contribute in <strong>promotion of people to people contacts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Defense Cooperation: <\/strong>High level exchanges at the level of services chief of <strong>Indian Navy, Bangladesh Navy<\/strong> and <strong>Indian Air Force<\/strong>, conduct of <strong>second annual defense dialogue<\/strong> and <strong>inaugural tri-services staff talks, service specific talks of Navy and Air Force<\/strong> and the DG level talks between the Coast Guards have contributed to <strong>significant improvement in bilateral defense cooperation. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In the <strong>training domain<\/strong> both the countries have continued and enhanced mutual <strong>engagements<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Various Joint exercises of Army (Exercise Sampriti) and Navy (Exercise Milan) take place between the two countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Connectivity: <\/strong>Both the governments are undertaking various measures to restore the pre1965 rail links and other connectivity links that existed between India and Bangladesh.\n<ul>\n<li>To enhance people to people contacts, it has been decided to increase the frequency of two passenger trains, i.e., Maitree Express and Bandhan Express from 4 days a week to 5 days a week and from one day a week to two days a week respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Both the governments decided to commence Dhaka-Siliguri-Gangtok-Dhaka and DhakaSiliguri-Darjeeling-Dhaka bus service to enhance people to people contacts between both the countries and the trail run of Dhaka-Siliguri-Gangtok-Dhaka was also held in December 2019.<\/li>\n<li>Both countries jointly inaugurated the newly restored railway link between Haldibari (India) and Chilahati (Bangladesh).<\/li>\n<li>the Government of India has also been providing grant assistance to Bangladesh for various infrastructure projects including construction of Akhaura-Agartala rail link, dredging of inland waterways in Bangladesh and construction of India-Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/india\/delhi-reaches-out-to-dhaka-for-ties-beyond-strategic-partnership-7214715\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source :IE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News &#8211;External Affairs Minister made a strong outreach to Bangladesh\u00a0 on his bilateral visit.
