{"id":14248,"date":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/06-03-2021\/solid-fuel-ducted-ramjet-technology\/"},"modified":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","slug":"solid-fuel-ducted-ramjet-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/06-03-2021\/solid-fuel-ducted-ramjet-technology","title":{"rendered":"Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>In News: <\/strong>The <strong>DRDO <\/strong>successfully carried out a <strong>flight demonstration based on Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)<\/strong> <strong>technology <\/strong>from the <strong>Integrated Test Range (ITR)<\/strong> Chandipur off the coast of<strong> Odisha. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> air-to-air missiles<\/strong>, which use <strong>SFDR technology,<\/strong> can achieve <strong>longer ranges<\/strong> as they<strong> do not require oxidisers, among other reasons.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>DRDO began developing SFDR first in 2017 and had conducted successful tests i<strong>n 2018 and 2019 as well<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/602936932440383900_image.png\" style=\"height:259px; margin-left:150px; margin-right:150px; width:389px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a missile propulsion system developed by the<strong> Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is a missile <strong>propulsion system that comprises<\/strong> the thrust <strong>modulated ducted rocket along with the reduced smoke nozzle-less missile booster. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Thrust modulation of the system is achieved through a hot gas flow controller.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It uses a solid fuelled air-breathing ramjet engine.<\/li>\n<li>It was developed with the aim of <strong>developing the critical technologies<\/strong> which are required in the <strong>propulsion systems of future long-range air-to-air missiles of India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The SFDR technology will help DRDO with the technological advantage to develop long-range air-to-air missiles (AAMs).\n<ul>\n<li>At present, such technology is available only with a handful of countries in the world and India is one of them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>With this technology ,India can have fastest long-range missiles in two categories, <strong>providing full-fledged <\/strong>and <strong>multi-layered aerial protection from hostile attacks.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Ramjet <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a form of <strong>air-breathing jet engine<\/strong> that <strong>uses the engine\u2019s forward motion<\/strong> to <strong>compress incoming air without an axial compressor or a centrifugal compressor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0A ramjet-powered vehicle requires an <strong>assisted take-off like a rocket assist <\/strong>to accelerate it to a s<strong>peed where it begins to produce thrust.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ramjets work <strong>most efficiently at supersonic speeds<\/strong> around Mach 3 (three times the speed of sound) and <strong>can operate up to speeds of Mach 6.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>However, the <strong>ramjet efficiency starts<\/strong> to drop when the vehicle <strong>reaches hypersonic speeds.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Ramjet powered missiles provide <strong>greater range<\/strong> and a<strong> higher average speed <\/strong>compared to <strong>missiles powered by solid propellants.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>ramjet missiles can carry a bigger warhead as they do not have to carry an oxidizer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/379115074909041400_image.png\" style=\"height:155px; margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px; width:266px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Application<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ramjets can be particularly useful in applications requiring a small and simple mechanism for high-speed use, such as missiles.<\/li>\n<li>They have also been used successfully, though not efficiently, as tip jets on the end of helicopter rotors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Scramjet engine:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A scramjet (supersonic-combustion ramjet) is a ramjet engine in which the airflow through the <strong>engine remains supersonic,<\/strong> or greater than the speed of sound. Scramjet powered vehicles are envisioned to operate at speeds up to at least Mach 15.<\/li>\n<li>In the chamber, the air mixes with the fuel to ignite supersonic combustion but the cruiser\u2019s flight will be at a hypersonic speed of Mach six to seven.
