{"id":14246,"date":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/06-03-2021\/food-waste-index-report-2021\/"},"modified":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-06T00:00:00","slug":"food-waste-index-report-2021","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/06-03-2021\/food-waste-index-report-2021","title":{"rendered":"Food Waste Index Report 2021"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News: <\/strong>Recently, the <strong>United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)<\/strong> released the <strong>Food Waste Index Report 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The index was prepared by using data from <strong>54 countries and then extrapolated to the remaining countries. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Key Findings<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The report estimated that <strong>931 million tonnes of food<\/strong> were wasted in 2019.<\/li>\n<li>It has revealed that <strong>17% of all food available<\/strong> at the <strong>consumer level (11% in households,<\/strong> <strong>5% in foodservice and 2% in retail)<\/strong> was wasted in <strong>2019 and around 690 million people had to go hungry.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The FAO has produced a <strong>Food Loss Index <\/strong>which shows that around <strong>14% of the<\/strong> world&#8217;s f<strong>ood is lost from post-harvest up to, but excluding, the retail level.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Data on all three areas of f<strong>ood waste, namely household, foodservice and retail<\/strong> was available only for <strong>high-income countries. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>On average, <strong>74 kilograms of food was wasted per capita <\/strong>at the<strong> household level.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Some countries like<strong> Austria and South Africa produce very low amounts of waste<\/strong> at <strong>39 kg\/capita\/year and 40 kg \/capita\/year<\/strong> respectively.<\/li>\n<li>Countries like <strong>Nigeria and Rwanda <\/strong>are producing waste at <strong>189 kg \/capita\/year<\/strong> and 1<strong>64 kg\/capita\/year respectively.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Per capita, food wastage is, in fact, much higher in west <strong>Asian and sub-Saharan <\/strong>A<strong>frican countries compared to South Asian<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>However, this estimation is based on only <strong>three studies,<\/strong> all of which had a s<strong>ample size or length that was either small or unclear.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/484126070955362940_image.png\" style=\"height:290px; margin-left:150px; margin-right:150px; width:457px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Concerns<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Food waste also has a <strong>substantial environmental, social and economic impac<\/strong>t.<\/li>\n<li>An estimated <strong>8-10 percent<\/strong> of <strong>global greenhouse gas <\/strong>emissions are associated with f<strong>ood that is not consumed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suggestions<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Countries can raise<strong> climate ambition by including food waste<\/strong> in <strong>Nationally Determined Contributions<\/strong> to the <strong>Paris Agreement<\/strong>, while strengthening food <strong>security and cutting costs to households.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Significance of reducing food waste<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Reducing food waste would cut <strong>greenhouse gas emissions,<\/strong> slow the destruction of nature<strong> through land conversion and pollution<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It will enhance the availability <\/strong>of <strong>food and thus reduce hunger <\/strong>and <strong>save money at a time of global recession.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Food Waste Index<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The report, produced jointly by the <strong>United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and WRAP<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>It presents the most comprehensive food waste data collection, analysis and modelling to date, generating a new estimate of global food waste.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It seeks to support efforts to halve<strong> food waste by 2030.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It aims at supporting the goals of <strong>SDG 12.3.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>SDG target 12.3 aims at <strong>halving per-capita global food waste<\/strong> at the <strong>retail and consumer levels and reducing food losses<\/strong> along <strong>production and supply<\/strong> chains.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:735px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc;
