{"id":14206,"date":"2021-03-04T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-04T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/04-03-2021\/world-wildlife-day\/"},"modified":"2021-03-04T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-04T00:00:00","slug":"world-wildlife-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/04-03-2021\/world-wildlife-day","title":{"rendered":"World Wildlife Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News:<\/strong> World Wildlife Day 2021 is being celebrated on 3rd March with the theme \u2018<strong>Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet<\/strong>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The day was chosen as World Wildlife day by the <strong>UN General Assembly (UNGA)<\/strong> on 20 December 2013 at its <strong>68th session<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The aim was to <strong>celebrate and raise awareness about animals and plants<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>The reason this date was selected for the occasion was that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (<strong>CITES<\/strong>) was signed on 3 March, 1973.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance of The Day<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Spreads awareness about wildlife &#038; related crimes: <\/strong>Multiple leaders and stars tweet and common man discusses the wildlife, flora, fauna.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Celebrates symbiotic relationship between humans &#038; forests.:<\/strong> According to the UN, approximately 200-350 million people live within or adjacent to forested areas around the world.\n<ul>\n<li>Humans rely on multiple ecosystem services provided by forest and forest species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Increases discussions about ecosystem services:<\/strong>There are 4 types of Ecosystem Services viz <strong>Supporting services;<\/strong> <strong>Provisioning services; Regulating services; Cultural services.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/677424723167568900_image.png\" style=\"height:376px; margin-left:50px; margin-right:50px; width:471px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.earthwiseaware.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/Ecosystem-services.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EarthWiseAware<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pays tribute to Tribal culture:<\/strong> The indigenous people currently manage around 28 percent of the forest land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Promotes ecotourism: <\/strong>Various National Parks and their flora and fauna get the limelight and hence it helps people to realise the tourism potential.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>World Wildlife Day 2021 celebration<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Forest wildlife management models and practices<\/strong> were released by the UN.<\/li>\n<li>Forest based livelihood that can help in sustainable development, including traditional practices and knowledge were also promoted and publicised.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Community Engagement<\/strong> through different multilingual activities and posters\n<ul>\n<li>Interested people can also download the \u2018<strong>social media kit<\/strong>\u2019 for World Wildlife Day 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Steps Taken by India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Wildlife Protection Act 1972<\/strong>: Protected Areas like National Parks, Biodiversity Reserves, etc. were created\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Project Tiger:<\/strong> Initiated in 1972\n<ul>\n<li>It helped in the conservation of both tigers and the entire ecosystem.<\/li>\n<li>This project is sponsored by the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change.<\/li>\n<li>There are about 47 tiger reserves situated in more than 17 regions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tiger Task Force<\/strong> conducts assessments of the number of tigers, their habitat, hunting habits.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Success:<\/strong> Increase in the population of the tigers in the reserve areas.\n<ul>\n<li>From a scanty 268 in 9 reserves in 1972, tiger population rose to above 1000 in 28 reserves in 2006 and to 2000+ tigers in 2016.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project Elephant: <\/strong>Initiated in 1992 with the aim of conserving elephants and their habitat and of migratory routes by developing scientific and planned management measures. Following are also features of project:\n<ul>\n<li>Welfare of the domestic elephants.<\/li>\n<li>Mitigation of human-elephant conflict.<\/li>\n<li>Measures for protection of elephants against poachers and unnatural death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Crocodile Conservation Project: <\/strong>The main objectives of the crocodile project is\n<ul>\n<li>to protect the remaining population of crocodiles and their natural habitat by establishing sanctuaries;<\/li>\n<li>to promote captive breeding;<\/li>\n<li>to improve management; and to involve the local people in the project intimately.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Success:<\/strong> With the initiation of Crocodile Conservation Project, 4000 gharial\/alligator, 1800 mugger\/crocodile and 1500 saltwater crocodiles have been restocked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>UNDP Sea Turtle Project<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Objective: to conserve the Olive Ridley Turtles<\/li>\n<li>Initiated by Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun as the Implementing Agency in 1999.<\/li>\n<li>The project is for 10 coastal states especially Odisha<\/li>\n<li><strong>Contributions of the Program<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>Preparation of a map of breeding sites of Sea Turtles.<\/li>\n<li>Identification of breeding places and habitats along the coast line.<\/li>\n<li>Migratory routes taken by Sea Turtles.<\/li>\n<li>Development of guidelines to safeguard the turtle mortality rate and for tourism in sea turtle areas.<\/li>\n<li>Demonstration of use of Satellite Telemetry to locate the migratory route of sea turtles in the sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cheetah Reintroduction Programme<\/strong> in Kuno Palpur sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh from Namibia.\n<ul>\n<li>Cheetah went extinct in India in 1952.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Vulture Conservation:<\/strong> National Board for Wildlife (NBWL) has cleared a plan for conserving vultures.\n<ul>\n<li>The drugs that are used to treat cattle and known to poison vultures like Diclofenac are banned by the Drugs Controller General of India<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>India Rhino Vision (IRV) 2020: <\/strong>The goal of IRV2020 was to increase the rhino population in Assam to 3,000 by establishing populations in new areas.\n<ul>\n<li>Translocation of two rhinos earlier in 2020 to Manas National Park in Assam was also proposed .<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2010<\/strong> have been drafted to protect wetlands in India.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Related Organisations: <\/strong>Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, Central Zoo Authority, National Tiger Conservation Authority, Wildlife SOS, Wildlife Trust of India, Wildlife Institute of India, Aaranyak, Nature Conservation Foundation, etc.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Citizens&#8217; participation<\/strong>: The Prime Minister called for active participation of people in conservation efforts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:624px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>Convention for International Trade in Endangered Species <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Multilateral <strong>legally binding treaty<\/strong> to protect endangered plants &#038; animals.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aim:<\/strong> Ensure international trade in wild animals &#038; plants doesn\u2019t threaten their survival.<\/li>\n<li>Resolution adopted at the <strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature<\/strong> (IUCN) meeting in 1963 &#038; enforced from 1st July 1975.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>Source: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesnownews.com\/the-buzz\/article\/world-wildlife-day-2021-history-and-significance-theme-of-the-year\/727288\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>TimesNow<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News: World Wildlife Day 2021 is being celebrated on 3rd March with the theme \u2018Forests and Livelihoods: Sustaining People and Planet&#8216;.
