{"id":14194,"date":"2021-03-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/03-03-2021\/lavender-brings-profit-for-doda-farmers\/"},"modified":"2021-03-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-03T00:00:00","slug":"lavender-brings-profit-for-doda-farmers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/03-03-2021\/lavender-brings-profit-for-doda-farmers","title":{"rendered":"Lavender brings profit for Doda farmers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News &#8211;<\/strong>Income of farmers\u00a0 had quadrupled\u00a0\u00a0 after shifting from maize to lavender across villages in Doda .<\/p>\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lavender was introduced by Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine in the temperate regions of the J<strong>ammu division under CSIR-Aroma Mission in 2018 <\/strong>and <strong>tried to popularise it in Doda, Kishtwar, and Rajouri districts.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The farmers get help from IIIM-Jammu to sell their produce.\n<ul>\n<li>There are four <strong>distillation units set up by CSIR-IIIM Jammu <\/strong>in Doda and two more have been proposed to meet the increased demand.<\/li>\n<li>On February 9, 2021, CSIR-IIIM-Jammu announced <strong>Aroma Mission phase 2 after the success of the first phase.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outcomes &#8211;<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Lavender oil sells for at least Rs 10,000 per litre which helps\u00a0 in increasing farmers\u00a0 incomes.<\/li>\n<li>It also provided employment to the district\u2019s women farmers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Lavender<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/362182811154095940_image.png\" style=\"height:220px; margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px; width:328px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lavender, (genus Lavandula), genus of about 30 species of the mint family (Lamiaceae), native to countries bordering the<strong> Mediterranean. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Lavender species are common in <strong>herb gardens for their fragrant leaves<\/strong> and <strong>attractive flowers.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Lavenders are <strong>small evergreen shrubs with gray-green hoary linear leaves.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The<strong> purple flowers<\/strong> are<strong> sparsely arranged on spikes <\/strong>at the tips of<strong> long bare stalks<\/strong> and produce <strong>small nut let fruits. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>At present, l<strong>arge-scale lavender <\/strong>cultivation is limited to J&#038;K but governments in <strong>Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand <\/strong>are also encouraging their <strong>farmers to take up lavender. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Small scale farming of the <strong>plant is already underway in these states.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Usage &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The plants are widely <strong>cultivated for their essential oils<\/strong>, which are used to s<strong>cent a variety of products. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The dried flowers, for example, <strong>have long been used in sachets<\/strong> to<strong> scent chests and closets, <\/strong>and <strong>the ancient Romans used lavender in their baths<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Lavender is sometimes also used to<strong> flavour beverages and sweets and has a number of applications in herbal medicine<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Lavender oil, or lavender flower oil, is obtained by distillation of the flowers and is used <strong>chiefly in fine perfumes and cosmetics. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:735px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>Aroma Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It was launched\u00a0 in<strong> 2016 to boost cultivation of plants l<\/strong>ike lavender which <strong>have aromatic medicinal properties through new technology developed by Council of Scientific &#038; Industrial Research (CSIR).<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is envisaged to <strong>bring transformative change in the aroma secto<\/strong>r through desired <strong>interventions in the areas of agriculture,<\/strong> <strong>processing and product development<\/strong> for fuelling the <strong>growth of aroma industry and rural employment<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Benefits <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The mission will promote the <strong>cultivation of aromatic crops for essential oils <\/strong>that are in <strong>great demand by the aroma industry. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is<strong> expected to enable Indian farmers <\/strong>and<strong> aroma industry to become global leaders<\/strong> in the <strong>production and export of some other essential oils <\/strong>on the pattern of <strong>menthol mint. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>This is expected to provide <strong>substantial benefits to the farmers<\/strong> in <strong>achieving higher profits, utilization of waste lands and protection of their crops<\/strong> from wild and grazing animal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.downtoearth.org.in\/news\/agriculture\/jammu-s-purple-revolution-lavender-brings-in-scent-of-profit-for-doda-farmers-75714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source :DTE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News &#8211;Income of farmers\u00a0 had quadrupled\u00a0\u00a0 after shifting from maize to lavender across villages in Doda .
