{"id":14154,"date":"2021-03-01T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-03-01T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/01-03-2021\/channapatna-toys\/"},"modified":"2021-03-01T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-03-01T00:00:00","slug":"channapatna-toys","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/01-03-2021\/channapatna-toys","title":{"rendered":"Channapatna Toys"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Prime Minister of India has<strong> inaugurated the India Toy Fair 2021<\/strong> in <strong>New Delhi<\/strong>, where he stressed the need for<strong> innovation and novelty<\/strong> in toys.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He called upon<strong> Channapatna<\/strong> (Karnataka) <strong>toymakers<\/strong> to explore the possibility of <strong>e-marketing their traditional wears<\/strong> across the country and the world.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Channapatna and its Toys<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Channapatna town is in the <strong>Ramanagara<\/strong> District in <strong>Karnataka<\/strong> and is popularly known as \u2018<strong>Gombegala Nagara<\/strong>\u2019 (<strong>City of Toys<\/strong>) or the \u2018<strong>Toy Land of Karnataka<\/strong>\u2019.<\/li>\n<li>It is<strong> famous for its exquisite toys <\/strong>made by the <strong>small-scale industries<\/strong> in the town where as many as <strong>2,000 artisans are involved<\/strong> with around <strong>80 per cent<\/strong> of the workforce of <strong>men <\/strong>and <strong>20 per cent<\/strong> of <strong>women<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>History<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These toys have a <strong>history of over two centuries<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tipu Sultan<\/strong> (1750-1799) encouraged the <strong>Persians <\/strong>to come down to India to teach the artisans the <strong>art of making wooden toys<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The<strong> Father of Channapatna<\/strong> toy is <strong>Bavas Miyan<\/strong>, who is known for his commitment to life to help the local artisans with the art of toy-making and bringing in new technologies to improvise the toys.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The toys are <strong>made with soft ivory wood<\/strong> and given a <strong>polished look<\/strong>, adding <strong>colours and other beautifications<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The wood used is the <strong>Doodhi Wood<\/strong> (<strong>Milkwood<\/strong>) which is precisely<strong> white in colour <\/strong>and <strong>easy to carve out<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The woodwork is coloured using <strong>vegetable dyes<\/strong> and is <strong>free of chemicals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>For the <strong>glazing <\/strong>of the toys, the <strong>polishing is done with high abrasive property grass<\/strong>. Hence, the toys are<strong> completely environment-friendly<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Types<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These do not just consist of some dolls and horses, but also have mathematical games and puzzles, showpieces like vintage cars, beads like curtains, pen stands, snails, candle stands, etc and movable kinds like rocking horses, trains engines, motorcycles, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Concern<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> plastic toys<\/strong> especially <strong>dominated by the Chinese manufactured<\/strong> ones, <strong>led to the downfall<\/strong> of these intriguing toys in the market.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Suggestions<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Artisans should<strong> use advanced technology to popularise<\/strong> these toys across the world.<\/li>\n<li>They should also <strong>use the Information Technology (IT) workforce<\/strong> available in <strong>Bengaluru <\/strong>for the purpose.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/253855684265135330_image.png\" style=\"height:296px; margin-left:50px; margin-right:50px; width:444px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>(Image Courtesy: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outlookindia.com\/outlooktraveller\/explore\/story\/69274\/channapatna-toys-lesser-known-handicrafts-of-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Outlook India<\/em><\/a><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:735px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align:top; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>India Toy Fair <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a<strong> landmark initiative<\/strong> of the Government of India<strong> in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat by the year 2022<\/strong> to mark 75 years of India\u2019s Independence.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s<strong> local toy and games industry<\/strong> is set to play a crucial role in realising these aspirations and the fair is an<strong> effort to make India stand out for its rich and multifarious toy production<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The<strong> India Toy Fair 2021<\/strong> is the<strong> first-ever digitally accessible exhibition and platform<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The Government has also launched \u2018<strong>Toycathon<\/strong>\u2019, an <strong>online toy hackathon<\/strong> for innovative toys\/games concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thehindu.com\/news\/national\/karnataka\/prime-minister-modi-calls-for-e-marketing-of-channapatna-toys\/article33950976.ece\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source: TH<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News Recently, the Prime Minister of India has inaugurated the India Toy Fair 2021 in New Delhi, where he stressed the need for innovation and novelty in toys.
