{"id":14138,"date":"2021-02-27T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-27T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/27-02-2021\/ancient-buddhist-monastery-found-in-jharkhand\/"},"modified":"2021-02-27T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-27T00:00:00","slug":"ancient-buddhist-monastery-found-in-jharkhand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/27-02-2021\/ancient-buddhist-monastery-found-in-jharkhand","title":{"rendered":"Ancient Buddhist Monastery found in Jharkhand"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the\u00a0Archaeological Survey of India\u00a0(ASI) has unearthed a\u00a0Buddhist monastery,\u00a0buried under a\u00a0mound in a village situated in a hilly area of Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Older Related Discoveries<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In December last year, ASI found a Buddhist shrine with three rooms\u00a0near agricultural land on the eastern side of Juljul Pahar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The central shrine had Tara\u2019s statue and two subsidiary shrines had the Buddha\u2019s.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Last year, during excavation ASI, found a script of\u00a0four-five words\u00a0and they identified it as a\u00a0Nagri script\u00a0and dated it\u00a0between the 10th century AD\u00a0to\u00a012th century AD.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Nagri is a previous version of the Devnagri\u00a0script and the words indicate Buddhist religious affiliation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>This time they also\u00a0got Nagri script on a Tara statue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Current Findings<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A team from the Patna branch of ASI has\u00a0excavated 10 stone statues of the deity Tara\u00a0and the\u00a0Buddha in Burhani village\u00a0near\u00a0Juljul Pahar of\u00a0Sitagarhi\u00a0Hills, around 12 km from district headquarters\u00a0Hazaribagh.<\/li>\n<li>They found four statues of\u00a0deity Tara in Varad Mudra (gesture of hand showing\u00a0dispensing of boons)\u00a0and\u00a0six statues of the Buddha\u00a0in\u00a0bhumisparsha Mudra (gesture of hand showing five fingers of right hand towards the earth symbolising the Buddha\u2019s enlightenment).<\/li>\n<li>They found a\u00a0sculpture that appears to be that of Shaivite deity\u00a0Maheswari, with a\u00a0coiled crown and chakra,\u00a0indicating\u00a0cultural assimilation in the area.<\/li>\n<li>Findings are believed to be at least\u00a0900 years old.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is a significant finding as\u00a0deity Tara\u2019s statues means\u00a0that the place was an\u00a0important centre of Vajrayana sect of Buddhism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>This is also important in terms of the\u00a0spread of Buddhism in Jharkhand.
