{"id":14102,"date":"2021-02-25T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/25-02-2021\/tb-free-india-by-2025\/"},"modified":"2021-02-25T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-25T00:00:00","slug":"tb-free-india-by-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/25-02-2021\/tb-free-india-by-2025","title":{"rendered":"TB Free India by 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News:<\/strong> Dr Harsh Vardhan chairs High-Level Meet to review the launch of Jan-Andolan against Tuberculosis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Key Highlights of the Meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Ministry of Health wants to declare 2021 as the year of Tuberculosis.<\/li>\n<li>Gains from the <strong>National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme<\/strong> would feed into creating greater demand for services, de-stigmatize the disease and help realize the goal of a TB-free India by 2025.<\/li>\n<li>To further strengthen TB management and service delivery, engagement of the wider population and the spirit of Jan Andolan should be ensured through the following.\n<ul>\n<li>Generation of awareness.<\/li>\n<li>Encouragement of health care seeking behaviour within the communities.<\/li>\n<li>De-stigmatization of TB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Lessons can be drawn from COVID pandemic management.<\/li>\n<li><strong>National Technical Support Unit (NTSU)<\/strong> was also proposed to be set up.\n<ul>\n<li>It will support the Government of India\u2019s efforts, both nationally and in states.<\/li>\n<li>It will help strengthen on-ground program delivery by employing various advocacy and communications approaches to generate demand and create awareness on the services available under the TB program.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>National Tuberculosis Elimination Program (NTEP)<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Elimination as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), means that there should be less than 1 person with TB for a population of a million people.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Current Status: <\/strong>India accounts for about a quarter of the global TB burden.\n<ul>\n<li>In 2018 the estimated TB incidence was 2,690,000.<\/li>\n<li>An estimated 9,700 HIV positive people died due to TB disease.<\/li>\n<li>An estimated 440,000 HIV negative people died.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>India is also the country with the second-highest number (after South Africa) of estimated HIV associated TB cases.<\/li>\n<li>Worldwide India is the country with the highest burden of both TB and MDR TB.\n<ul>\n<li>The estimated incidence of people with MDR\/RR-TB is 130,000.<\/li>\n<li>The level of drug resistant TB is one of the factors that may cause India not to reach the target of elimination by 2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>After partial success of NTEP, a Revised NTEP (RNTEP) was launched with National Strategic Plan 2017-2025.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>National Strategic Plan 2017 &#8211; 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The financial resources for TB control for 2017 &#8211; 2025 are to be doubled.<\/li>\n<li>The diagnostic tool <strong>CB-NAAT<\/strong> is to be rolled out across the country.<\/li>\n<li>The two new drugs <strong>Bedaquiline and Delamanid<\/strong> are also scheduled for a broader rollout.<\/li>\n<li>First and second-line drug susceptibility testing is in use or at least on the agenda.<\/li>\n<li>Also, patients with TB are tested for HIV and patients with HIV are tested for TB.<\/li>\n<li>Drug treatment is moving from intermittent therapy to daily fixed-dose combinations.<\/li>\n<li>The private sector is to be engaged and the Prime Minister has added his voice to the crescendo of endorsement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:735px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align:top; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>About Tuberculosis<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Air-borne Contagious infection<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Usually attacks <strong>Lungs<\/strong> but can also affect other parts of the body, like the <strong>brain, eyes and spine<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Causal Organism: <strong>Bacteria<\/strong> called <strong>Mycobacterium tuberculosis<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Spreads when an infected person <strong>coughs or sneezes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Directly observed treatment (DOTs): <\/strong>Short-course (DOTS, also known as TB-DOTS) is the name given to tuberculosis (TB) control strategy recommended by the World Health Organization.\n<ul>\n<li>It was also deployed by India to curb the menace of TB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pmindia.gov.in\/en\/news_updates\/pms-dream-of-tb-free-india-by-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PMIndia<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News: Dr Harsh Vardhan chairs High-Level Meet to review the launch of Jan-Andolan against Tuberculosis.
