{"id":14060,"date":"2021-02-23T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-23T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/23-02-2021\/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-nafld\/"},"modified":"2021-02-23T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-23T00:00:00","slug":"non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-nafld","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/23-02-2021\/non-alcoholic-fatty-liver-disease-nafld","title":{"rendered":"Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News: <\/strong>Recently, the Ministry of Health &#038; Family Welfare has\u00a0 launched the <strong>operational guidelines for Integration of NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) <\/strong>with NPCDCS (National Programme for Prevention &#038; Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease)?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is the <strong>abnormal accumulation of fat<\/strong> in the liver in the absence of secondary causes of fatty liver, such as harmful alcohol use, viral hepatitis.<\/li>\n<li>It has <strong>serious health concerns<\/strong> as it encompasses a spectrum of liver abnormalities, from a simple non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL, simple fatty liver disease) to more advanced ones like <strong>non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)<\/strong>, cirrhosis and even liver cancer.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) <\/strong>is liver inflammation and damage caused by a buildup of fat in the liver.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cirrhosis <\/strong>is a complication of liver disease that involves loss of liver cells and irreversible scarring of the liver.<strong> Alcohol and viral hepatitis B and C<\/strong> are common causes of cirrhosis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Over the last two decades the global burden of NASH has more than doubled.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Matter of Concerns<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NAFLD is emerging as an <strong>important cause of liver disease<\/strong> in India.<\/li>\n<li>Epidemiological studies suggest the <strong>prevalence of NAFLD is around 9% to 32% of the general population in India<\/strong> with a higher prevalence in those with overweight or obesity and those with diabetes or prediabetes.<\/li>\n<li>Researchers have found <strong>NAFLD in 40% to 80 % of people <\/strong>who have type 2 diabetes and in 30% to 90 % of people who are obese.<\/li>\n<li>Studies also suggest that people with NAFLD have a greater chance of <strong>developing cardiovascular disease.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Once the disease develops, there is <strong>no specific cure available.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Initiative taken<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>NPCDCS programme strategies can easily be aligned to prevent NAFLD through lifestyle changes, early diagnosis, and management of associated non-communicable diseases as well as NAFLD.<\/li>\n<li>The role of <strong>Ayushman Bharat- Health and Wellness Centres (AB-HWCs) <\/strong>in curbing NCDs is immensely beneficial.<\/li>\n<li>The focus of <strong>\u2018Eat Right India\u2019 and \u2018Fit India Movement\u2019<\/strong> are right steps in this direction.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News: Recently, the Ministry of Health &#038; Family Welfare has\u00a0 launched the operational guidelines for Integration of NAFLD (Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) with NPCDCS (National Programme for Prevention &#038; Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke).
