{"id":14016,"date":"2021-02-03T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/03-02-2021\/chauri-chaura-centenary-celebrations\/"},"modified":"2021-02-03T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T00:00:00","slug":"chauri-chaura-centenary-celebrations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/03-02-2021\/chauri-chaura-centenary-celebrations","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Chauri Chaura\u2019 Centenary Celebrations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News &#8211; <\/strong>Prime Minister will inaugurate the <strong>Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebration<\/strong>s at Chauri Chaura, <strong>Gorakhpur on 4th February 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>He will also release a <strong>postal stamp<\/strong> dedicated to the Chauri Chaura centenary during the event.<\/li>\n<li>The centenary celebrations and various events planned by the State government will begin in <strong>all 75 districts of the State<\/strong> from 4th February 2021 and will continue till 4th February 2022.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Chauri Chaura incident:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The incident took place on <strong>4 February 1922<\/strong> at Chauri Chaura in the <strong>Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A large group of freedom fighters of\u00a0 <strong>Congress and Khilafat activists<\/strong> participating in the Non-cooperation movement <strong>were fired upon by police, leading to the death of many of them. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In retaliation, <strong>protestors attacked<\/strong> and set fire to the <strong>Chauri Chaura police station<\/strong>, killing many of its occupants.<\/li>\n<li>Mahatma Gandhi, who was completely against violence, stopped the Non-cooperation movement on 12 February the same year.<\/li>\n<li>The British government, in response, imposed martial law in the area and arrested hundreds of people including <strong>Mahatma Gandhi.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pib.gov.in\/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=1694344\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Source: PIB<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News &#8211; Prime Minister will inaugurate the Chauri Chaura Centenary Celebrations at Chauri Chaura, Gorakhpur on 4th February 2021.
