margin-left:150px; margin-right:150px; width:304px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About Fishing Cat:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Scientific Name &#8211; Prionailurus viverrinus<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The fishing cat is <strong>nocturnal<\/strong> and apart from fish also <strong>preys on frogs, crustaceans,<\/strong> <strong>snakes, birds,<\/strong> and <strong>scavenges on carcasses of larger animals.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is capable of <strong>breeding<\/strong> all year round but in I<strong>ndia its peak breeding season<\/strong> is known to be between <strong>March and May.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Characteristics-<\/strong>\u00a0 An <strong>adept swimmer<\/strong> and <strong>enters water frequently<\/strong> to prey on fish.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Distribution<\/strong> -Wetlands are the favorite habitats of the fishing cat.\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>India<\/strong>, fishing cats are mainly found in the <strong>mangrove forests<\/strong> of the <strong>Sundarbans<\/strong>, on the<strong> foothills of the Himalayas along the Ganga<\/strong> and <strong>Brahmaputra river valleys and in the Western Ghats.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Apart from Sundarbans fishing cats inhabit the Chilika lagoon and surrounding wetlands in Odisha, Coringa and Krishna mangroves in Andhra Pradesh.<\/li>\n<li>Fishing cats have a patchy distribution along the Eastern Ghats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Conservation Status:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>IUCN Status <\/strong>-It is listed as <strong>\u2018vulnerable\u2019 <\/strong>on the <strong>International Union for Conservation of Nature\u2019s Red List.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The United Nations <strong>Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)<\/strong> lists the fishing cat on <strong>Appendix II in Article IV of CITES<\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0This governs international trade in this species.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The species is also classified under the<strong> first schedule<\/strong> of the <strong>Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Threats <\/strong>&#8211;\n<ul>\n<li>The conservation threats to fishing cats are mainly &#8211;\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Habitat loss<\/strong> [<strong>wetland degradation<\/strong> and <strong>conversion for aquaculture<\/strong> and other <strong>commercial projects].<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Sand mining<\/strong> along river banks, agricultural intensification resulting in loss of riverine buffer and conflict with humans in certain areas resulting in targeted hunting and retaliatory killings.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Efforts &#8211;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0In 2012, the West Bengal government officially declared the Fishing Cat as the State Animal.<\/li>\n<li>The Odisha forest department has started a two-year conservation project for fishing cats in Bhitarkanika National Park in Kendrapara district in june 2020<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:742px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc;
