{"id":13956,"date":"2021-02-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/09-02-2021\/srivilliputhur-megamalai-tiger-reserve-in-tn\/"},"modified":"2021-02-09T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-09T00:00:00","slug":"srivilliputhur-megamalai-tiger-reserve-in-tn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/09-02-2021\/srivilliputhur-megamalai-tiger-reserve-in-tn","title":{"rendered":"Srivilliputhur\u2013Megamalai Tiger Reserve in TN"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News-<\/strong>Recently, <strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Tamil Nadu state government has given its approval for the creation of a fifth <strong>tiger reserve in Tamil Nadu <\/strong>named <strong>Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve (SMTR).<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) gave in-principle approval under Section 38 V(1) of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 last month.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The last tiger reserve was notified six years ago in Arunachal Pradesh, Kamlang.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/26217216615662896_image.png\" style=\"height:375px; margin-left:100px; margin-right:100px; width:346px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>About <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will encompass the<strong> Meghamalai and Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife<\/strong> Sanctuaries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The new tiger reserve will lead to<strong> wildlife protection of the country\u2019s flagship species <\/strong>and will also result in the <strong>rejuvenation of the Vaigai river<\/strong> by protecting the river\u2019s origins in these forests.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Vaigai is a lifeline<\/strong> for five districts and provides drinking water to nearly one crore people.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>It will give a boost to tiger conservation in the State.<\/li>\n<li>Tigers from the neighbouring Periyar Tiger Reserve and Anamalai Tiger Reserve regions can find significant habitats and breed in the terrains of <strong>Megamalai and Srivilliputhur <\/strong>which are largely<strong> uninhabited\u201d and could <\/strong>\u201coffer <strong>excellent genetic exchange grounds\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:742px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>Meghamalai and Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Meghamalai Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across the districts of <strong>Theni and Madurai (Highways mountains and Cardamom Hills) <\/strong>while the<strong> Srivilliputhur Grizzled Squirrel Wildlife Sanctuary l<\/strong>ies along with <strong>Kerala\u2019s Periyar Tiger Reserve<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Srivilluputhur,<strong>hosts leopards, Nilgiri tahrs, lion-tailed macaques, jungle cats and sambars.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:742px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"background-color:#fff2cc; width:6.5in\">\n<p><strong>About Project Tiger:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is one of the major projects launched for the protection and conservation of tigers in India.<\/li>\n<li>It was started in 1973 with 9 tiger reserves.
