{"id":13918,"date":"2021-02-19T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/19-02-2021\/connectivity-projects-in-assam\/"},"modified":"2021-02-19T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T00:00:00","slug":"connectivity-projects-in-assam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/19-02-2021\/connectivity-projects-in-assam","title":{"rendered":"Connectivity Projects in Assam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News- <\/strong>Prime Minister launched <strong>multiple infrastructure projects<\/strong> in Assam.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister also wished the <strong>Mising community<\/strong> for the <strong>Ali-Aye-Ligang festival<\/strong> associated with agriculture.\n<ul>\n<li>Mising community is an indigenous community inhabiting parts of the Indian states of <strong>Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Ali-Ay\u00e9 means seeds in a row<\/strong>, and <strong>L\u00edgang means sowing of seeds<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a festival marking the beginning of the sowing season, and marks the start of a new agricultural calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About Projects<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mahabahu-Brahmaputra inland waterway project-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The launch of <strong>Mahabahu-Brahmaputra<\/strong> will be marked by the inauguration of the three Ro-pax vessel operations between Neamati-Majuli Island, North Guwahati-South Guwahati and Dhubri-Hatsingimari.<\/li>\n<li>The Ro-Pax ferry services cut travel time by providing connectivity between banks.<\/li>\n<li>Cost -3200 crore<\/li>\n<li>It is aimed<strong> <\/strong>at improving water transport connectivity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Inland Water Transport (IWT) Terminal &#8211;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The foundation stone of Inland Water Transport (IWT) Terminal at <strong>Jogighopa and various tourist jetties on the Brahmaputra will be laid down.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>These jetties will promote river <strong>cruise tourism, create employment opportunities and generate growth for local business.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0E-portals-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Two e-portals will be launched to further ease of doing business.\n<ul>\n<li>The<strong> Car-D portal<\/strong> will help in <strong>collating real-time information <\/strong>on all the <strong>cargo and cruise traffic data of the National Waterway.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0It will also provide<strong> information related to the infrastructure of Waterway. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>PANI (Portal for Asset and Navigation Information) <\/strong>will act as a <strong>one-stop solution<\/strong> for <strong>providing information about river navigation<\/strong> and <strong>infrastructure<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Dhubri Phulbari bridge &#8211;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Foundation stone for a <strong>19-km-long four-lane<\/strong>\u00a0 <strong>Dhubri Phulbari bridge over the Brahmaputra <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It will be <strong>India\u2019s longest bridge over a river<\/strong> that connects<strong> Dhubri in Assam and Phulbari in Meghalaya<\/strong>, to be constructed at the cost of Rs 5,000 crore.<\/li>\n<li>Assam and Meghalaya will have a <strong>direct connection with West Bengal through this bridge.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u00a0Majuli bridge-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>6.8-km-long two-lane bridge <strong>Majuli bridge<\/strong> that <strong>would connect Kamalabari in Majuli,<\/strong> <strong>the world\u2019s largest river island to Neematighat in Jorhat<\/strong> was inaugurated<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>These steps would improve connectivity and promote water transportation in Assam.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>It will provide connectivity to the eastern parts of the country as a whole.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other initiatives for development of the Northeast<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Bamboo Mission- <\/strong>The Mission envisages promoting holistic growth of the <strong>bamboo sector<\/strong> by <strong>adopting area-based,regionally differentiated strategy<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>The aim is to increase the area under <strong>bamboo cultivation and marketing<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bru or Reang resettlement- <\/strong>The agreement has been signed between the Government of India, Government of Tripura and Mizoram and Bru community representatives in New Delhi on 16th January 2020 to put an end to the 23 years old Bru refugee crisis.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Digital North East Vision 2022- <\/strong>It was launched by the Union Minister for Electronics &#038; IT in Guwahati.\n<ul>\n<li>The Vision Document emphasizes leveraging digital technologies to transform lives of people of the north east and enhance the ease of living.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>NITI Forum for North East: Focussed attention for development of NER: <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The forum examines various proposals both at the Central and the State levels and prepares plans for the speedy development of the North Eastern Region.<\/li>\n<li>The Forum proposed that the development projects in the NER would be based on the concept of \u201cHIRA\u201d (Highways, Inland Waterways, Railways and Airways)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Significance of North East Region<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>North Eastern Region<\/strong> is ideal for<strong> both passive and adventure <\/strong>forms of <strong>Ecotourism with wildlife sanctuary\/parks, good scenic beauty, waterfalls, forests<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<li>The region has many <strong>famous and old religious spots<\/strong>, which have been integrated with<strong> national tourism circuits.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In view of the attractive natural environment and growing trends of outbound business meets, the <strong>NER also offers ample opportunities for the business tourism segmen<\/strong>t.<\/li>\n<li>Heritage tourism has picked up considerably in the Region with a participatory approach.<\/li>\n<li>The North East will play an important role in<strong> India\u2019s Act East Policy. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The region is home to a large <strong>number of ethnic communities and diverse tribal groups<\/strong> having unique dialects and traditions.<\/li>\n<li>Northeast states are increasingly gaining a significant <strong>strategic value. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>With ASEAN engagement <strong>becoming a central pillar of India\u2019s foreign policy direction,<\/strong> these<strong> states play an important role as the physical bridge between India and Southeast Asia.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/591216439317094400_image.png\" style=\"height:300px; margin-left:150px; margin-right:150px; width:300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Seven Sisters of Northeast India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The \u2018seven sisters\u2019 of Northeast India comprise <strong>Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Tripura.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Sikkim is also a part of the Northeast<\/strong> but is not included in the <strong>Seven Sisters <\/strong>because while the other seven states are contiguous, Sikkim is <strong>sort of a neighbour, divided by the Siliguri Corridor.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Sikkim is also referred to as the <strong>\u2018Brother\u2019 of the Seven Sisters.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:750px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align:top; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>What is the Siliguri Corridor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India\u2019s North East is geographically <\/strong>isolated from the<strong> rest of India<\/strong> and is connected to the mainland by a <strong>narrow strip of land called the Siliguri Corridor<\/strong> also known as <strong>Chicken\u2019s Neck.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0It is about <strong>200 km long and 60 km wide<\/strong>.
