<strong>her budget speech.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>About:<\/strong> <strong>Hydrogen Energy Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is<strong> <\/strong>proposed to launch in<strong> 2021-22<\/strong> for <strong>generating hydrogen<\/strong> from<strong> green power sources.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It is essential to <strong>decarbonise<\/strong> <strong>heavy industries <\/strong>like steel and cement, it also holds the key to clean<strong> electric mobility<\/strong> that <strong>doesn\u2019t depend on rare minerals<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Significance <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Green hydrogen energy is vital for India to meet its <strong>Nationally Determined Contributions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>It is a clean-burning molecule, which can decarbonise a range of sectors including iron and steel, chemicals, and transportation.<\/li>\n<li>The initiative has the potential of transforming transportation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What is Hydrogen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is considered the future of<strong> clean and sustainable energy. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It can be directly <strong>used as a fuel similar to natural gas<\/strong> or as input for fuel cells to <strong>generate electricity.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The sources and processes by which hydrogen is derived, are <strong>categorised <\/strong>by<strong> colour tabs. <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Hydrogen produced from fossil fuels<\/strong> is <strong>called grey hydrogen<\/strong>, this constitutes the bulk of the <strong>hydrogen produced today.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<strong>Hydrogen generated <\/strong>from <strong>fossil fuels<\/strong> with <strong>carbon capture<\/strong> and storage options is <strong>called blue hydrogen.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Hydrogen generated entirely from <strong>renewable power sources is called green<\/strong> hydrogen.\n<ul>\n<li>In the last process, <strong>electricity generated from renewable energy<\/strong> is used to <strong>split water into hydrogen and oxygen<\/strong> <strong>in an electrolyser.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Benefits <\/strong>&#8211;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Experts believe <strong>hydrogen vehicles <\/strong>can be effective in<strong> long-haul trucking<\/strong> and <strong>other hard-to-electrify sectors<\/strong> such as<strong> shipping and long-haul<\/strong> air travel.<\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen is about<strong> two to three times as efficient<\/strong> as<strong> burning petrol<\/strong> because an <strong>electric chemical reaction<\/strong> is much <strong>more efficient than combustion.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Hydrogen can act as an <strong>energy storage option<\/strong>, which would be essential to meet <strong>intermittencies (of renewable energy) in the future.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>It ensures <strong>regional and national energy security<\/strong>, access and availability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Instances of Usage &#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Globally <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Hydrogen\u2019s potential as a clean fuel source has a history spanning nearly 150 years.<\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1937<\/strong>, the <strong>German passenger airship LZ129 Hindenburg<\/strong> used <strong>hydrogen fuel<\/strong> to fly a<strong>cross the Atlantic<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>In the late 1960s, <strong>hydrogen fuel cells helped power NASA\u2019s Apollo missions <\/strong>to the moon.<\/li>\n<li><strong>South Korea and Japan<\/strong> are focussed on <strong>moving their automotive markets <\/strong>to <strong>hydrogen, and the potential of the fuel cell. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Indian Scenario-<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In <strong>October, Delhi became the first Indian city to operate buses running on hydrogen<\/strong> spiked <strong>compressed natural gas (H-CNG)<\/strong> in a six-month pilot project.<\/li>\n<li>Power major NTPC Ltd is operating a pilot to run 10 hydrogen fuel cell-based <strong>electric buses and fuel cell electric cars<\/strong> in Leh and Delhi.<\/li>\n<li>The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways late last year issued a notification proposing amendments to the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, to include safety evaluation standards for <strong>hydrogen fuel cell-based vehicles.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/109664346464273070_image.png\" style=\"height:201px; margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px; width:216px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Challenges <\/strong>:\n<ul>\n<li>A big barrier to the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell vehicles has been a lack of <strong>fuelling station infrastructure<\/strong>..\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0There are fewer than 500 operational hydrogen stations in the world today, mostly in Europe, followed by Japan and South Korea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Safety is seen as a concern and <strong>it is highly flammable.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>In terms of challenges to<strong> green hydrogen specifically<\/strong>, the cost of renewable electricity is the <strong>major problem.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Way Forward<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a need to <strong>reduce electrolyser costs<\/strong> and supply chain logistics.\n<ul>\n<li>This will require funding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Policymakers should also consider how to <strong>create legislative frameworks<\/strong> that facilitate the integration of the hydrogen-based<strong> sector.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Public investments<\/strong> need to be strategized<strong> and channellised
