{"id":13888,"date":"2021-02-17T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-17T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/17-02-2021\/googles-payment-deal-with-australian-media-firm\/"},"modified":"2021-02-17T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T00:00:00","slug":"googles-payment-deal-with-australian-media-firm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/17-02-2021\/googles-payment-deal-with-australian-media-firm","title":{"rendered":"Google\u2019s Payment Deal with Australian Media Firm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News: Recently, Australia\u2019s Seven West Media <\/strong>has become the first<strong> major media group i<\/strong>n the country to sign a <strong>licensing deal with Google<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>About the Deal<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In July 2020, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) had <strong>proposed <\/strong>that <strong>media companies<\/strong> could bargain terms of payment for their <strong>articles featured in the news feed of online tech giants<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>This means that if <strong>Google and Facebook<\/strong> include <strong>certain news items from media companies <\/strong>on their platform in various services, they <strong>would have to pay the media companies a certain amount.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It was <\/strong>a part of its efforts to tackle the <strong>rising powers of companies<\/strong> such as <strong>Google<\/strong> and <strong>Facebook.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Key Highlights<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Under the agreement, <strong>Google will negotiate individual licensing deals<\/strong> with <strong>newspapers and payments<\/strong> will be based on f<strong>actors such as the amount of published news<\/strong> and <strong>monthly internet site traffic.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The legislation would <strong>create an arbitration panel<\/strong> to make <strong>binding decisions on payment<\/strong> in cases where a platform and a news business can\u2019t agree on a price for news.\n<ul>\n<li>This would discourage both the platforms and news businesses from making unrealistic demands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Aims<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>To create a level playing field where market power is not misused and there is appropriate compensation for the production of original news content.<\/li>\n<li>To remove the digital giants&#8217; dominant bargaining positions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Implications <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Owing to their <strong>worldwide presence<\/strong>, both G<strong>oogle and Facebook<\/strong> are likely to be <strong>under pressure<\/strong> paying for the news content which they use in other countries as well.<\/li>\n<li>In countries such as <strong>France<\/strong>, G<strong>oogle <\/strong>has already <strong>signed deals with news<\/strong> <strong>publishers<\/strong> to pay for the <strong>news being included in its search feed.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Google claims it has offered similar deals to other news and media agencies across the world and <strong>governments across countries<\/strong> are <strong>likely to scrutinise these deals<\/strong> to check for the <strong>balance of bargaining power of the company.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>For example, the European Union is also likely to propose legislation forcing big tech companies to pay for the content they use, despite the offer made by Google.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/australias-seven-west-medias-deal-with-google-its-significance-and-impact-7191171\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source: IE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News: Recently, Australia\u2019s Seven West Media has become the first major media group in the country to sign a licensing deal with Google.
