{"id":13868,"date":"2021-02-16T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-16T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/16-02-2021\/sandes-application\/"},"modified":"2021-02-16T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-16T00:00:00","slug":"sandes-application","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/16-02-2021\/sandes-application","title":{"rendered":"Sandes Application"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>National Informatics Centre, a branch under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, launched<\/strong> an <strong>instant messaging platform<\/strong> called <strong>Sandes <\/strong>on the lines of <strong>WhatsApp. <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Like WhatsApp, it can be used for <strong>all kinds of communications by anyone with a mobile number or email id.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/49432280511558880_image.png\" style=\"height:247px; margin-left:200px; margin-right:200px; width:364px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why Needed?<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The government felt the need to build a platform to <strong>ensure secure communication <\/strong>between its <strong>employees <\/strong>as they worked from home during the Covid-19 induced lockdown<\/li>\n<li>After security scares, the Ministry of Home Affairs had in April issued an advisory to all government employees to avoid using platforms like <strong>Zoom for official communication<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>This was after the <strong>Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In)<\/strong> had also posted an advisory against Zoom over safety and privacy concerns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Sandes has come at a time when WhatsApp users are moving to other instant <strong>messaging platforms<\/strong> after the Facebook-owned app introduced its new<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nextias.com\/whatsapp-privacy-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> privacy policy,<\/a> which will share more of their data with its parent company.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Sandes App<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The NIC released the first version of the app in August 2020 and the app could be used by both <strong>central and state government officials <\/strong>\u201cfor<strong> intra and inter-organisational communication\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The launch of the app is also a part of the government strategy to push for use of <strong>India-made software<\/strong> to build an <strong>ecosystem of indigenously developed products<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Open initially only to government officers, it has now been released for the common public as well.<\/li>\n<li>It is famously known as the <strong>Government Instant Messaging System.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Features<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sandes app can be run on both iOS and Android platforms.<\/li>\n<li>It also supports <strong>voice and data messages<\/strong>, similar to other modern-day chatting apps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>It also offers features such as group making, broadcast message, message forwarding and emojis.<\/li>\n<li>It allows a user to mark a <strong>message as confidential,<\/strong> which will allow the recipient to be made aware the message <strong>should not be shared with others.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The confidential tag, however, does not change the way the message is sent from one user to another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Limitation<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The app does not allow the user to change their email id or registered phone number.\n<ul>\n<li>The user will have to re-register as a new user in case they wish to change their registered email id or phone number on the app.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:1000px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align:top; width:468.0pt\">\n<p><strong>Cybercrime Safeguards in India<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Information Technology Act 2000<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>In India, the Information Technology Act deals with cybercrime and comes under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. There are only six sections in the law that deal with cybercrime.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre (NCIIPC) <\/strong>operates as the nodal agency in cybercrime-related cases.<\/li>\n<li>A few recent initiatives for cybersecurity are<strong> Cyber Surakshit Bharat Initiative,<\/strong> <strong>National Cybersecurity Coordination Centre (NCCC), Cyber Swachhta Kendra<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>CERT-In (the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team)-It <\/strong>is a government-mandated information technology security organization.\n<ul>\n<li>The purpose of CERT-In is to respond to computer security incidents, report on vulnerabilities and promote effective IT security practices throughout the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/explained\/explained-sandesh-the-governments-new-instant-messaging-platform-7189759\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source :IE<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In News- The National Informatics Centre, a branch under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, launched an instant messaging platform called Sandes on the lines of WhatsApp. Like WhatsApp, it can be used for all kinds of communications by anyone with a mobile number or email id.
