{"id":13852,"date":"2021-02-15T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-02-15T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/current_affairs\/uncategorized\/15-02-2021\/arjun-main-battle-tank\/"},"modified":"2021-02-15T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-15T00:00:00","slug":"arjun-main-battle-tank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/ca\/current-affairs\/15-02-2021\/arjun-main-battle-tank","title":{"rendered":"Arjun Main Battle Tank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>In News<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Recently, the Prime Minister of India has handed over the <strong>Arjun Main Battle Tank<\/strong> (<strong>MK-1A<\/strong>) to the<strong> Indian Army<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Ministry of Defence<\/strong> had ordered <strong>118 units<\/strong> of the Arjun Mk-1A, which are being inducted at a <strong>revised cost of over Rs. 8,400 crore<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>About the Tank<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>Arjun Main Battle Tank project<\/strong> was initiated by the<strong> Defence Research and Development Organisation<\/strong> (DRDO) in <strong>1972<\/strong> along with the Chennai-based <strong>Combat Vehicles Research and Development Establishment<\/strong> (CVRDE) as its lead laboratory.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Project\u2019s Objective: <\/strong>To create a state-of-the-art tank with superior firepower, high mobility, and excellent protection.<\/li>\n<li>The engine, transmission, hydropneumatic suspension, hull and turret and the gun control system have been<strong> indigenously designed, developed and manufactured<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>Along with the CVRDE and DRDO, 15 academic institutions, eight labs and several MSMEs played an important role in the development.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mass production<\/strong> began in <strong>1996 <\/strong>at the<strong> Indian Ordnance Factory\u2019s<\/strong> production facility in <strong>Avadi, Tamil Nadu<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Features of the Tank<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fin Stabilised Armour Piercing Discarding Sabot<\/strong> (FSAPDS) ammunition.\n<ul>\n<li>FSAPDS ammunition is the most lethal kinetic energy ammunition, capable of destroying all known tank armour up to direct shooting range.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>120-mm <strong>calibre rifled gun<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Computer-controlled integrated fire control system<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stabilised sighting<\/strong> that works in all lighting conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Day-sight, thermal sight, a laser range finder, panoramic sight<\/strong>, etc. in the gunner\u2019s main sight.<\/li>\n<li><strong>All-round protection<\/strong> from anti-tank ammunition by <strong>KANCHAN armour<\/strong>.\n<ul>\n<li>KANCHAN is a <strong>unique composite material<\/strong>, which can handle a variety of anti-tank ammunition of extreme severity.<\/li>\n<li>It has been developed by the <strong>Defence Metallurgical Research Laboratory <\/strong>(DMRL).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Secondary Weapons<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>A co-axial 7.62-mm machine gun for anti-personnel targets.<\/li>\n<li>A 12.7-mm machine gun for anti-aircraft and ground targets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Difference from the Earlier Versions<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>The Mk-1A version has<strong> 14 major upgrades<\/strong> on the earlier version.<\/li>\n<li>It has the <strong>missile firing capability<\/strong> as per the design, which will be <strong>added later<\/strong> as final testing of this capability is in process.<\/li>\n<li>The biggest achievement is <strong>54.3 per cent indigenous content against the 41 per cent in the earlier model<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cfstatic.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/file_library\/mix_content\/365986938658451700_image.png\" style=\"height:378px; margin-left:150px; margin-right:150px; width:386px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 (Image Courtesy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.drdo.gov.in\/mbt-arjun-tank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DRDO<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Significance<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The latest <strong>major and user-driven upgrades<\/strong> make the tank a <strong>world-class battle tank <\/strong>and will <strong>exceptionally benefit the Indian Army<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>The tanks made in Tamil Nadu will be used on India\u2019s northern borders, a move <strong>showcasing India\u2019s united spirit<\/strong> (<strong><em>Bharat\u2019s Ekta Darshan<\/em><\/strong>).<\/li>\n<li>The development of this tank is being seen as a step towards <strong>achieving self-reliance in India&#8217;s defence production abilities<\/strong>, giving a boost to the <strong>Atmanirbhar Bharat<\/strong> <strong>Initiative<\/strong> and also <strong>Make in India<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"1\" cellspacing=\"0\" style=\"width:1080px\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"vertical-align:top;
