        • This is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first of its kind project in India<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, where plastic waste is de-structured, degraded, diluted and used with paper pulp while making handmade paper and thus reduces plastic waste from nature.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • It was <\/span><\/span><\/span>launched in 2018<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in line with the Prime Minister\u2019s \u2018Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

  • Recently, Red Tide <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>has swept Florida\u2019s Gulf of Mexico Coast, killing 1,400 tonnes of fish in and around Tampa alone.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Its origins have been traced back to another red tide in December 2020.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Karenia Brevis<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is a type of algae commonly known as<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2018Red Tide\u2019 and Harmful Algal Bloom(HABs).<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It occurs when <\/span><\/span><\/span>colonies of algae<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> simple plants<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that <\/span><\/span><\/span>live in the sea<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>freshwate<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>r grow<\/span><\/span><\/span> out of contro<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>l while producing toxic or harmful effects on people, fish, shellfish, marine mammals, and birds.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The human illnesses caused by <\/span><\/span><\/span>HABs, though rare, can be debilitating or even fatal.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        What are Algal Blooms?<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • Algal blooms<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> are dense layers of tiny green plants that<\/span><\/span><\/span> occur on the surface of lakes and other bodies <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of water when there is an overabundance of nutrients (primarily phosphorus) on which algae depend.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

          • Not all algal blooms are harmful. Most blooms, in fact, are beneficial because the <\/span><\/span><\/span>tiny plants are food for animals<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the ocean.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Recently, Karnataka Chief Minister reiterated that there would be no compromise on implementing the Mekedatu\u00a0 drinking water project<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The Mekedatu drinking water project is being constructed by the Karnataka government across the<\/span><\/span><\/span> Cauvery River<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is aimed at providing drinking water facilities to the Bengaluru Metropolitan region and its surrounding areas (4.75 TMC) and generates 400 MW of power as an additional benefit.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The project cost is estimated at Rs 9,000 crore.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

  • Recently, the Indian Council of Scientific and Industrial Research\u2019s Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI) inaugurated a \u201cnaturally ventilated<\/span><\/span><\/span> polyhouse facility<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d and laid the foundation stone of \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>retractable roof polyhouse\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in its Ludhiana centre.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Retractable Roof Polyhouse Technology<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/u><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          • It will have an <\/span><\/span><\/span>automatic retractable roof<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> which will be operated based on <\/span><\/span><\/span>weather conditions<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>crop requirements<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> from the conditional database using PLC software.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • It would be used to <\/span><\/span><\/span>manipulate sunlight quantity, quality & duration, water stress, humidity, carbon dioxide levels as well as crop and soil temperatures.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
          • This ongoing development will be useful in India with its 15 different agro-climatic zones.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

            • It is a viable technology for organic cultivation<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

E Prisons Project<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • The Ministry of Home Affairs has provided financial assistance of Rs 99.49 crores to the States and Union Territories for the E- Prisons Project.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • It aims at <\/span><\/span><\/span>computerization of the functioning of prisons <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>in the country and has been operationalised in all States and Union Territories.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The e-Prisons application <\/span><\/span><\/span>suite integrates all the activities<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> related to prison and prisoner management.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The E-Prisons application suite has been developed by <\/span><\/span><\/span>National Informatics Centre (NIC)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Ministry of Electronics & IT (MeitY).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It provides <\/span><\/span><\/span>vital information about the inmates lodged<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the prisons in a<\/span><\/span><\/span> real-time environment<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to the courts, prison officials and other entities involved in the Criminal Justice System. It facilitates online visit requests and grievance redressal.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • National Prisons Information Portal (NPIP): <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>It is a citizen-centric portal showing statistical data of various prisons in the country. Visitors can book their visit request to meet their ward inside the prison through this portal. Grievances with respect to their wards inside the prisons can also be submitted through the portal;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Kara Bazaar:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Portal for showcasing and selling the products manufactured in various prisons of the country by inmates.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Controlled registration of prisoners<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (checking duplicity of prisoner\u2019s entry to the jail); the system helps in recording and tracking prisoners’ movement activities and their management throughout the term.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Prisons in India<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • It is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>State subject under Entry 4 of List II of the Seventh Schedule<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to the Constitution of India.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • The administration and management of prisons is the responsibility of respective State Governments.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • However, the Ministry of Home Affairs provides regular guidance and advice to States and UTs on various issues concerning prisons and prison inmates.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • The Supreme Court had in September 2018 appointed the Justice Roy Committee to examine the various problems plaguing prisons, from overcrowding to lack of legal advice to convicts to issues of remission and parole.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

    • It is an <\/span><\/span><\/span>initiative of the Ministry of Textiles<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to register and provide Identity (ID) cards to handicraft artisans and link them to a national database.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Pahchan cards scheme is a <\/span><\/span><\/span>newly upgraded ID card for artisans<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that will be linked with their Aadhaar numbers and bank accounts so that they can receive direct cash-transfer benefits.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It has the information of handicrafts artisans viz. name & address, Aadhaar Card number, mobile number and craft practised.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
