Recently, the inventory of Swiss Glacial lakes has shown that <\/span><\/span><\/span>almost 1,200 new lakes have formed<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in formerly glaciated regions of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Swiss Alps<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> since the end of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Little Ice Age <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(LIA) around 1850.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Project-75 India<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, the Defence Ministry has issued the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Request For Proposal <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(RFP) for construction of six advanced conventional submarines for the Navy under <\/span><\/span><\/span>Project-75 India <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>or<\/span><\/span><\/span> P-75I<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • P-75I envisages indigenous <\/span><\/span><\/span>construction of six modern conventional submarines<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with contemporary equipment, weapons and sensors including Fuel-Cell based <\/span><\/span><\/span>Air Independent Propulsion <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(AIP) system, advanced torpedoes, modern missiles and state-of-the-art countermeasure systems.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>overall aim<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> would be to progressively build indigenous capabilities in the public\/private sector to design, develop and manufacture complex weapon systems for the future needs of the Armed Forces.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It will be an important step towards <\/span><\/span><\/span>meeting broader national objectives<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, encouraging self reliance and aligning the defence sector.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The project is part of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>30 Year Plan <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>for <\/span><\/span><\/span>indigenous submarine construction<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> which was <\/span><\/span><\/span>approved<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> by the Cabinet Committee on Security way back in <\/span><\/span><\/span>1999<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • It envisaged the <\/span><\/span><\/span>construction of 24 submarines<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first 12<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in collaboration <\/span><\/span><\/span>with foreign Original Equipment Manufacturers<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (OEMs) by 2012 and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>remaining 12<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>indigenously<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> thereafter.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The aim of the plan was to <\/span><\/span><\/span>streamline submarine construction and induction<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> to ensure contemporary capability besides consolidating the submarine building eco-system within the country.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • However, <\/span><\/span><\/span>only three submarines<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> have been commissioned and no more than <\/span><\/span><\/span>another three <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>will be commissioned by <\/span><\/span><\/span>2030<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Recently, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Defence Research and Development Organisation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (DRDO) has successfully <\/span><\/span><\/span>flight-tested<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Man-Portable Anti-Tank Guided Missile<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (MPATGM) and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Akash missiles<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Asian Development Outlook (ADO) Report<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

  • The<\/span><\/span><\/span> Asian Development Bank<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has downgraded India’s economic growth forecast for the current financial year to 10 percent from 11 percent projected in April this year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Key Highlights<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    • India is expected to record a growth of 7.5% in the financial year 2022-23 based on almost universal vaccination coverage in India and the normalization of economic activities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Reasons for downgrade:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Then a second wave of the pandemic induced many state governments to impose strict containment measures.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • However, the adverse economic impact of these new waves is expected to be limited, with businesses and consumers better able to adapt to the pandemic and containment measures now than they were a year ago<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Inflation outlook: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>The ADB has raised its average inflation projection for 2021-22 to 5.5%, from 5.2% anticipated earlier. The increase in inflation projections is based on the <\/span><\/span><\/span>rapid and large increase in fuel and food prices.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • High levels of inflation do not augur well for economic recovery in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>post-pandemic scenario.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • Avian Influenza type A viruses are classified based on <\/span><\/span><\/span>two proteins on their surfaces<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u2013 Hemagglutinin(HA) and Neuraminidase(NA).\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • There are about 18 HA subtypes and 11 NA subtypes. Several combinations of these two proteins are possible e.g., H5N1, H7N2, H9N6, H17N10, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • H5N1 consists of <\/span><\/span><\/span>two types of proteins<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • H5 stands for the <\/span><\/span><\/span>fifth of several known types<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the protein hemagglutinin.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • N1 stands for the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first of several known types <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>of the protein neuraminidase.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • The virus can infect domestic poultry and there have been reports of H5N1 infection among pigs, cats, and even tigers in Thailand zoos.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Infection in humans:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • There have been reports of avian and swine influenza infections in humans including A(H1N1), A(H1N2), A(H5N1), A(H7N9), etc. The first report of human H5N1 infection was in 1997.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Transmission:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          • Direct contact \u2014 when a person comes in close contact with infected birds, either dead or alive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            Human-to-human transmission of the H5N1 virus was very rare.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
