Recently, the <\/span><\/span><\/span>National Aeronautics and Space Administration<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (NASA) has planned to fix a glitch in the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Hubble space telescope<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which is currently running in \u201csafe mode\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It was launched and deployed in <\/span><\/span><\/span>April 1990<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and is named after the <\/span><\/span><\/span>astronomer Edwin Hubble<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and is the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first major optical telescope <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to be <\/span><\/span><\/span>placed in space<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It has made <\/span><\/span><\/span>groundbreaking discoveries<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the field of astronomy since its launch.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It has a <\/span><\/span><\/span>7.9 feet mirror<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and captures<\/span><\/span><\/span> images of deep space<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> playing a major role in helping astronomers understand the universe by observing the most distant stars, galaxies and planets.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Recently, a<\/span><\/span><\/span> digital platform<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with the name <\/span><\/span><\/span>Kisan Sarathi<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has been launched on the occasion of <\/span><\/span><\/span>93<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>rd<\/sup><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Foundation Day<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Indian Council of Agricultural Research<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (ICAR).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It has been jointly launched by the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Recently, the<\/span><\/span><\/span> Union Minister of Civil Aviation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has virtually flagged off 8 new routes from Madhya Pradesh to Maharashtra and Gujarat to bolster regional air connectivity under <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (UDAN) <\/span><\/span><\/span>Scheme<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • It was launched as a<\/span><\/span><\/span> regional<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/span>connectivity scheme<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> under the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ministry of Civil Aviation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in 2016.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Recently, Odisha’s forest officials have announced measures to preserve the newly discovered <\/span><\/span><\/span>tiny gecko species of the genus Hemiphyllodactylus.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • This species was <\/span><\/span><\/span>first spotted in the Ganjam district of Odisha<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in 2014, it is also called Ganjam Slender Gecko.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> species of Hemiphyllodactylus minimus<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> which is the smallest member of the genus.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is the<\/span><\/span><\/span> first non-island species<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the genus which is distributed in lowland habitats, the second from the northeastern ghats and 41st globally.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Geckos<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    • Geckos are <\/span><\/span><\/span>reptiles<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and are found on all the <\/span><\/span><\/span>continents except Antarctica<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. These colourful lizards have adapted to <\/span><\/span><\/span>habitats from rain forests to deserts<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, to cold mountain slopes.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • Geckos are <\/span><\/span><\/span>usually nocturnal reptiles<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with soft skin. They also possess a short stout body, a large head, and typically well-developed limbs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Bent-toed geckos: <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>Recently, a new gecko species which belongs to the genus Cyrtodactylus was <\/span><\/span><\/span>discovered from Arunachal Pradesh<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

The Central government on Thursday extended the cut-off date for enrolment of farmers under <\/span><\/span><\/span>Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>from July 15 to July 23.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

About<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The Maharashtra government had requested to extend the deadline of the PM’s Crop Insurance scheme PMFBY till July 23.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • As per the Maharashtra government, 46 lakh farmers have applied for the scheme, but many of them are yet to complete enrolment formalities.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    About:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    • It was launched on 13th January 2016, in line with the<\/span><\/span><\/span> One Nation-One Scheme theme<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, covering over <\/span><\/span><\/span>5.5 crore farmer applications<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> year on year.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • This scheme replaced two schemes called <\/span><\/span><\/span>National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (NAIS)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Modified National Agricultural Insurance Scheme (MNAIS)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The Scheme shall be implemented on an <\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2018Area Approach basis\u2019 <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>i.e., Defined Areas<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • for each notified crop for widespread calamities.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Objectives:\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

      • To provide i<\/span><\/span><\/span>nsurance coverage and financial support <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to the farmers in the event of failure of any of the notified crops as a result of natural calamities, pests & diseases.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • To stabilise the income of farmers to ensure their continuance in farming.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • To encourage farmers to adopt innovative and modern agricultural practices.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • To ensure the flow of credit to the agriculture sector.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Implemented by:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

        • It shall be implemented through a multi-agency framework by selected insurance companies under the overall guidance & control of the Department of Agriculture and state government.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Key Provisions:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

          • There is <\/span><\/span><\/span>no upper limit on Government subsidies<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The premium rates to be paid by farmers are very low and the balance premium is paid by the Government to provide the full insured amount to the farmers.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
              \n
            • The prescribed <\/span><\/span><\/span>premium is 2% to be paid by farmers for all Kharif crops<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>1.5% for all rabi crops.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
            • In the case of annual commercial and horticultural crops, the premium is 5%.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

              • Premium cost over and above the farmer share is equally subsidised by the States and the Center.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
              • However, the Centre\u2019s share is 90% of the premium subsidy for the Northeastern States to promote the uptake in the region.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
              • Beneficiary:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> All farmers growing notified crops in a notified area during the season who have an insurable interest in the crop are eligible.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

                • The scheme is made voluntary for all farmers.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  Achievements<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

                  • Claims worth Rs. 90,000 crore have so far been disbursed to farmers since the launch of the scheme.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
                  • The Aadhaar seeding has helped in speedy claim settlement directly into the farmer accounts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
                  • Even during the Covid-19 lockdown period, nearly 70 lakh farmers benefitted and claims worth Rs. 8,741.30 crore were transferred.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Indian Navy accepted the first two of its <\/span><\/span><\/span>MH-60R Multi-Role Helicopters (MRH)<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> from the US Navy in a ceremony held at Naval Air Station North Island, San Diego.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • MH-60R helicopters<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> are all-weather helicopters designed to support multiple missions with state of the art avionics\/ sensors.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The helicopters would also be modified with several unique equipment and weapons.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Significance:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> The induction of the all-weather multi-role helicopters is an important <\/span><\/span><\/span>milestone in India-US bilateral defence ties<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

                • It gives India access to classified geospatial data as well as critical information having significant military applications from the US.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
