After touching a six-month high in May, <\/span><\/span><\/span>India\u2019s retail inflation remained unchanged<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in June at about 6.3 per cent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Inflation <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>refers to the <\/span><\/span><\/span>rise in the prices<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of most goods and services of daily or common use, such as food, clothing, housing, etc.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It <\/span><\/span><\/span>measures the average price change<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in a basket of commodities and services over time.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>opposite and rare fall<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the price index of this basket of items is called \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>deflation<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is indicative of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>decrease in the purchasing power<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of a unit of a country\u2019s currency.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • This is measured in <\/span><\/span><\/span>percentage<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • In India, inflation is primarily measured by two main indices, <\/span><\/span><\/span>Wholesale Price Index<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (WPI) and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Consumer Price Index<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (CPI), which measure wholesale and retail-level price changes, respectively.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • The goods or services sold by businesses to smaller businesses for selling further are captured by the WPI.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • The CPI calculates the difference in the price of commodities and services such as food, medical care, education, electronics etc, which Indian consumers buy for use.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

      • Growth impulses<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> remained <\/span><\/span><\/span>fragile<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> with the second Covid-19 wave hurting the recovery momentum.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • Persistently sticky retail prices for fuel and food translated into little respite for citizens, as inflation measured by the CPI declined by just four basis points from May\u2019s 6.30 per cent print.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • One basis point equals 0.01 per cent.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Beyond the monthly swings, <\/span><\/span><\/span>inflation continues to stay above the midpoint <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>(4 per cent) of the inflation target since late 2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • Economists expect the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Reserve Bank of India<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (RBI) to <\/span><\/span><\/span>revisit its inflation estimate<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of <\/span><\/span><\/span>5.1 per cent for 2021-22<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

          • They have stressed that lack of <\/span><\/span><\/span>fiscal policy<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> action to cool prices could precipitate a faster unwinding of RBI\u2019s growth-supporting approach to interest rates.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Planetary Conjunction<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Sky gazers are in for a celestial treat as <\/span><\/span><\/span>Mars, Venus and the Moon <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>are set to line up for a \u201c<\/span><\/span><\/span>planetary conjunction<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d that can be viewed with the naked eyes, after the sunset in the western sky.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • All three will appear as a <\/span><\/span><\/span>line of sight illusion<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> since the planets are millions of miles apart, but they will seem to be close together for a few nights.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Mars and Venus will appear to be<\/span><\/span><\/span> just 0.5\u00ba from each other from Earth<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • However, while the two planets on either side of Earth\u2019s orbit will appear to be closest on 13<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span> July, they will look almost as close in a few nights before and after with the added bonus of a<\/span><\/span><\/span> super slim crescent Moon in presence<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, making it a triple conjunction.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • The unique phenomenon called planetary conjunction, which takes place when <\/span><\/span><\/span>two planets appear to have come closer<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, while in reality they remain far away.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • According to experts, this would be the <\/span><\/span><\/span>first of three conjunctions of Venus and Mars<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • The next two are slated to happen on 12<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span> February 2022 and 12<\/span><\/span><\/span>th<\/sup><\/span><\/span><\/span> March 2022.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • A triple conjunction is an <\/span><\/span><\/span>astronomical event<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> where <\/span><\/span><\/span>two planets or a planet and a star meet each other three times<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in a short period, either in opposition or at the time of inferior conjunction, if an inferior planet is involved.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

India\u2019s first cryptogamic garden<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> housing nearly 50 species of lichens, ferns and fungi was<\/span><\/span><\/span> inaugurated in Uttarakhand\u2019s Dehradun<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> district.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • Around 50 species have been grown in the garden at a commanding height of 9,000 ft.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Cryptogams:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> Cryptogamae means<\/span><\/span><\/span> \u201chidden reproduction\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> referring to the fact that no seed, no flowers are produced. Thus, cryptogams represent the <\/span><\/span><\/span>non-seed bearing plants<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • Algae, bryophytes (moss, liverworts), lichens, ferns and fungi are the best-known groups of cryptogams that require moist conditions to survive.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Bryophytes:<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> They are the simplest and primitive land plants that occupy an intermediate position between algae and pteridophytes.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
