Recently, news reports have indicated <\/span><\/span><\/span>higher rates of respiratory infections<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> like influenza and the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Respiratory Syncytial Virus<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (RSV) and it has been called the <\/span><\/span><\/span>immunity debt<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
    \n
  • It has been brought on by <\/span><\/span><\/span>Non-Pharmaceutical Interventions<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (NPIs), like social distancing, use of masks and hand hygiene, put in place to <\/span><\/span><\/span>reduce the spread of the Covid-19<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • NPIs have been effective in breaking the chain of transmission of the virus.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • However, thay have had <\/span><\/span><\/span>unintended consequences <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>for <\/span><\/span><\/span>other directly transmitted<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, <\/span><\/span><\/span>endemic <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>diseases.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
      \n
    • Influenza virus circulation was almost non-existent during the 2020 winter, a 99.9 per cent reduction compared with previous years.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • Disruptions to the seasonal transmission patterns<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> of these diseases may have <\/span><\/span><\/span>consequences for the timing and severity of future outbreaks<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
        \n
      • For example, a constant exposure to infectious agents boosts the immune response in the human body.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
      • In the absence of that constant exposure, there is a possibility of unseasonal outbreaks being more severe than usual.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • RSV is commonly a <\/span><\/span><\/span>winter infection<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> but can be <\/span><\/span><\/span>severe in very young infants<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

        • Babies gain some protection from mothers, but the mother must have had some exposure to the virus.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • If mothers are not exposed, it leaves the baby unprotected and if it is not very severe, children can be supported through the infection.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • A <\/span><\/span><\/span>monoclonal antibody<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is used to <\/span><\/span><\/span>treat RSV<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
        • This is such an <\/span><\/span><\/span>unusual phenomenon<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that has occurred. However, it might not have long-term epidemiological effects as things will go<\/span><\/span><\/span> back to the regular seasonal impact in a while<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • There is a need for a <\/span><\/span><\/span>reassessment of the role of NPIs<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and an analysis to <\/span><\/span><\/span>identify the most effective components <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>to prevent respiratory virus transmission and infection.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • This might yield new and sustainable interventions that can <\/span><\/span><\/span>minimise and prevent seasonal and epidemic respiratory viral illnesses<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the future.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n

Jagannath Rath Yatra<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, the Prime Minister of India has greeted the people on the occasion of <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jagannath Rath Yatra<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The <\/span><\/span><\/span>nine-day festival<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> commemorates<\/span><\/span><\/span> Lord Jagannath’s annual visit to the Gundicha Temple<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> via Mausi Maa Temple along with his siblings, Lord Balbhadra and Goddess Subhadra.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is one of the biggest festivals in India and is among the most famous <\/span><\/span><\/span>Vaishnavite rituals<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in India and abroad.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • It is held at the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Jagannath Temple in Puri<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, Odisha (one of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Char Dhams<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, other 3 being Badrinath, Dwarka and Rameshwaram).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • For the festival, special chariots are built every year from a <\/span><\/span><\/span>particular type of Neem tree wood<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> that is later dismantled and goes to the temple kitchen to be used as firewood to cook prasad.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Lord Jagannath\u2019s Rath Nandighosha<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has dominant colours like red and yellow. <\/span><\/span><\/span>Balbhadra\u2019s chariot<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is called <\/span><\/span><\/span>Taladhwaja<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span><\/span>Subhadra\u2019s<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> chariot <\/span><\/span><\/span>Devadalan Rath<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> is coloured in red and black..<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • The main door of the Puri Jagannath Temple is kept<\/span><\/span><\/span> shut for one week prior to the festival<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • As the lord is believed to have caught a high fever after taking his annual bath. Once the period of rest is over, the Lord travels to his maternal aunt\u2019s house in the Rath Yatra.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • The king dresses like a sweeper and sweeps the road with a golden broom and water and fortifies it with sandalwood paste to mark the start of the yatra. The process is called the \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Chera Pahara<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019<\/em><\/span><\/span><\/span> ritual.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • It is believed that the Rath only moves after \u2018<\/span><\/span><\/span>Dahuka boli<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u2019\u00a0 (poetic recitations) is sung.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Lemru Elephant Reserve<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h3>\n<\/td>\n

Recently, the proposed <\/span><\/span><\/span>Lemru Elephant Reserve<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Chhattisgarh<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> has become the subject of a controversy around its area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

  • The proposal for the reserve, in <\/span><\/span><\/span>Korba<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> district, was passed <\/span><\/span><\/span>unanimously by the Assembly in 2005<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> and got <\/span><\/span><\/span>central approval in 2007<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
  • Lemru was planned to <\/span><\/span><\/span>prevent <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>human-animal conflict<\/u><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the region, with elephants moving into Chhattisgarh from Odisha and Jharkhand.<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

    • After Chhattisgarh was formed, the lack of a formal policy allowed elephants to use as a corridor a route in the north and central parts of the state.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
    • As elephants started straying into inhabited areas, looking for food, human-animal conflict started.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
    • It is part of an <\/span><\/span><\/span>elephant corridor <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>that connects <\/span><\/span><\/span>Lemru<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (Korba), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Badalkhol<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (Jashpur), <\/span><\/span><\/span>Tamorpingla<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> (Surguja).<\/span><\/span><\/span>\n

      • North Chhattisgarh alone is home to over 240 elephants, which are<\/span><\/span><\/span> relatively new to the state <\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>as they started moving into undivided Madhya Pradesh in 1990.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n
      • Controversy on Area<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>\n
          \n
        • Its initially proposed area was 450 sq km which was increased to 1,143 sq km in 2011 and later to 1,995 sq km in 2019.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • However, it has been decided to reduce the area to the original size as the area is part of the <\/span><\/span><\/span>Hasdeo Aranya forests<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>, a diverse biozone, rich in coal deposits.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n
        • The biggest challenge in increasing the reserve area was that <\/span><\/span><\/span>several coal mines would become unusable<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n

          • Total protected areas<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span> cover 11,310.977 sq km, which is 8.36 per cent of the state’s geographical area and 18.92 per cent of its total forest area.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
