earned from illegal activities is obviously not reported to the tax authorities, and hence is classified as black money.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Legal but Unreported Activity:<\/strong> The second category of source comprises of income from legal activities that is not reported to the tax authorities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color increase tax base by the chain of input tax credit to reduce tax evasion.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Benami_Transactions_Prohibition_Amendment_Act_2016\"><\/span><strong>Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Benami Transactions (Prohibition) Amendment Act, 2016 defines Benami transactions as Transactions which are carried out in the name of a third party (who owns property only on paper).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It contains provisions regarding provisional confiscation of property, special courts, appellate mechanisms, imprisonment upto 7 years.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 been a key force in making the efforts to establish a multilateral regime (known as Automatic Exchange of Information) for proactive sharing of financial information for combating tax evasion.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Automatic Exchange of Information based on Common Reporting Standard has started since 2017, which has enabled India to receive financial account information of Indian residents in other countries.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-49385b7071c4d6ef579df28fffbbe34f\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span action is needed to address it. Some suggested measures to strengthen efforts against the issue are as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Legislative Actions:<\/strong> Putting proper laws in place on issues such as bribing foreign officials, citizens grievance redressal, whistleblower protection, UID Aadhar, public procurement, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Improving Institutional Capacity of Agencies:<\/strong> Directorate of Criminal Investigation Cell for Exchange of Information, Income Tax Overseas Units- ITOUs at Singapore and Mauritius have been very useful.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On the similar lines, strengthening of the Foreign TAX, Tax Research and Investigation Division of the CBDT can be done.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reducing the Misuse of Money in Elections:<\/strong> Elections are a major avenue for the use of unaccounted money. Implementing reforms to reduce the influence of money in elections is crucial.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Skill and Manpower Training:<\/strong> Imprating domestic as well as international training related to the concerned area is important.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For example, the Financial Intelligence Unit-India actively enhances its employees&#8217; skills by offering regular training on anti-money laundering, counter-terrorist financing, and related economic matters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d0adc4bd9eb2e9b9b187dc32f0e06642\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion\"><\/span><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Black money is a critical issue that has its ill efects on the economic and social fabric of a nation.
