This <strong>article of NEXT IAS <\/strong>aims to study in detail the Indian Islands, including their categorization, major features, geomorphology, and significance.<\/em><\/p><div class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Indian Islands<\/strong> refer to the <strong>group of islands,<\/strong> scattered across the Indian Ocean, the Arabian Sea, and the Bay of Bengal, which form parts of the territory of India. Together, they constitute one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/blog\/physiographic-divisions-of-india\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.nextias.com\/blog\/physiographic-divisions-of-india\/\"><strong>6 physiographic divisions of India<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>They are, broadly, categorized into two main groups of islands:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Andaman and Nicobar Islands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Lakshadweep Islands<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"977\" height=\"657\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL.png\" alt=\"Indian Islands\" class=\"wp-image-6923\" style=\"width:774px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL.png 977w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL-384x258.png 384w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL-768x516.png 768w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL-696x468.png 696w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL-625x420.png 625w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/04\/FINAL-150x101.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 977px) 100vw, 977px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8bf256ff61f71421f4360ed2b2f2e766\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Andaman_and_Nicobar_Group_of_Islands\"><\/span><strong>The Andaman and Nicobar Group of Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: They are a group of islands of India, located in the <strong>Bay of Bengal.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extent<\/strong>: These islands form an <strong>arcuate chain (convex to the west)<\/strong> and extend from 6\u00b0 45&#8242; N to 13\u00b0 41&#8242; N and from 92\u00b0 12&#8242; E to 93\u00b0 57&#8242; E.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They stretch for a distance of about 590 km with a maximum width of about 58 km.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major Islands in the Group<\/strong>: This archipelago is composed of more than 500 big and small islands, which are divided into <strong>two distinct groups of islands<\/strong> &#8211; The Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-91c048d841247b6da5f78d756f679b1e\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Andaman_Islands\"><\/span><strong>The Andaman Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Area<\/strong>: The Andaman is a closely-knit group of islands in India with a length of around 260 km and a width of around 30 km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sub-groups<\/strong>: These islands are divided into <strong>three major sub-groups &#8211; North Andaman, Middle Andaman,<\/strong> and <strong>South Andaman.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The two major archipelagos of this group of islands &#8211; the <strong>Little Andaman<\/strong> and the <strong>Great Andaman<\/strong> &#8211; are <strong>separated <\/strong>from each other by the 50 km wide <strong>Duncan Passage.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The capital city<\/strong> of the Andaman &amp; Nicobar Islands <strong>Port Blair<\/strong> is located in <strong>South Andaman<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Habitation<\/strong>: Only around 24 islands are inhabited in this group of islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1af25e6206ba94947af75e7b68284276\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Nicobar_Islands\"><\/span><strong>The Nicobar Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Area<\/strong>: This group of islands in India are scattered over a length of 262 km with a maximum width of 58 km covering an area of 1,653 sq km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sub-groups<\/strong>: These islands are divided into <strong>three major sub-groups &#8211; <\/strong>Northern Group, Central Group, and Southern Group. The prominent islands in each subgroup are:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Northern Group<\/strong>: Car Nicobar and Battimalv.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Central Group<\/strong>: Chowra, Chaura or Sanenyo, Teressa or Luroo, Bompuka or Poahat, Katchal, Camorta, Nancowry or Nancowrie, Trinket, Laouk or &#8220;Isle of Man&#8221;, Tillangchong, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Southern Group<\/strong>: Great Nicobar (the largest island of the Nicobars), Little Nicobar, Kondul Island, Pulo Milo or Pillomilo (Milo Island), Meroe, Trak, Treis, Menchal, Kabra, Pigeon and Megapod.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Great Nicobar<\/strong> is the <strong>largest and<\/strong> the <strong>southernmost island <\/strong>in the group, which is only 147 km away from Sumatra island of Indonesia.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>India&#8217;s southernmost point &#8216;Indira Point\u2019<\/strong> is located at the <strong>southern tip of the Great Nicobar.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Habitation<\/strong>: Only around 12 islands are inhabited in this group of islands.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The<strong> indigenous ethnic groups<\/strong> are the <strong>Nicobarese <\/strong>and the <strong>Shompen<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Other Features:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The waterbody named <strong>&#8216;Ten Degree Channel&#8217;<\/strong> separates the <strong>Andaman Islands in the north<\/strong> from the <strong>Nicobar Islands in the south.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Most <\/strong>of these islands have a <strong>volcanic base<\/strong> and are made of tertiary sandstone, limestone, and shale.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Barren <\/strong>and <strong>Narcondam <\/strong>islands, north of Port Blair, are <strong>volcanic islands<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of the islands are fringed with coral reefs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most of the islands are mountainous and reach considerable heights.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Saddle Peak<\/strong> (737 m) in <strong>North Andaman is the highest peak<\/strong> in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>names <\/strong>of the following three islands were <strong>changed <\/strong>in 2018:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Ross Island<\/strong> &#8211; renamed as <strong>Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neil Island<\/strong> &#8211; renamed as <strong>Shaheed Dweep<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Havelock Island<\/strong> &#8211; renamed as <strong>Swaraj Dweep<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a299e2569678ca3ffbea6379bf7d0064\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Lakshadweep_Islands\"><\/span><strong>The Lakshadweep Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"584\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2-2.png\" alt=\"The Lakshadweep Islands\" class=\"wp-image-6340\" style=\"width:504px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2-2.png 584w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2-2-234x258.png 234w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2-2-381x420.png 381w, https:\/\/wp-images.nextias.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto\/blog\/uploads\/2024\/03\/2-2-150x165.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Location<\/strong>: They are a group of islands of India, located in the <strong>Arabian Sea<\/strong>, close to the Malabar coast of Kerala.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Extent<\/strong>: This group of islands in India are widely scattered over an area of 108.78 sq. km. extending from 8\u00b0 N to 12\u00b020&#8242; N and 71\u00b045&#8242; E to 74 \u00b0E.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Major Islands in the group<\/strong>: Though the term Lakshadweep literally means one lakh islands, the Lakshadweep Islands, actually, consist of a group of only 25 small islands. These islands are divided into <strong>three groups <\/strong>as follows:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Andrott_Islands\"><\/span><strong>Andrott Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Andrott <\/strong>Island is the <strong>largest island<\/strong> of lakshadweep with an area of 4.90 sq km, length of 4.66 km and a maximum width of 1.43 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9db50a951baeb15b71ea521a7c72f1b7\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Amindivi_Islands\"><\/span><strong>Amindivi Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The islands <strong>north of 11\u00b0 N<\/strong> are known as Amindivi Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d44bcae3ddbc777d05b3dcf8c6ee3172\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cannanore_Islands\"><\/span><strong>Cannanore Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The islands <strong>south of 11\u00b0<\/strong> <strong>N<\/strong> are called Cannanore Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0e8e4c70ad56fc1427303719cc79ae00\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Minicoy_Islands\"><\/span><strong>Minicoy Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is located in the <strong>extreme south<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is the <strong>largest <\/strong>and the <strong>most advanced<\/strong> island in the group of Lakshadweep Islands.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Composition: All the islands<\/strong> in this group are of coral origin and are surrounded by fringing reefs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Topography<\/strong>: Their topography is <strong>flat <\/strong>and there is almost <strong>complete absence of any major relief features<\/strong> such as hills, streams, valleys, etc.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Shallow lagoons are seen on their western side, while on the eastern seaboard, the slopes are steeper.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Capital<\/strong>: The capital city of the Lakshadweep Islands is <strong>Kavaratti<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bitra_Island\"><\/span><strong>Bitra Island&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Bitra Island<\/strong> is the smallest island in the Indian ocean\u200b<strong> <\/strong>in the territory having a land area of 0.105 sq km.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It has a length of 0.57 km and a width of 0.28 km at the broadest point. This is at a distance of 483 km (261 nautical miles) from Kochi.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The island is located at 11\u00b0 36\u2032 N I and 72\u00b0 11\u2032 E longitude.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Though the land area is small, its lagoon area is 45.61 sq km.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Importance_of_Islands\"><\/span><strong>Importance of Islands<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Islands are very important natural entities.
