His father was a teacher who passed away when he was just one and a half years old. His mother, who was still in her twenties, moved to her father\u2019s house with her three kids and settled down there.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was known as <strong>Nanhe, or \u2018little one\u2019<\/strong> at home. His education in his small town was not remarkable in any manner due to the poverty that dogged him, despite of it he had a happy childhood. For attending high school, he left to Varanasi.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Later, he joined the <strong>Kashi Vidya Peeth in Varanasi<\/strong>, one of the institutions set up in defiance of the British rule. There, he came under the influence of the nationalists and the greatest intellectuals of the country. Like Gandhi, he held truth higher than non-violence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shastri was a true champion of peace and democracy. Thus, he envisioned India to be a harbinger of peace in the world. He was, however, never ready to accept anything at the cost of his country\u2019s sovereignty and always held that it was our first and the foremost duty to protect the countries interest. Whatever be the cost.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Therefore, Shastri enrolled himself as a life member of the Servants of the People <strong>Society (Lok Sevak Mandal)<\/strong>, founded by <strong>Lala Lajpat Rai<\/strong> and he began to work for the betterment of the Harijans under Gandhi\u2019s direction at Muzaffarpur. He also has a great faith in the <strong>philosophy of Samanvaya Vada<\/strong>, a philosophical way of life that takes the middle course in the midst of the conflicting points of view. When the Government was formed in <strong>1946, this \u2018little dynamo of a man\u2019<\/strong> was called upon to play a constructive role in the governance of the country.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>He was appointed <strong>Parliamentary Secretary in Uttar Pradesh<\/strong> and later rose to the position of Home Minister. His capacity for hard work and efficiency was praised by the people of Uttar Pradesh.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 1951, he moved to New Delhi and held several portfolios in the Union Cabinet like Minister for Transport and Communications, Minister for Railways, Minister for Commerce and Industry, Home Minister.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-background has-fixed-layout\" style=\"background-color:#ebecf0\"><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>\u201cInspiring Incident of Shastri\u2019s Life\u201d<br><\/strong><br>Shastri sets an <strong>example of probity and integrity in public life<\/strong> when a train accident happens during his tenure as a Prime Minister. Following <strong>a train accident at Ariyalur in Tamil Nadu<\/strong>, in which more than 140 people were killed, <strong>he resigned as railway minister taking moral responsibility for the incident because he felt responsible for a railway accident<\/strong>. The unprecedented gesture was greatly appreciated by Parliament and the country.<br><br>The then Prime Minister, Pt. Nehru, speaking in Parliament on the incident, praised Lal Bahadur Shastri\u2019s integrity and high ideals. He said he was accepting the <strong>resignation because<\/strong> it would set an <strong>example in constitutional propriety<\/strong> and not because he was in any way responsible for what had happened.<br><br>Replying to the long debate on the Railway accident, <strong>Lal Bahadur Shastri <\/strong>said; <strong>\u201cPerhaps due to my being small in size and soft of tongue, people are apt to believe that I am not able to be very firm.
