The \u2018<strong>Governor\u2019 of Bengal <\/strong>was <strong>renamed <\/strong>as the \u2018<strong>Governor General\u2019 of Bengal<\/strong> and Madras and Bombay presidencies were made <strong>subordinate <\/strong>to Bengal. This became the <strong>First step towards centralization<\/strong> of power in British India. <strong>Before 1773<\/strong>, the presidencies were <strong>independent <\/strong>of each other. The <strong>Supreme Court <\/strong>With one <strong>Chief Justice Elijah Impey<\/strong> and 3 other judges was established at <strong>Fort William Calcutta<\/strong> in <strong>1774<\/strong>. The act also<strong> prohibited private trade by company servants <\/strong>and compelled them <strong>not to accept gifts or bribes <\/strong>from local people.
