Africa<\/strong> and establishing them in suitable habitats within India, particularly in <strong>national parks and wildlife reserves.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The goal of <strong>Project Cheetah <\/strong>is to<strong> restore the ecological balance, promote biodiversity, and enhance wildlife tourism<\/strong> and conservation efforts in India.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Although attempts to relocate Cheetahs to India began in 2009, <strong>the Supreme Court of India<\/strong> finally gave the <strong>green signal <\/strong>for such efforts in 2020.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For this <strong>Project Cheetah,<\/strong> India has partnered with the <strong>Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF),<\/strong> an international organisation founded in <strong>Namibia in 1990<\/strong> dedicated to saving the cheetah in the wild.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kuno National Park,<\/strong> located in the <strong>Sheopur district of Madhya Pradesh, <\/strong>has a topography and climatic conditions similar to those in South Africa and Namibia, such as rainfall levels, temperatures, and altitude.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The government is trying to smooth the cheetahs&#8217; settling in through the <strong>\u201ccheetah mitras\u201d or \u201ccheetah friends\u201d.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Forest officials have trained around <strong>400 cheetah mitras from 51 villages, <\/strong>including school teachers, village headmen, and patwaris, to help the local population understand the cheetah and its characteristics and minimise potential conflicts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-226a9831d2c12d12856233d326b1c442\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cheetah_Reintroduction\"><\/span><strong>Cheetah Reintroduction<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>\u2018Reintroduction\u2019 of a species<\/strong> means releasing it in an area where it can survive.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reintroducing <strong>large carnivores<\/strong> has become a widely recognised strategy for conserving threatened species and restoring ecosystem functions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cheetahs are thought to have vanished from India after <strong>Maharaja Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo of Koriya<\/strong> hunted and killed the last <strong>three Asiatic cheetahs<\/strong> recorded in<strong> 1947.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It was <strong>declared extinct by the Government in 1952.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under Project Cheetah, the Prime Minister of India released wild Cheetahs in <strong>Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh.<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Cheetahs introduced in the Kuno National Park were brought from <strong>Namibia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This is the <strong>world\u2019s first inter-continental wild carnivore<\/strong> translocation project.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Five of the eight Cheetahs are female, and three are male. Under the project, India will receive 20 cheetahs, 12 from South Africa and 8 from Namibia.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-ef3fb6ed664d16a473b8616c9f84d46f\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_Effort_Related_to_Relocation_of_Cheetahs\"><\/span><strong>India\u2019s Effort Related to Relocation of Cheetahs<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This isn\u2019t the first time that <strong>India has attempted relocation of the cheetah.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the early 1970s, negotiations were carried out with Iran on behalf of the Indira Gandhi administration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of the assessed sites are:-\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mukundara Hills Tiger Reserve,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shergarh Wildlife Sanctuary in Rajasthan,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Kuno National Park,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Madhav National Park and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finally, the <strong>Kuno National Park <\/strong>has been identified for relocation.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The site has been monitored since 2006 and has been identified as needing relocating the Cheetah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e139886a506bd53ce383794d047999a3\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Causes_of_Extinction_of_Cheetah\"><\/span><strong>Causes of Extinction of Cheetah<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Human-wildlife conflict, loss of habitat, loss of prey, and illegal trafficking.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Emphasis on agriculture eventually led to less forest land, and climate change are major contributor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8b7a4e1ce49f687cddd3c27f1534e94e\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Significance_of_Cheetah_Reintroduction\"><\/span><strong>Significance of Cheetah Reintroduction<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Some conservationists have long supported the<strong> reintroduction of cheetahs <\/strong>into India.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>This approach is acknowledged as an effective strategy for <strong>conserving endangered species and restoring ecosystem functions.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Historically, the cheetah is the only large carnivore to have been extirpated in India, primarily due to over-hunting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India can now economically consider restoring its lost natural heritage for <strong>ethical and ecological reasons.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The conservation of the cheetah will <strong>revive grasslands and their biomes and habitats, <\/strong>much like<strong> Project Tiger<\/strong> has done for forests and all the species whose numbers have increased.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-40f53db2e58c05192fb0d9eb5791fb60\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Impact_of_Project_Cheetah_on_Wildlife_Conservation\"><\/span><strong>Impact of Project Cheetah on Wildlife Conservation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Project Cheetah has several significant impacts on wildlife conservation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Species Restoration<\/strong> &#8211; By reintroducing cheetahs, Project Cheetah aims to restore a species that had become extinct in India, contributing to biodiversity and ecosystem balance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ecological Balance<\/strong> &#8211; Cheetahs play a crucial role as apex predators.
