array of technologies and techniques for manipulating the global climate to alleviate or block some of the effects of climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It is usually done by removing CO2 from the air or limiting the amount of sunlight reaching the planet\u2019s surface.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1a20a3fbcf26bcb1e681c32cd48adbc7\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Working_in_Geo-engineering_or_Climate_Engineering\"><\/span><strong>Working in Geo-engineering or Climate Engineering<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Geo-engineering is based on two aspects:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Removal of the Greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide, from the atmosphere and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Managing solar radiations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both these aspects of Geo-engineering (Climate Engineering) have been discussed in detail in the sections that follow:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0972f7fa9e6a69f44a11158640f41159\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Greenhouse_Gas_Removal\"><\/span><strong>Greenhouse Gas Removal<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The greenhouse gas removal approach seeks to remove carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of the techniques used for the class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Bio-energy with carbon capture and storage to sequester carbon and simultaneously provide energy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon air capture removes carbon dioxide from the air.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Afforestation, reforestation and forest restoration to absorb carbon dioxide.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ocean fertilization is based on the purposeful introduction of nutrients to the upper ocean to increase marine food production, create a natural carbon sink, and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-bdbd904c66064e105ad7f1b37aef9308\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Solar_Radiation_Management\"><\/span><strong>Solar Radiation Management<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Solar radiation management approaches are designed to reduce the absorption of sunlight and reflect sunlight away from Earth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some of the Solar radiation management methods are described as follows:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Surface-based<\/strong>: Using pale-coloured roofing materials, attempting to change the brightness of the ocean, or growing high-albedo crops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Troposphere-based<\/strong>: Marine cloud brightening would spray fine seawater to whiten clouds and thus increase cloud reflectivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper Atmosphere-based<\/strong>: Creating reflective aerosols, such as stratospheric sulfate aerosols, specifically designed self-levitating aerosols or other substances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Space-based<\/strong>: Space sunshades are put up to obstruct solar radiation with space-based mirrors, dust, etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8e09663478ef3cc0660c30eb2febe5ce\" style=\"color:#015aa7\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Various_Geoengineering_Techniques\"><\/span><strong>Various Geoengineering Techniques<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the prominent Geo-engineering techniques can be seen as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-463ef597f9f8f36664b0a6c03a6950c8\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bio-energy_with_Carbon_Capture_and_Storage_BECCS\"><\/span><strong>Bio-energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It is the process of extracting bio-energy from biomass and capturing and storing the carbon, thereby removing it from the atmosphere.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The carbon in biomass comes from the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2), which is extracted from the atmosphere by biomass when it grows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy is extracted in useful forms (electricity, heat, biofuels, etc.) as the biomass is utilised through combustion, fermentation, pyrolysis or other conversion methods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4fbf49ae848f2508409b4d3fd8fdbd55\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Ocean_Fertilization_or_Ocean_Nourishment\"><\/span><strong>Ocean Fertilization or Ocean Nourishment<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ocean fertilisation is a type of climate engineering based on intentionally introducing nutrients to the upper ocean to increase marine food production and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some techniques, including fertilisation by iron, urea and phosphorus, have been proposed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-72ce3c435fb783c7d95db435c3e3078e\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Soil_Carbon_Sequestration_SCS\"><\/span><strong>Soil Carbon Sequestration (SCS)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Soils can serve as sinks for carbon dioxide since atmospheric concentrations have crossed 410 parts per million and oceans are already turning acidic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Carbon sequestration in soils has the potential to offset GHG emissions from fossil fuels by up to 15% annually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil organic carbon (SOC) comes from plants, animals, microbes, leaves, and wood, and it is mostly found in the first metre or so.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many conditions and processes determine changes to SOC content, including temperature, rainfall, vegetation, soil management, and land-use change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-8c644351f840296df79dadc162353db7\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Stratospheric_Aerosol_Injection_SAI\"><\/span><strong>Stratospheric Aerosol Injection (SAI)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>SAI is the main type of solar radiation management (SRM) .<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the case of SAI, gases are pumped into the stratosphere to reflect some of the sun\u2019s heat, mimicking an effect that happens naturally in a strong volcanic eruption.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generally, the compounds used are sulphur dioxide or finely powdered calcium carbonate as aerosols.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The scale of SAI makes its governance difficult \u2014 implementing it in one country can trigger rain and extreme weather across borders.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lack of public support might be the biggest hurdle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-551c2f77e0acd74ed532ba153608cf18\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Marine_Cloud_Brightening_MCB\"><\/span><strong>Marine Cloud Brightening (MCB)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>MCB involves reflecting sunlight away from the earth in some way.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this case, sea salt or other particles are sprayed into marine clouds to make them thicker and more reflective.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3d7e90804e2820590539aeb9a59fbcb1\" style=\"color:#ff6a00\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Cirrus_Cloud_Thinning_CCT\"><\/span><strong>Cirrus Cloud Thinning (CCT)<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>CCT is almost the opposite of marine cloud brightening.
